Guideline amount [pasta-centric]

Royter-Hatfood [Edit] [Delete] 50 replies 13:04, 18 July '12

How much pasta do you eat in one serving? Because the packets always suggest 100g per person, but a 500g bag never lasts more than 4 meals.

The whole system is just complete bollocks.

  • Literally nobody on the entire planet has ever once in their life cooked the exact right amount of pasta for one serving

Nobody, not me, not you, not Gino D'Acampo, nobody.

  • I got one of those aperture-type spaghetti measurers.

Only used it to measure my willy so far.

    deadonthestairs | 18 Jul '12, 13:05 | X
    • Assuming I don't bring any small children round for dinner

I'm guessing the other sizes are perfectly clean and usable?

      TheoGB @deadonthestairs | 18 Jul '12, 13:10 | X
    • my boyfriend won't let me measure his willy

he's bang out of order, right?

      sophiacherryx @deadonthestairs | 18 Jul '12, 13:50 | X
      • it's about 500g of spaghetti

        pieces_of_reece @sophiacherryx | 18 Jul '12, 14:21 | X
  • usually 1 500g bag = 4 portions

    so 125g

  • spaghetti = pound coin size per person

rice = 1 mug per two servings

    japes_ | 18 Jul '12, 13:07 | X
    • im going to follow this, it sounds spot on

      MissBass @japes_ | 18 Jul '12, 13:18 | X
      • No it doesn't.

Spaghetti should be a 50p coin size per person. Don't know where he got this pound coin bollocks from.

        eltham @MissBass | 18 Jul '12, 13:22 | X
        • £2 coin at least

depends on how hungry I am

          NoahVale @eltham | 18 Jul '12, 13:32 | X
  • 100g (dry weight)

Or 90g if I'm trying to be good, or up to 120g if I'm really hungry.

      you're mental

      andyvine @DaisyFlower | 18 Jul '12, 13:32 | X
      • I have to weigh it out

because if I had as much as I could eat, I'd be having about 200g which is far more than necessary.

        DaisyFlower @andyvine | 18 Jul '12, 13:41 | X
  • depends on the pasta

    cheers

    cyberdemon | 18 Jul '12, 13:09 | X
  • I usually get through a standard 500g bag in 3-4 meals

I just free pour it into boiling water. My problem with pasta is I'll just eat what's there..regardless of whether I have 100 or 200 grams, I'll just gobble it all up.

    jopzorz | 18 Jul '12, 13:11 | X
  • i can never get it right.

same for rice. in fact rice is worse.

          pieces_of_reece @andyvine | 18 Jul '12, 14:19 | X
    • 60g dry weight is about right for rice

Maybe up to 80g if you're particularly hungry.

      DaisyFlower @meths | 18 Jul '12, 13:13 | X
      • depends on the person.

        and the dish.

    • I always do more rice just incase

      Ta.

      meowington @meths | 18 Jul '12, 13:36 | X
  • MUG.

Seriously, fill a standard sized mug with pasta and that's enough for one adult. That's how I've always measured it.

Doesn't work with spaghetti mind, haven't worked out how much to use for that. My housemate reckons you make an 'o' with your thumb and forefinger and it's however much spaghetti you can put in there.

    Alex-in-Ciderland | 18 Jul '12, 13:17 | X
    • Unless he has tiny hands, or is cooking for four people, that's far too much

(The thumb and finger thing, not the mug.)

        yes you do

        Silkyskillz11 @MissBass | 18 Jul '12, 13:22 | X
  • i'll tell you what it definitely isn't...

    one handful.

    it's never, ever, that.

i tend to roughly put in 2.5 handfuls per person, because it doesn't swell in size all that much, really.

if there's any left, just eat it later. not rocket science, virgins.

    forzaborza | 18 Jul '12, 13:22 | X

        • The whole

if it is too much, have the rest the next day. But what about the ratio with the sauce. Too much pasta, too little sauce. You lot are fucking savages.

          JimmyHuntspill @TheWza | 18 Jul '12, 14:08 | X
      • you'll be overjoyed, i'm sure, to hear that i've just polished off a pasta salad

      • The most innuendo-centric thread I've read in a while.

So many jokes, so little time...

        NoahVale | 18 Jul '12, 13:35 | X
        • Get the bowl you are planning on serving it in

and fill it to about two thirds of how full you want it to be when it is done. That much.

With rice, measure out on the plate, with dry rice, the exact size and dimensions of what you would consider a very small, but not unpleasant breast. That much per person.
