The Great Gatsby film
So the trailer is out for The Great Gatsby. http://www.graziadaily.co.uk/fashion/archive/2012/05/23/the-great-gatsby-trailer-is-here--watch-carey-mulligan-and-leonardo-di-caprio-si.htm
Any thoughts? I wish they hadn't gone with Leonardo DiCaprio, he doesn't fit my idea of Gatsby at all.

Carey Mulligan is in ALL the films these days
Do you remember when this guy was in everything?
http://www.virginmedia.com/images/paul-reynolds-now.jpg
Literally everything.
She is like the female Fassbender....
It's been filmed in 3D, for fuck's sake.
Looks like all my worries that Baz Luhrmann would sacrifice substance for style are coming true...
Why has this been done in 3D?
What could that POSSIBLY add?
Some flapper's arse flying towards our faces.
Leo DiCaprio's forehead veins literally bursting out of the screen.
And so on. It's the Luhrmann way.
$$$ at the box office, is my guess.
But will people pay to see this in 3D?
Seeing as 3D sales are plummeting for action 3D movies?
True, but I never underestimate the sheer coke-fuelled folly of Hollywood executives.
it's as if the distant green light
is coming right at me
Apart from a few quid to the ticket sales?
Didn't see it was Baz Luhrmann, I suppose that might go a little way to explain the way it is going to look and why 3D
1x dimension
I hope the giant poster is wearing 3D glasses
I fucking HATE 3D films.
AH HAAAATE 3D
(that Herzog one was alright though).
Not seen that.
But every 3D film I have seen looks shit. Its always too dark and blurry. I probably won't see a 3D film again unless I see it in the imax. It just doesn't do anything for me. I don't go WOW THATS INCREDIBLE, I COULD TOUCH THAT, I just go 'I can't really see anything here'
That was amazing, but that's because it wouldn't have worked without 3D.
It's still the only 3D film I've seen where I think the 3D added something substantial to the experience though.
Never seen one
Probably never will, but then again, I'm not the target audience for Transformers, Piranha 3DD and Battleships
What about that Katy Perry documentary?
KATY PERRY 3D BOOBS!
(I will go and see this film but not in 3D)
*36D
I'll make do with these
http://www.gifflix.com/c/KATY_PERRY_GIFS/
I'd certainly make do with those.
Baz Luhrmann choose style over substance?
Girl, you trippin'
He's angling for that Claudia Winkleman spot.
It's such a great book, I think they might ruin it
oh well, and the 3d really would do nothing
the goggles do nothing!
Like the new design, though
http://i.imgur.com/RgRdE.jpg
those 3d bobs are the bees knees
it's as if
F Scott Fitzgerald's evocative prose is coming right at me
Guys, this comes out on the 26th of DECEMBER
Remind me about it again in 8 months
Boxing day?
I'm biz.
Boxing day is in seven months
Either Lucien wants to see it around Burn's Night or is a FUCKING IDIOT!
Its Lucien we're talking about so definitely
the latter
Joke's on both of you if you're planning on going in the first two weeks of release
I'll be sitting there in peace on the 26th January. You'll be there shoulder to shoulder with annoying plums snuffling away on their Malteasers
On January 26th?
Might have finished in the cinema by then
Oh wow
I didn't realise it was so far off.
Yeah, that looks pretty nice actually.
Quite looking forward to this.
3D?!
F Scott Fitzwhatsisface would be spinning in his grave!
Has someone started a Facebook group to protest this?!
Think it looks great.
I think Luhrman's OTT stylings will create an amazing looking jazz age, and DiCaprio and Mulligan have acting chops to carry it off. Not fussed either way about the 3D really.
Yeah, but your opinions are usually quite bad
Lend us a pen mate.
Every film Luhrmann has made has been worse than the previous one.
It's going to have to be terrible to be worse than Australia.
Film or country?
Is Australia even worth than Moulin Rouge?
Strewth.
Yeah, a lot worse, and I don't think much of Moulin Rouge.
IT WAS A WORLD THAT TIME FORGOT
HE WAS A MAN WHO THREW FANCY PARTIES
*Slo mo shot of Gatsby glowering menacingly next to a tray of cocktails*
SHE WAS A GIRL NAMED AFTER A SMALL FLOWER
*slo mo shot of Daisy diving for cover as plate glass window explodes behind her*
THERE WAS PLENTY OF IMAGERY ABOUT THE AMERICAN DREAM
*shot of American flag being riddled with machine gun bullets as Nick screams NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!*
IN THEATERS 2012
I'm actually looking forward to it although I'm still slightly apprehensive about it
I love the book and DiCaprio is a pretty perfect Gatsby in my opinion. From what i've read the 3D bits are only for the party sequences, still probably a massive cash-in but I'd rather pay the extra few quid for something that was shot in 3d rather than added in post-production which always looks terrible.
Shame they've cast Tobey Maguire as Nick, he wouldn't be my choice at all
I like 3D
cheers
I don't understand what's not to like? they are giving you an EXTRA DIMENSION
why would people hate that? why? just why?
I read the book very recently and enjoyed it.
I watched the 70s movie the other night, that was quite disappointing. I'm looking forward to this though, they make the parties look immense.
I'd completely fogotten about the previous film
I remember it now, we were shown it in school. I can't picture any of the actors, though, I can't say it had any impact on my imagining of the book.
It had that guy in...from all the films.
It was a bit of a non-event.
it looks relaly good
i don't like the look of it
Wouldn't it be great if he made it in the same tacky way as Romeo + Juliet?
Hawaiian shirts and drag queens and neon religious iconography everywhere? It'd be so great.
Haven't seen this trailer yet.
Mulligan and Edgerton: great casting
Maguire and Di Caprio: nah.
my copy is a tattered charity shop purchase with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow on the front, so naturally that's how I picture Daisy and Gatsby.
I can see Mulligan being perfect as Daisy, but Di Caprio, IDK...great actor, but he isn't dashing enough. ...wait...Gosling. omg, and he would NAIL that Gatsby look, you know the one.
as for Nick...well I never really pictured him all that vividly. I can only imagine Maguire making him too much of a wet lettuce.
yeah, they missed a trick by not considering Gosling
Film ruined.
Gosling is a pretty bad choice.
Too effeminate and kooky for Gatsby.
The problem with Nick/Maguire
is that he's not much of a character in the book; he doesn't really impact the story much but he's on every page as he's really the eyes through which the reader sees the rest of the story. The film needs to still tell everything from his perspective whilst covering up for the fact that he doesn't really say or do very much; I really can't see how Tobey Maguire is gonna pull that off
I dunno, I don't think he's just a narrator.
He acts as the moral centre of the book, who sees the emptiness of the people and times. I do see why it is a difficult role as he is a slightly blank/introspective character, but I reckon Maguire is as good as any modern actor to play that role. Maybe Casey Affleck could have done it.
Bruce Dern pulled it off quite well in the original.
Casey Affleck would've been absolutely perfect for it
He was probably overlooked as his brother was originally playing Tom
this looks guff.
but y'know. the boy baz isn't really for me, so i wasn't expecting much.
still. it's good that the trailer is a blank as i remember the book. i read it two years ago, and i can't even remember the plot. if someone asked me what it was about, i could honestly only say...
'well...there's this guy gatsby. jazz age, parties. those haircuts. and a girl, i think. in america. and...ermm...'
pretty much exactly what the trailer tells us.
I really like Baz Luhrmann.
Romeo + Juliet has one of my favourite film openings.
I think the way to treat this is the same as Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette- it's lost all the context/nuances of the subject but is a fluffy delight.
I think the 70's version got a lot of things right, I think the main casting is pretty much perfect but the script and the overall film was really flat. It's a shame 'cos someone could make a really good, faithful adaptation of the book.
I'm definitely gonna see it and probably just enjoy it for what it is-an overblown, preposterous Baz Luhrmann extravaganza.
Exactly
^ This
LOOKS WANK
they've dumbed it down so much
not sure how you can tell that from the trailer tbh
using Kanye West and Jay Z for the backing music isn't a good start
i personally think that it works really well
Literally just this minute finished reading the book
Was waiting for something interesting to happen all the way through it. Absolutely boring waste of time.
SPOILERS:
Rich man with big house has some parties. Ends up dying.
I can't believe you've done that
*spoiler*...
does he die?
i can't even remember him dying. did i even read this fucking bookjesus...
It was written in such a stupid way I'm not even sure either. I think so. Most pointless book I've ever read.
If you honestly think this...
...then I'm going to have to call you an absolute dullard.
Sorry but rules are rules.
i'm not saying it's pointless..
i'm just saying, i can't remember a thing about it. i mean. i just think there might be something in that.
i mean. i've seen 'Commando' once. but i remember that film man. i fucking....i can quote you that shit. 'don't disturb my friend'...'hey matrix, you said you'd kill me last'...etc etc.
and i....i just. i can't fucking remember a thing about the great fucking gatsby. i can't even remember if he was actually that great. i'm just saying. that must mean something.
I can remember there's a green light in there somewhere
I remember because I did it for AS-level and our teacher kept banging on about it for fucking ages as if it actually meant something. The rest of it's forgettable, unlikeable drivel.
However, all of ^this may just be a result of me doing it at school, which is a surefire way to not like a book. If I'd read it myself, who knows..?
This is better than any film could be
http://www.harkavagrant.com/index.php?id=259
:D
that is incredible
cool
another classic I don't have to read.
The 'Great' Gatsby?
the bloody boring Gatsby more like. hear me yeah?
aren't you a big fan of Revolutionary Road?
they have not dissimilar themes and style
i can see that..
but they're so, so different.
i love revolutionary road as much as Gatsby failed to move me in any way. but i see your point.
For some reason, I've always assumed The Great Gatsby was about a train
Is it not about a train?
that's Passenger 57 with Wesley Snipes
are you thinking of Under Siege 2?
No everyone, he's thinking of The Train That Couldn't Slow Down
pretty sure anyone who doesn't like the book
is missing a brain part. the bit that would enable them to process things like beauty, emotion...like, I'm thinking the idea of owning a really big train set is really appealing to them.
Nah...
I loved the book
and would bite your arm off for a really big train set.
So fuck you.
full disclosure:
I'd quite like an epic train set. it just felt like a sick burn.
with hills and tunnels and a conductor's whistle? awesome.
Nah there's no beauty
Just tryhard, sterile attempts at it.
untrue
seriously, that's mental. it's effortless and heartfelt. just 'cause it's impossibly elegant doesn't make it try-hard. and if you think it's sterile, you are missing the point. there's a wealth of darkness underneath the imagery of 1920s high society glamour. the contrast is intoxicating.
Luhrmann wants stabbing.
This is my favourite book
Probably shouldn't watch this, should I?
Is it more indie bellend
to say this looks shit (because it does) or to be contrary and say it doesn't look shit (even though it does)? I want to maximise my indie bellendry.
The second option
Pretend it's good like people did with the New Girl
New Girl is brilliant though
much better than the Great Gatsby
Hmm
not put back until next summer

*now
Aww, what?
Even though I wasn't sure if it would be good, I was still looking forward to it.
100
best trailer i've ever seen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ozkOhXmijtk
calm down
I'm dreading this being brilliant cos I said I didn't like the book
was ok
pretty annoying though
daisy being a flake in bullet-time blew my mind.
oppan charleston style
