This is just really, really sad.
GamesMaster was great, wasn't it?
who fought and lost his finance in the war would say tbh. I doubt that kind of thing makes you look objectivly.
Him losing his fiance at 20 and then being a life long batchelor cos know one could relplace her is very sad.
So glad somebody went there.
good lord what a completely reprehensible little englander he is. Such a shame.
it's unfortunate and inappropriate and sad that he thinks that way. But it's also understandable.
The past is a different country etc etc
But I think in this case the things he's saying are just plain racist rather than merely xenophobic.
I guess I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt in that if you lose the love of your life in a way like that then I doubt you're going to be rational about things.
He would be a better person if he was like ''they killed my bird but I don't hate them Germans or nuthing'' but I guess forgiveness doesn't always come easy.
He lays into every single european raced based on horrifically outdated stereotypes. Also, killing all germans is not a rational emotional response. Maybe if he said he wanted to kill the german who killed his wife, or Goering, or Hitler I'd give him the benefit of the doubt.
He's just a sad, twisted old man.
hmm, I'm starting to see a theme emerging here.
Hitler wasn't either
this is the first 'I don't like foreigners' comment he's made, he's pretty much perfect for the Mail.
Sounds a fair bit like he might be.
is pretty good. probably in my top 3 krauts.
his trousers are VERY high here
if it's below belt height it counts as genitals, not belly.
sat in that library (it's in his house) and he was a real gent. he had a picture of himself chilling with einstein on the wall.
Patrick Moore: Why We Should Have Dropped Ten Atom Bombs Each on Germany and Japan.
& he can never forgive them.
What he says may not be right.
But i understand why he says it.
emotion has overridden his judgement.
Not The Germans. One german or several germans, if you want to be picky.
or, everyone who isn't him / fought on the side of the allies
It's because he's being a xenophobic idiot.
...because you think he's that cuddly old goat off the telly who talks about the stars and that? So, therefore, you seek to understand the sentiments he mentions as opposed to dismissing them had someone like, oh I dunno... Paul Daniels or Bruce Forsyth had said them?
The justification for his comments in this thread are mental. No such understanding goes on for other forms of unforgiving xenophobia, from less palatable characters, so it shouldn't happen here either.
Fuck's sake DiS.
into one entity. You reprehensible bigot.
I understand why some people sat in the working mens clubs (or wherever) say racist things and go on about sending them home/stealing our jobs etc.
Doesn't mean I think it's fine but you need to understand why people say things if you want to change their opinion not just shout racist and be done with it.
(This isn't directed at you btw, I mean ''you'' in general terms).
Gamesmaster was great though wasn't it.
I'm not saying anyone's condoning it.
What I am saying is that a number of people are saying 'this is all very sad' or 'the chap's heartbroken - I can understand' and I believe that, if it hadn't been someone who's held in such avuncular affection and was an unpopular sort on this website (I dunno... like Phil Collins or something) then he wouldn't have been afforded the privilege of understanding. It'd have just been like 'the guy's a wanker, burn his grave and piss on the flames' etc.
There isn't a shred of condoning in this thread, but strange how much effort has gone into understanding it.
And, no, gamesmaster was bollocks. As is 95% of stuff from your childhood that you look back on with a nostalgic warmth.
by the dead finance/never love again angle. I was because I'm all like emo an that.
So yes, if it had been Patrick Moore hates Germans apropos of nothing then I doubt it would have been ''defended'' to the same level.
But I want you to clear something up - are you saying Paul Daniels is a racist?!
But yeah, course he is. The bald cunt.
perfectly acceptable to say that all Germans, the large majority of which would not have been alive during the time for starters, should be dead.
probably because it's the kind of love I'll never experience because I'm a cold husk of a person.
Am I the only one?
probs wanks over the moon innit
No it isn't. It's very sad his fiance got killed and I feel very sorry for him.
But plenty of people (many his age) lost loved ones in the war and developed the sense and perspective to see it wasn't the fault of all Germans and that to blame everyone in an entire nation (and especially everyone in an entire nation living now) for what happened is xenophobic and, more unforgivably for someone who's basically a scientist, irrational and beyond reason.
He's being very unpleasant, very stubborn and very, very silly. And, sad though his personal circumstances are, they in absolutely no way excuse that.
I found the stuff he said abhorrent, but was made sad by the stuff that has happened to him to twist his mind like that. As you said, he's an intelligent man of science yet that event has so wrought him it overrides every ounce of logic in him.
I don't think it's wrong to better understand what makes people think the way they do
But I did think some of the early posts in the thread were a bit too sympathetic and implying he shouldn't be condoned for it. Which he should be. He's basically said the people of an entire nation are better off dead.
and saying his view shouldn't be criticised too much because of the context.
Either hating the Germans or the Japanese.
There are people on forums like this who still harbour desires of vengeance against people who bullied them at school so I don't think it's necessarily too hard to believe some wouldn't ever lose that feeling based on the War.
But certainly more than enough did to show that his views are not an inevitable consequence of his age and experience. And it still doesn't change the fact his views are utterly appalling.
Hating their children/grandchildren is another.
I made an analogy with something PATENTLY far less serious yet STILL had repercussions into someone's life decades later.
why has this been given any coverage at all?
we should be talking about this instead.
We had our own observatory. Yep. (Grammar school natch, not paid/private/whatever.)
Can't say these comments are much of a surprise.
I'm sure we've all felt a bit like that after Balonz has posted in one of our threads.
as if it was just a light-hearted opinion piece.
i'll know things worked out alright
He may well have had good reason to set him off down that path, but he's been extremely unpleasant most of his life.
Anyway can't we address the main point in the OP which was that Gamesmater was great wasn't it...
he monocle did, however, garner a following in the stylish lesbian circles of the earlier 20th century, with lesbians donning a monocle for effect. Such women included Nicole Martinez, Una Lady Troubridge, Radclyffe Hall, and Weimar German reporter Sylvia von Harden (the painting Portrait of the Journalist Sylvia Von Harden by German expressionist painter Otto Dix depicts its subject sporting a monocle).
His performances are very interesting. i can barely make out his mumbling at times, plus he is fucking enourmous - look where his trousers are! Who even makes trousers like that?
rather than all Germans.
I loved Gamesmaster....and then completely u-turned on it and fucking hated it. Dunno why.
I must have stopped watching by that point....Dominic Diamond was an irritating douchebag, maybe that's why i stopped watching.
Either way judging by that photo I doubt he really gives a fuck what any of us think
You're such a contrary bunch of tryhard indie bellends.
about, for example, Americans. And I bet Americans haven't killed their fiance.
<going off point now I know>
All Americans should be dead
you just can't help it can you!
Ban this schwein!
if you want to get a :D from DaddyorChips.
I'm getting Patrick Moore messed up with Patrick Stewart.
How long do we have to wait?
I've just been picturing Patrick Stewart rather than this fat old guy with riduclous trousers.
"When did having an opinion become racist??
