Has anybody made their own beer?
Any recommendations as to which kit/starter pack to buy?
It is one of those things that is definitely a money saver. I have an apple tree in the back garden, absolutely massive. I picked a load last year but in the procrastination about how to juice them and how to store them, they went all mouldy.
I would get a second hand kit, the amount of people who try and give up means they should be quite cheap.
I enjoyed the John Bull IPA, easy to make and tasted really good (good party beer). I did it in a pressure barrel and it lasted a week (only had a few pints left over though). Bottled a few batches which seems the way to go, but fiddly and more expensive. I'm on the look out for a good Pale Ale (US style).
really nice. Keep meaning to move on from kits, and do it from scratch (ish), but other stuff keeps coming up. Maybe next month.
and don't be afraid of picking up one that's slightly more pricey than others, it'll usually taste a lot better.
I make my own beer, but I've graduated from kits to buying all my ingredients separately and doing it that way, which isn't as much of a leap as it may seem when you're first starting out.
Just bottled a 6.5% IPA on Tuesday, it seems like it'll be ace after some bottle conditioning. Going to put a brown ale on this Saturday too :)
Love the idea of brewing from scratch but am a complete novice at this. The parents used to brew everything, beer, wine, cider, spirits, but have thrown away all their old kit. So thinking maybe a starter kit to get the equipment might be a good idea.
then you want to graduate to an all-extract brew where you buy each ingredient yourself (depending on the kit, this may involve the same brewing process).
Then extract with speciality grain (where I'm at now) and finally onto all-grain (where I hope to be in a few months time).
Once you get the process down, brew days are really fun :)
what are you going to name it?
