what one factor more than any other?
peak coal was predicted in the late 19th century, but never came to pass as we switched to oil.
don't tempt him. He's a loose cannon.
you will be the first to whinge if i do
my challenge to you creaky is to distil your one factor into 8 or less words
but some still have nukes - general awfulness allover
THEO! delete creaky's post until he learns better brevity
Either that or the world will collapse in on itself because of fracking (I have no idea how to spell this).
unless you fall asleep
Apparently there is a massive natural gas reserve and it was fracking or some exploratory form of fracking that caused the earthquake in Blackpool.
too many people
Huh?! Come on. Aliens. Really nasty ones with big alien guns.
play 4 or 5 Magicians songs on repeat through loudspeakers
Well, some of us at least.
actually nah I think Aliens is the only thing that can SAVE the world.
Hear me out: the problem the world faces is that no-one is prepared to sacrifice national self interest in the interests of the planet globally: there's nothing that binds us together and gives us identity as 'The World'.
But... if we found Aliens existed (especially hostile ones, or ones with which we could trade) that would force us to bond together in order to deal with them and it would give us something to define ourselves AGAINST and therefore we'd have an effective (hopefully) world goverment that could deal with overpopulation/climate/whatever.
Ultimately entropy means that it'll all end in tears though. Heat Death of the Universe people. Bad times.
Think this is completely untrue. Many people change their lifestyles in order to be more environmentally friendly, and many people in rich nations consider global development to be just as important than economic growth of their own country. As people get richer, they have more time and energy to commit to non-selfish aims.
politicians are VERY unlikely to go 'hmmmm this will be unpopular with the voters at home in the short term, but will be in the long term interests of the planet so lets vote it through!'
And if enough voters at home support things like international development/environmental protection, then they will have to do something about it. Governments are doing stuff...just more slowly than many people would like. But whatever balance is struck, some people will complain.
Lack of matter and energy will mean that there's no gravitational repulsion between our universes three-brane and the neighbouring one. Slowly they'll draw together and collide and *BOOM*, a new universe full of matter and energy will arise from the quantum jitters.
GCSE-standard Theoretical Physics ftw.
absorbing all its water
bowl of rice is my favourite DiSism.
will make us utterly obsolete and destroy our civilization.
I don't reckon it be the extinction of humanity though.
as of it were a pie. seewhaddididthere.
If we're lucky, some will survive, and if we're even luckier, some will survive knowing how it went wrong the first time
and then we'll repeat the whole process, just with fewer fossil fuels and more chrome-plated ruins :)
except massive economic collapse will occur first
and people still wont give them up
everyone floats off into space hungry and dead.
or something to do with potatoes or protestants
sinful Protestants' evil ways cause a brown rot to develop and eat away at Potato Earth's core.
Potato Earth's surface floods with sinful Protestant butter: solars rays heat up the surface, all sinners cook in a sun-baked Potato Earth hell.
God neglects to use Potato Earth in his heavenly dauphinoise due to accumulation of unsightly Protestant families on its surface. Potato Earth grows sprouts and gets thrown away.
Some maniac in power will have their lab-monkeys cook it up and release it just to see what happens.
The only thing I can think of that's remotely likely to (a) do the job properly, and (b) actually happen, is a gamma burst from a dying star. Get in the way of one of those motherfuckers and we're all microwaved to ashes.
