What's going on today? Fantastic Gymnastic Bronze for our lads last yesterday.
as the guy was threatening to kill people and rape people on his feed when i read it. not cool.
I haven't seen that mentioned on any news items
just the stuff about letting his dad down
about it, and his response was offensive tweeting to those who'd tweeted him, and then apologising, profusely, pleading with Tom Daley to accept his apology (he claimed he didn't know his dad was dead) and then after the news picked up up then tweeted to say he'd be suing Sky News for harrasment or something.
It was rather amusing, I guess. But the rest of his profile is full of that kind of abuse to others.
harsh trolling and the kid is a total prick but if that's an arrestable offence then half of DiS would be posting from Belmarsh
and an @ Reply on Twitter, I feel. I at least get that impression, BUT I have no idea the legal things.
I guess some threats on here most def could be seen as harrasment. Porbably should refer to the Internet Police.
Doing it on here is the equivalent of telling all your friends and family and the person's family and friends, and others, that you intend to kill them, but an @reply is more like sending them a text message saying it.
Or something. As I say, it's only a feeling.
(or I killer you)
it was more than being 'mean', and his timeline shows he is clearly one odious little shit.
But I don't know if sending abuse on Twitter should be a criminal offence - not sure how seriously any death threats can be treated. And again it's only the celebrity aspect that has meant police involvement.
Maybe just ban him from Twitter for breach of code of conduct or something?
it's ridiculous to arrest some kid for being a rude fucker to THE NATIONS FAVUORITE SON.
Since they've done it now, hopefully they'll just put the frighteners up him and let him go. He shouldn't have been arrested in the first place.
He's a cunt but so are thousands of other people on the internet. Nobody has been arrested for saying they're going to rape any of the female political commentators who get loads of abuse every time they write something.
How many of the people who started pouring out racism against the Japanese last night will be brought in?
the police are in a very tricky position - they receive a complaint, they have to investigate it, which means they have to make an arrest to question a suspect. They may (should) release him without charge but it may have been enough of an experience to make the kid think about what he's posting in future. And may also send a message that this stuff is taken seriously.
Or he could just enjoy a sense of newly found notoriety and have his own TV show before we know it.
If this is just literally over Twitter busybodies reporting the the Tom Daley stuff then its an over-reacton. But if any of the posters who were threatened were genuinely frightened and complained to the police about it (not an unreasonable reaction when threatened by a stranger, be it on the internet or elsewhere) then it's perfectly legitimate (and what the police have to do) to question him and establish whether there's any genuine chance of violence.
99% of cases there won't be but if this did prove to be one of the rare cases when some internet nutjob tracked a stranger down on the internet then the Police'd look pretty bad for doing nothing. And there are some pretty direct threats on there.
I mean the threats are pretty nasty and if you're someone on Twitter and someone tells you they're going to stick a knife down your throat or come to your house and strangle you with a rope that's pretty unpleasant but, in the context and on the basis the guy doesn't know where they live, I'm not sure it's an arrestable offence - can it be a serious threat if you don't know where someone lives?
very easy to find that stuff out.
Thing is all this stuff is 'arrestable' - police need to arrest people to investigate genuine complaints. Whether it's a 'chargeable' offence is the important question.
Or do you think they are tightly controlled by Government officials (from their home country) about where they can go and what the can see?
mind you, I think there'd be plenty of GB sports people whose minds would be blown going the other way - though perhaps not entirely for the same reasons
North Korean athletes will be tightly monitored, though, and they will have been thoroughly screened before being allowed out. And they'll have undergone a rigorous education in what to expect from the capitalist dogs, and how to fight it. You're not going to be in contention for an Olympic team in the first place if you're not already in the elite, too, and they probably have family who have brought them back DVDs and iPads from business trips to the west. It's just the regular people who are totally cut off from the outside really.
how do they differentiate between the for-real heroes like that weightlifting chap and the fake winners?
Kim Jong-Il liked to make up ridiculous sporting claims for himself (like the whole "shot 11 holes in one on his first game of golf") but can't remember anything being straight up invented for ordinary athletes. They might downplay the failures and successes of the other teams though? They were really proud of the NK team's performance in the 1966 World Cup when I was there, but can't think of anything else that was mentioned...
Brazilian men's team for something or other in Boots buying cosmetics for their girlfriends.
If someone tests positive for drugs (and they are all tested) then fair enough, let's have lots of news stories and everyone can get their knickers in a twist, but until then, just shut up.
he managed to land on his feet. Bastard.
I don't like what the Olympics is doing to me.
but the website is SO SHIT I can't really find any tickets in the lower price brackets, apart from womens football. Urgh.
Currently weighing up if I really want to spend £95 watching Greco-Roman wrestling
Just about to get canoe sprint tickets - they're showing on the website but then when they're in your basket and you have to 'request tickets' it says they're not available.
Seriously most infuriating website ever.
I was struggling with that for ages but then realised that was the problem. If you're happy to go on your own and/or sit separately from person you're going with (who might need to buy separate ticket as they won't let you buy for same event more than once - yes that bit of website's stupid) you'll find tickets are available.
WHY IS IT BEING A BASTARD TO ME?
very good performance.
Other than that they've obviously got a fair point but I'm not quite sure what the point is of doing it now rather than when all this stuff was announced months/years ago.
it would probably be a reasonable reply if it was a large protest taking place at/in one of the venues which may take a bit of the shine off the competitors' big day, but it isn't
It's just that locals keep being ignored (or, even worse, dismissed as being "grumpy").
I love the Olympics, but the political stuff around it is often disgusting.
I agree the political stuff around it is appalling and these are all things that people should be protesting about.
At the same time I've now reached the point where I'm personally thinking 'fuck it, these things are happening whether I like it or not so I'm going to go to a few events and enjoy the experience'. Which admittedly possibly makes me a hypocritical twat with no commitment to his principles but nonetheless one who's enjoying himself whilst doing it.
no-one cares either way
that was ridiculous
they should have changed their route or cancelled it.
Where's Verbal with my schedule?
I'll give it a go as it's GB.
Completely unaware it wasn't until today.
Go random South Korean woman at 4/1!
shame the commentary goes over the top of it.
presumably to take into account the strength needed to make the 90m distance, they probably could compete at certain distances though but you'd probably have to make some changes to the format
But archery uses upper body strength...so yes.
also, do you reckon they need to do that thing where they drop the bow after the shot, or do they just do it to look cool?
Not easy my friend.
Just to look cool. And how cool they look.
night until around 1am as the match finished at 12:45am. I'm at the archery at the moment and have another evening volleyball session later tonight. Jealous?
she was absolutely bloody lovely when they interviewed her after.
I was really emotional for Ruta, too. What a lovely chap.
both ridiculously good at hockey and insanely hot
thanks very much
hi i'm ed nice to meet you teach me hockey
Andrew Willis, his name. Go him.
I'll cheer for him in the office. (I won't, everyone's being moody)
Go Willis! Good stuff.
excellent stuff from Andrew. Hopefully they can continue their form into the final.
Don't forget, if you aren't able to get a ticket to anything there's these events you can roll up to for free:
Race Walk 4&11 Aug
Triathlon 4&7 Aug
Marathon 5&12 Aug
Swimming Marathon 9-10 Aug
but this is going too far
Q - Do you fancy watching some hockey and volleyball on tv for 2 hours?
A - Piss off and get the hell away from me.
During the Olympics:
Q - Do you fancy watching some hockey and volleyball on tv for 2 hours?
A - Sure, let me just watch the end of this floor routine first. Can we squeeze in some archery after?
Basketball is all right. Couldn't be doing with all these time outs in beautiful British sports though.
Also how does Argentinian teams manage to have the same personality - aggressive wind up merchants - in EVERY sport?
Massive superiority complex.
French people all say it.
Mrs Hatfood has changed her working hours so she can get home earlier and watch it.
Robert Forstermann's thighs (on the right)? :
that can't be real
is that swelling? or his actual muscle?
how does he walk through doors?
Also can anyone tell me who's good to watch in the badminton? Only sport I'm interested in that i haven't seen so far, dunno where to start
Peter Hoge Gade as well.
Lin Dan though. He's basically the Federer of badminton and is the best player ever to have lived.
good riding you posh buggers.
Pippa's very upset
I don't think I want to watch the rest of the horsey stuff.
we might win it tho.
GB handball 1:30p
maybe the chinese have created something we cannot yet detect?
if someone is doping away from the games to give them more powerful lungs and muscles and that, how long before the games/testing would they need to stop for the physical benefits to remain but the chemical smoking gun to be removed from their body?
and would a blood transfusion thingy lessen the presence of said thingys?
guardian i think
chinese olympian superwarrior programme
even outside of games (I believe), so don't think that's really an option.
Remember hearing something about how intrusive the WADA testing can be, having to guarantee where you will be at certain times of day in case they want to conduct random testing.
you get in hotel lobbies.
does anyone care about the equestrian stuff? no, didn't think so
it's exactly the sort of sport the Olympics is all about getting into (i.e. one's I don't really give a shit about usually)
not flouncing about on hosses
I was going to give it a go but it's finished.
they should probably get goal line technology
Hurray! Silver in the HorseyJump Poshything! But can our Correct Use Of Cutlery team match their achievement in the Downton Arena later?
Asking Gold medal winners what they think of the Brits' performance, starting every interview with a GB Athlete with some remark like 'Your Mum who died 2 years ago would be so proud of you'.
Also would like to lodge some discontent with athletes fucking high fiving after EVERY point in tennis, Volleyball, etc. EVEN WHEN THEY FUCK IT UP AND YOUR TEAM MATES HATE THEM.
Otherwise, yay! Carry on Olympics.
I don't really care.
Whilst the commentators bleated endlessly about the GB competitor in 5th
Poor bloke :(
Or the handball.
deformed mutoid child?
Whenever there is a horse event on they drop everything and go to it.
Chance to see the Royals getting into the Olympic Spirit just like us normal folk. They love that shit.
Just to be a bellend?
and spins and falls etc.
But yeah, in that case it was just to be difficult
And is it best of 3?
only ever played best of 1 in our games. But it's first to 21 and you have to be 2 points clear, in case you didn't know
My Mum must have been quie strict with rules seeing as I haven't played it since I was about 7.
but why does it look so slow on TV?
same with tennis. when the cameras are on the ground at the side it looks much faster
but I guess that's probably cos it is actually faster in reality
It was coached by a guy who represented England but was about 30th in line to get to this sort of level. In 2 years of playing him regularly, I took about 3 points off him.
Fucking insane how good you CAN be at this sport if you remember to return to the centre after every shot and are very disciplined.
Very guardian of them to put these up in this fashion (I say that as a Guardian reader).
In a lot of them it looks distinctly like there's no action taking place at the time, or it's pissing with rain etc. Haterz
and i saw a quote from someone saying the spare seats would go to the armed forces. why? is it just the old 'the defend our country thing' or something else?
No problem with it myself.
it's the soldiers who are doing the security, they just got asked to sit in the stadia when they're not working so they don't look empty.
as opposed to just being sent in to fill them up.
I'm sure they wouldn't be making room for them if all the sponsors/corporate allowance were being used.
as IF its a problem with the corporate ones...
we were sat with a load of them for the South Korean handball game, lovely chaps and very enthusiastic
Coe - Right we need to a group of people in, any ideas?
Coe minion - What about some butchers?
Coe - Brilliant, get the car out front and tell the driver we're off to Smithfields pronto.
personally I'd be pretty pissed off if I'd spent a few hundred quid for my ticket last summer because I really wanted to get one and the guy next to me got his at the last minute for £20
ever caught a flight before? no one on that flight paid what you paid.
*cheap tickets to something that doesn't involve Clare Balding
What they should do is upgrade everyone who already has tickets into the better seats and then flog off the cheap ones left. Anyone got Coe's number?
logistically I imagine it would be a complete and utter disaster at such short notice
having a load of empty seats at every event.
not ideal of course, but hardly ruining the Olympics
but it's still a massive, massive cock-up and quite rightly is making a lot of people angry.
they've done exactly the same as has been done at all Olympics (and most major sporting events) and people haven't used their seats which is pretty hard to predict and work around.
I'm not saying it's a good situation, but it's certainly not unusual and I'm not sure it's entirely down to bad planning.
team GB getting turned over by Sweden today. the swedish guy that just scored plays for 'athletico madrid' :D
The main anchor woman was guffawing about the British crowd not even understanding the rules <<when they had a player sent off in their first match the crowd went absolutely crazy. They were furious. They had absolutely no idea that he'd be back in play in 2 minute. It was hilarious>> *all the TV pundits fall off their chairs laughing*
p.s See you in the Copper Box on Friday *squeal*
about some Swedes getting really upset cos they couldn't get get a 2nd hand lease agreement and couldn't understand why.
(safety wink - I'll be PMing you later/tomorrow when I've relayed all that info to the gf and we've had a chat, thanks again!)
There's an El Clasico in Basketball, and a load of current NBA players used to play for Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia etc.
let's make that an Olympic sport
these olympics, have, been a bit disappointing?
two of our girls about to have a shout at an individual medal.
mind stone henge girls.
Followed by gymnastics.
Hopefully won't be doing any work either.
Who's excited? I'm excited.
Not because of any realistic medal prospects. (Hopefully GB will get an individual medal or two later in the week, but I don't think there's much chance for the team.)
where are all the hot 25 year old eastern European babes?
I could leave at 5, but then I won't be home til 5.45, and I don't want to miss 45 mins in the middle.
I might try to get out early so I only miss the start and can see the rest on tv.
and spent the 9 billion on an underground child athlete enslavement programme for the past 8 years. Questionable ethics or a deeply embarrassing medal haul? I know which I'd prefer
Which would have been immense.
THEY SHOULD ALL BE LIKE THAT. i hate the 'i'm just happy to be here' thing. no one wins anything like that.
dead rough. hope they shinsmash their way to gold.
I wonder how her scores will be on the other pieces of apparatus. She'll probably have some bruises coming through. Still, they're tough girls.
at least she fell off in the first event and kiboshed the whole thing from the word go, better than being in a medal position with one thing to go then dropping a bollock.
2-2 in the first. Sharapova's serve is dodgy. A bit more of a breeze and she'll be all over the place.
The roof's on, isn't it?
less wind means she's less reliant on her awful footwork. and it amplifies the crowd and that
COME ON LAURA
was getting a bit concerned ...
though the england band seem to be there. sods.
they were there for the mens too.
weirdly quiet in the flesh though
£450 for one of the finals.
We tried to buy some tickets today. It wouldn't go through.
Nothing I select even expensive +£100 tickets are going through
That's when they're putting them back up it seems
could go on a while...
That would be super special.
something very cool about watching someone casually do a double back flip off the vault without much effort.
all the hand twirling they do between the cool bits.
after finishing second or third should be banned permanently from all sport.
you're on the Jamaican bobsled team? A podium finish would be pretty great.
firstly, it's not a real sport. it's just girls in bikinis playing a slowly, grittier version of an actual sport
secondly, they played plastic people by four tet!
Maybe they upped their bid to something slightly more respectable.
it looks great
Been tweeting him about this for a few days now but I honestly don't know why people are surprised. I understand why people are GUTTED they can't be there, but most private sector company employees will likely know someone who occasionally bags a free ticket to an unwanted seat at a high profile sporting event or gig I'd wager.
you can understand it twickenham or wembley or lords where they're usually tucked away in a box, out of view, and they all get a chance to do some networking and have a nice lunch.
Here they all seem to have some of the best seats for once of a lifetime events, where the sporting action is pretty much the only attraction.
dunno how it works with the multinationals but if these tickets been dished out to a load of coca cola workers in L.A or Tokyo who never even intend to attend it's just WRONG
also really annoying how rigid they were with the number of category A seats for the less in demand events in the first place.
You don't show up, you're SOL, and the ticket goes to someone who wants to be there.
after two minutes. MY WORD.
USA winning the battle of freedom vs evil at Old Trafford
France maintaining Le Toons French connection
And now GB taking the lead against Brazil at wembley
The americans doing the worm was rad too
That British lad, Michael Jamieson, looks on top form for the 200m breaststroke.
Would be great if they both get on the podium.
The final tomorrow is essential viewing.
GO TEAM GB!
Phelps slowed it down a bit but still, what a hero.
well done girls. canada up next on friday - tough game.
it's because most of their punters appear to be at the beach volleyball
years of perving on girls training all comes down to today.....just hope I don't get eye cramp at the beach volleyball!
90% of the clientele has seemed to be half-dead pensioners called Les.
That would be a genius crowd for the beach volleyball.
anyone want to predict the final score?
Anyone just see that thing on the news about the women's badminton doubles? Hilarious stuff.
Whoever lost the game would have got what was perceived to be a much easier draw in the next round, so they were literally just hitting the ball into the net on purpose, not even making it look like they were trying. Crowd booing.
After a few points they got a proper bollocking from one of the match officials who threatened to disqualify them both if they kept it up. They looked like naughty schoolchildren.
Gail Emms running commentry on the whole fiasco
