Basically I was in Kingston last night and in the early hours of the morning my friends and I were approached and given a bottle of water an a bacon sandwich. Amazing - obviously it was those 'street angel' christians that tend to the hungry and often drunk people around at that time of night.
Anyway, I stayed there to wait for my taxi home and my friends went to their homes in other taxis. They asked what my views were and I said I was a firm agnostic because I haven't had an experience to prove or disprove religion. Therefore have no right to make an assumption.
They said that if you do not accept God into your life then you will go to hell. I tried to understand it, but I couldn't get my head around it. My confusion was this, if I were to have no knowledge of God due to poor education and then walked out into the road and got hit by a bus would I go to hell? The woman said that I would. Even if you are a truly virtuous person this would still happen - this notion really troubled me.
I told them that I was envious of them, because after all to them at least, they have this amazing communion with God. I'd love to have that, even if there was no such thing as God. You would lead a very peaceful and comfortable life in the face of death for example.
I still have that problem though that it's you accepting God into your life that keeps you from hell. If she said you only went to hell if you actively turned your back on God then I could maybe understand more.
Another thing they both said was if you sit there and speak to God then you will have a reply and it will be almost instant and like a revelation. These people genuinely all swore that they asked God to show them themselves and he did. I can't see that happening - although I'd love deep down for it to be possible.
What are your views on this. I try to be very open minded and we did discuss other things ie other religions and stuff, but I can't remember the whole conversation, but it got me thinking anyway.
What do you think?
