ongoing Boxing Thread...
There are a few boxing fans on here amongst all the veggies, cupboard dwellers and plastic femininsts, right? Quite a few decent fights coming up soon...
Ginger George Groves fight with Kenny Anderson this Friday called off due to 'injury', but really because Groves has been offered a world title shot, quite probably against Robert Stieglitz. Extremely premature.
Kell Brook v Matthew Hatton this weekend. Very exciting, but i'm not sure it'll be a great mix of styles given that, well, Hatton doesn't have any, and Brook can look unremarkable against durable opponents. Lee Purdy and Carl Frampton both on the undercard.
Sergio Martinez v Matthew Macklin on St Pad's Day. Macklin's good value, but not world class. Can see another brave but ultimately unsuccessful title attempt, really.
Sounds like neither Derek Chisora nor David Haye will be fighting anyone any time in the near future. Probably for the best.
Audrey Harrison's latest embarrassing comeback delayed.
Other big fights due:
- Bernard Hopkins v Chad Dawson rematch. Meh.
- Floyd v Cotto (yes, please)
- Saul Alvrez v Shane Mosley
- Froch v Bute (probably at the City Ground)
- Manny v Tim Bradley
- Berto v Ortiz
Anyone? No. Okay then.

Khan/Peterson in May should be tasty.
i hope Peterson beats him again.
definitely something dodgy about Hat Man near the ring, but Peterson seems a thoroughly likeable chap, and i personally didn't understand the outrage over either a) the ref penalising Khan after several warnings, or b) the decision itself given that most people had it by a round or two either way.
i had Khan by a round, even with two points off, but half of the rounds could've easily gone either way.
I don't get all this back slapping and general agreement that Khan is getting
about not taking Chisora's license back because he'll "be on the streets".
Is Chisora a pauper or something?
Far from it.
He's apparently from quite a wealthy Zimbabwean family...and got £330k for fighting Klitschko recently, which whilst small fry so far as heavyweight world title purses might go, isn't a bad little earner.
Just turkeys not voting for Christmas, innit.
The other thing about Frank Warren:
Chisora lost his license for the brawl. He's still got to go to court about slapping Vitali and spitting in Wlad's face - of which 100k is being witheld of his winnings from that fight.
Frank Warren was moaning that it's not fair to punish him twice for the same thing....Frank, they're 2 seperate incidents you t1t.
looking forward to hatton vs. brook
hopefully brook will win. always good to see sheffield boxers doing well, curtis woodhouse aside.
don't really follow boxing these days - can't afford Sky/PPV etc
would be fair to say the sport really needs some characters tho. especially in the heavyweight division. those two Ukranian lumps are so fucking dull.
if you don't know what you're watching, yes.
i used to think similar, but i like the lads now.
great role models compared to most of them, tbh, and definitely underrated technically, though they wouldn't have been dominant in some other eras, i think that's fair enough to say.
if you don't know what you're watching!
I know duck and dive and bob and weave. what more do I need? pah
Also, Frank Warren coming out of that whole thing squeaky clean really sickens me.
Heard him being interviewed this morning, he even had the gaul to bring Froch's pseudo 'fight rigging' into equation.
Really looking forward to the Alvarez fight
if the guy's looked after well, he could go on to be a great.
You forgot Rogan v Fury on the 14th...they'll probably end up bumming if the press conference is anything to go by...
Rogan's done...
but it's a pretty interesting fight given both of their backgrounds.
Might get a bit tasty at ringside, for sure.
Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Brandon Rios
is the one im looking forward too. April 14th. Think it's on SkySports but not sure yet.
Gamboa is great to watch, although he's not on the telly much. Incredibly fast hands, technically skilled (Cuban gold medallist) and always involved in fantastic fights. He goes on the offensive from the start normally, so it's always fun to watch.
He's moved up two weight classes for this one though, and whilst I haven't seen much of Rios i've heard good things, so it could be tough.
Boxing is good.
So this one got cancelled :(
do you think this 200 million dollar fight will happen?
Floyd Mayweather v Pacquiao
or is FM a bit scared?
I am going to watch my friend take part in his first boxing match tonight
Gonna shout UPPERCUT a lot
anyone seen a lad called Adrien Broner?
damn. that kid likes brutally knocking people out.
Broner's the guy that fights like mayweather eh?
Did he rap his ringwalk? He looked good, but en the other guy seemed rubbish.
well...the boxing was good.
particularly enjoyed the Welsh lad winning.
wonder if anyone anywhere had a Wales (RU), Swansea, him-themed treble?
the Martinez/Macklin undercard has been excellent.
Indeed
These current two like to throw bombs.
I've put £3 on a draw between Macklin and Martinez: I think Sergio will take it, but 85/1 was too decent to pass up!
Any of you guys ever considered taking it up?
Boxing I mean.
nah.
rely on my looks and brains to get by, couldn't risk destroying either.
I know what you mean.
I sparred with the Welsh junior champion before. Gave me a black eye.
He was fourteen. I'm twenty one. So as well as ruining my looks and brain - I think my reputation might begin to slide a little too...
I do a weekly boxercise class
Consists of pairing up with someone and doing pad/crashpad work, but it's non-contact. For keeping fit, it is tremendous. My only reservation with actual boxing is that I don't want to get punched in the head. :-)
I started because of the fitness thing.
But soon got over the punching in the head bit. The weird thing I find is that I love it as a sport that I'm involved in...but to be honest I don't really follow it that properly. Which probably sounds odd. I should really make more of an effort with watching.
don't think Macklin has a real chance...
but hope i'm wrong.
Martinez by late stoppage after taking most of the rounds.
great fight.
have given Macklin three so far, Martinez two and one split at the halfway point.
would still put my cash on a late Martinez KO as he's clearly the more concussive puncher, but Macklin's doing very, very well.
Looks likely!
credit to Macklin; brilliant for 7 rounds.
but Martinez showed his class and experience and breezed it after that.
no way back after that 11th round, which had to be a 10-7. right decision to pull him out.
absolutely no shame in taking Martinez 11 rounds.
Radiohead
longest introduction to a fight i've ever seen.
twenty fucking minutes they've been in the ring introducing the fighters.
anyone on Fureh v Rogie Bear?
Tyson's switching it up, mayn.
...
What the hell was up with Fury's shorts?
Dunno if it was those or his awkward southpaw stance but he looked pretty stupid the first couple of rounds. Got his jab working and finished smartly though.
great fight on SS1 now.
Froch v Bute tonight.
50/50 fight.
should be a cracker.
Froch is undeoubtedly Britain's greatest modern fighter, but i fear this might be a war too many.
Bute on points.
I'm really concerned
I think he should have retired with dignity after Ward, super six surely set him up for life? Bute is hungry (even though he is surprisingly old) and has a nice style, if it wasn't for home town advantage I'd be heavily backing Bute.
Partly agree.
I'd never blame any fighter for not wanting to go out on a loss, but this is a very dangerous fight, sure. I'd have liked him to take a comfortable win against a mid-ranked fighter, then pack it in. I'd even like to see him face Groves or De Gale, and he'd beat either.
Hats off to him, though. I agree with Bunce, few fighters, if any, have ever gobbled up such a tough run of fights like he has. He'll retire unknown by most Brits, but as i said above, for me he ranks alongside, or even above Lewis, Calzaghe, Hatton, Eubank, etc.
anyone looking forward to Bradley v Pacquaio tonight?
Jorge Arce on the undercard, too, and Mike Jones, who may fight Kell Brook soonish.
I wouldn't rule Bradley out. Think he's got the tools to hurt Manny, or at least spoil. My money would be on Manny on points, possibly after a bit of a clash of styles, but i don't see it being a cert by any means.
Bradley certainly seems to be talking the talk. Hard to say how much of that's bluster at this point. Not sure he'd have ducked Khan if he was that confident in himself, tbh.
I'm not going to embarrass myself by making predictions after the above
But I think Bradley's style is such that is should be a good fight, he's certainly better than the last few guys Pac man has faced.
...
Pacquaio needs a decent show, especially if he's got any hopes of a) fighting mayweather; and b) beating him. His last cple of fights have been shaky to say the least.
No way was that a split that way
...
wut? AT LEAST 8-4 to Pac by my reckoning.
Manny landed 94 more punches, press scoring is all in the region of 115-113 to 117-111 Pacquiao
November rematch was already booked before the fight
"Arum, who has contracts with both fighters, said: "I'm going to make a lot of money on the rematch, but this [decision] was outrageous."
Chinny reckon
some decent-looking fights on tonight...
Sky Sports 1 now & Channel 5 from 10pm.
DERRY MATTHEWS v GAVIN REES
Matthews somehow beat Anthony Crolla, a real decent prospect from Manchester to win the British and European Middleweight titles, after previously being thought to be over the hill. Rees has held a world-title and is a proper terrier. Halfway now, Matthews shading it early, but had now faded, and has a cut. Fancied Rees to win it late and still do.
PREDICTION: REES BY LATE STOPPAGE.
KELL BROOK v CARSON JONES
IBF Welterweight title fight, Brook heavily fancied and isn't far off being world class. Jones is a banger, though, but lost a few early on in his career. Could be a cracker. Hard to call. Got a fiver on Jones, just because of the value, but think Brook might win it by KO in the early-mid rounds.
PREDICTION: BROOK BY KO, ROUNDS 4-5
TYSON FURY v VINNY DOORMANORSUTIN
No idea who this latest clubber is. They seem to be protecting Fury, but he's been caught a couple of times in his last two fights, though is apparently in shape at the moment. Early KO for Fury.
PREDICTION: FURY IN 3 ROUNDS.
GREGORSZ PROKSA v KERRY HOPE
Welsh journeyman v English-based Pole. Fought in May and it was a cracker, Pope unexpectedly winning the European Middleweight title. Proksa's the better fighter, though, so i'd expect him to win.
PREDICTION: PROKSA MID-ROUNDS STOPPAGE
WLADIMIR KLITSCKO v TONY THOMPSON
Pointless fight. The latest carriage clock to soak up big Ukranian digs for half-an-hour. Hard to predict, Wlad might decide to take him long, or smash him up early doors. Went 11 when they last fought.
PREDICTION: KLITSCHKO EITHER VERY EARLY OR VERY LATE
Any of you girly windbags bothering?
watching the klitchko pre fight card
illie v seferi, cruiser weights.
Wow!
w'happen
Brook and Jones smashed shit out of eachother for 12 rounds.
Brook got the decision, and did the better work, but Jones troubled him a fair bit.
Really good fight.
fury v meatbag
klitchko v thompson, didnt want to box the 1st round then bullied him.
any of you non-dullards looking forward to this weekend's fights?
Haye v Chisora - wasn't for this initially, and don't think either really deserve to be boxing, but it has become AN EVENT now, no doubt about that. Haye's big favourite, but he's been inactive for two years whilst Del Boy's had four fights, two against very good opponents.
Khan v Garcia - TEAR-UP, BITCHES. Win/win all round, really. When Khan's on form, he's as exciting as any fighter on the planet. When he's not, you get to see Amir Khan getting repeatedly punched in the face. Got a feeling this will be the Fight of the Year, champs.
Watching both. Delboy to punch himself out by the 5th, if he gets that far?
I think the Khan fight will be immense, looking forward to see what both of them are made of, I think Garcia might just edge it.
haye - chisora's on boxnation isn't it?
wonder if they'll pull they stunt they did with the klitschko - chisora fight and screen it for all...
I think that was down to system issues, wasn't it?
Probably caused by thousands of people trying to sign up at the last minute.
Not sure how i feel about BoxNation, to be honest. They do have some good fights, particularly from over the pond, but they'll have to get a few more and fill up a bit of the downtime/filler slots before i put my hand in my pocket, though i may well sign up today and cancel tomorrow (if you can still do that, idk).
Not going to watch the Haye/Chisora fight
as I think it's all a bit silly.
Looking forward to Khan/Garcia, though. Should be a cracker, as you say.
Will be watching Haye Chisora for the EVENTness of it.
Don't think it will be much of a fight mind. Much more up for Khan Garcia like you say. Anyone know what time the ringwalk is expected to be for that one. Silly o clock in the morning I expect.
4am
Ouch. Might not make that one.
Bah.
I'm blatantly going to get home from the boozer tonight and fall asleep on the sofa waiting for it to start.
^^ this ^^
Got a feeling Haye v Chisora is going to turn into a total farce. Both of them are such utter cunts too.
Khan v Garcia should be awesome, really excited about it. If i was a betting man I'd go with Khan in the 9th round.
is the haye v chisora fight going to be worth the effort of finding a steam for?
i quite ike to watch a good boxing match but know little about it. whenever i've seen haye fight it's been pretty shite
im watching it anyway
cheers chumps
I knew that Haye would have it in the 5th.
Then again, so did everyone else.
anyone staying up for the Khan fight?
Might get som shuteye then get back up
so tired
fucking hell
youve got to stop that
i think this is the most dissapointing day of sport i've had when there's been no
proper football or cricket.
Can't believe i didn't back Garcia.
Thought Khan would win, but 11/2, ffs!
It's pretty obvious to me that Khan simply isn't tough enough for tear-ups. As much as he's been in a couple of crackers, his punch resistance is actually pretty poor. If he can discipline himself to counterpunch, i don't see why he can't beat anyone in the world around those weights bar the big two...but if he gets suckered into brawls then Maidana (who'd win any rematch, imho), Rios, and Alexander, Berto, Bradley at welterweight are just going to beat him up.
Thought he boxed the perfect fight until the first knockdown, but once the bombs started coming his head went west. They were hardly great punches either, just basic over the top right and lefts that a fighter of Khan's class should be able to avoid all day.
not to rub it in
but I spontaneously stuck a tenner on Garcia on betfair in the minutes before the fight, kid looked totally in the zone. I'm not gonna diss Amir too much cos I like the guy but you can have all the talent, speed and footwork in the world but if you can't take a punch you're not gonna get far, as soon as he took a couple of solid shots he was all over the shop. What the fuck was he doing talking about fighting Mayweather before he'd even got this one out of the way, he can forget about that now. Garcia, however, looks like the real deal.
Also Haye Chisora was slightly better than I expected, I guess Delboys plan was to take it into the later rounds and grind him down but he was carrying so much weight that it never looked like going that far, he was blowing like a stressed whale after 2 rounds. Some great combinations from Haye, makes you wish he'd spend more time in a ring doing that and less time out of one talking absolute bollocks
Still lots of talk about Khan moving up a weight...
but i wonder if a catchweight fight against a domestic opponent from the weight BELOW his current division may make sense - say Ricky Burns, Kevin Mitchell, or even John Murray.
Burns vs Mitchell
in september is gonna be a proper tear-up, cant wait for that one
For sure.
Burns has to be the most improved fighter in Britain.
Looked pretty exceptional against Rocky Martinez and Michael Katsidis.
...
Anyone else think that Kahn is a bit too technical? He seems to want to fight very proper, and when he comes up against people who harrass and fight with a bit of attitude and heart he seems to not know what the hell to do. Hes a good fighter, but needs to get a bit of a mean edge or something.
i think its pretty clear that khan doesnt have a chin
god knows where he goes from here if he cant take one good hit.
Not so sure.
His didn't do too badly against, say, Maidana, did he?
I'm not convinced good boxers necessary need good chins. Sure, it helps, but if you're disciplined, and if your footwork's good enough, you'll get by more often than not.
Garcia's first big punch, which if i'm remembering correctly was the one which did the damage, didn't really connect with his chin. It was more a neck/jaw shot.
Bottom line is, Khan's not going to have a very long career if he doesn't quickly realise that he's a backfoot fighter. It's not to everyone's tastes, some even call it running, but though we all like to see a tear-up, when it's done well counterpunching is a real art. Khan's got all the tools to do it well, i don't know why he doesn't stick to it.
I'm not sure, that punch would have taken most people down. I think Khan looked, unsurprisingly, overtrained.
Maybe even a bit 'slight' - i think the gameplan was speed and not power, and that cost him. Garcia just noted that he leaves himself open and manage to catch it at the worst time (for Khan).
Chavez vs Martinez in a week's time
up for that
rebuild
Ricky Hatton comeback confirmed.
<sad face>
Old news Audley
Nope.
Been rumoured and denied several times, but only actually confirmed yesterday.
Presser on Friday.
Cheers.
Frank Warren confirmed it last week
Knockdown after Knockdown Audley....
no he didn't.
he spoke about the possibility of it.
(he's not getting up from that one, Jim!)
Yep he did Audley...
That's why i put 'Frank Warren confirmed it last week',Dur.
you're telling fibs again.
<7...8...9...10. This one's OVER!>
You could have been a contender as well....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82w19Zsn7-s
your comeback fight's on Channel 5 in four weeks time.
v Curtis Woodhouse.
3am.
your purse is £850.
Audley dear boy your my warm up act....
How does it feel down there???
hmm
feel a bit queasy about this. best case is probably fighting a couple of no-marks and then a khan fight? i'd definitely watch it. wouldn't bet against him either.
Couple o' good fights on tonight.
FRAMPTON v MOLITOR (SS1)
Think Frampton might be the real deal. Would fancy him against any of the other top British fighters at his weight - Munroe, Galahad, even Quigg, but Molitor is (or was, idk) very tough. Seen him come to Britain several times and win well, but he's getting on a bit now and has been quite inactive. Boxing's about matchmaking, though, and British promoters particularly have a habit of getting overseas fighters just when they're at the tipping point of their careers.
PREDICTION: Frampton by early stoppage.
BURNS v MITCHELL (BoxNation)
Arguably the biggest domestic fight out there at the moment. Could go either way. Burns is certainly the most-improved British fighter, better technically, and has fought very well against some very good opponents. Mitchell's hard to predict; could punish Burns physically, could 'do a Hatton' (throw the tactics manual out of the window and go forward in straight lines).
PREDICTION: Burns by late stoppage.
http://www.wiziwig.tv/broadcast.php?matchid=171443&part=sports
Burns looked amazing
Afghanistan hosting its first pro fight
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-20137782
Emanuel Steward died last week.
Pretty sad.
Arguably the greatest boxing trainer of all time.
i cant find a fight time or stream for nathan cleverly
any halp?
i've never not found a fight through WiZiWiG.
Been very disappointed with Cleverly's progress over the last year or two. He should've been in with world-class opponents by now, and he looks a bit unmotivated to me. Don't know too much about this stand-in, but Coyne might've given him a test.
Hopefully, this Polish unit can catch Klitschko, but i wouldn't bet on it. Their undercards are always shite, though.
cheers
yeah, i think the fact he can box circles around most in the division has lead to some pretty conservative fights, not sure how good he's really gonna be still. the stand-in is a sioux indian apparently.
seen anything of wach? is he good or just massive?
-
It's weird how his and Tony Bellew's careers have gone since they fought. Bellew's limited technically, but would fight anyone and is taking dangerous fights and winning the public over. Cleverly's being very carefully matched, arguably protected, and people seem to be losing interest in him.
He needs a big fight, and they're there - winnable (though very tough) fights against opponents at or beyond the tipping point of their careers (Hopkins, Dawson, Bute). A domestic win against any of those could reignite his career.
Not seen anything of Wach, but Polish fighters are typically hard but technically poor. There's always the chance/hope that he could catch Wladimir; who has been KO'd by unremarkable fighters before - Lamon Brewster, the late Corry Sanders, plus some journeyman early in his career, but i thought that about Mormeck, Haye, Rahman, and they got nowhere near.
I'd expect Cleverly to bore his way to a points victory, and Wlad to get Wach out of there within four rounds.
aye hopkins looks like being talked up
would be a tough one, have to say i've not seen him since the roy jones jr fight but as old as he is i'd back bernie to outmatch cleverly in terms of skill and power. unless he's fallen off the cliff in the last couple years like.
good chin shown by the big lump, wouldn't want to watch that fight again though.
this wasn't strictly speaking boxing but still
http://gifsoup.com/view2/4277753/cung-le-o.gif
Really, really not looking forward to the Hatton fight tonight.
The more i hear about his troubles post the Pacquaio defeat the more i'm concerned about him. I honestly thought he was too smart to get back in the ring, though i can completely understand why training, getting fit, and being back in the public eye might be good for his mental health short term, results permitting.
I don't necessarily believe his reasons for coming back. He says it's for redemption, but what if he's KO'd again, this time infront of his home crowd, where would that leave him? Even if he wins a poor version of a title, it's hardly white horse stuff, is he just going to call it a day and all's well, i'm not sure.
I think it's much more likely that he's fighting to save his promotions company, who were dropped by Sky earlier this year. It's a shame, because his promoting career has so far been very promising, but there's just nowhere for him to go with it now Matchroom and Hennessey have exclusivity deals with Sky & Five, Frank Warren's branched out and the terrestrial stations have had to make cutbacks financially.
Emotion aside, purely from a fighting point of view, i'm highly dubious he'll have the punch resistance to see off even a mid-level world fighter. I also have doubts about his timing fitness-wise. He seemed eager to look in shape for the press conference months ago, perhaps understandably, but if anything he looks a bit gaunt now. You have to time your training to be in peak condition on the night, not weeks beforehand.
Whatever happens, i hope he's sound long-term. Word is he's cut off ties with his family, who were against his comeback. He talks pretty candidly about wanting to take his own life most days. There's an eerie glazed-over look in his eyes when he's interviewed. It's just pretty sad all round, really.
Anyway, people should read this Guardian piece, even if they don't have an interest in boxing - http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/nov/23/ricky-hatton-vyacheslav-senchenko
Gonna have a tenner on Senshenko.
9/1 to win witihin 5 rounds.
Think Ricky could be on the end of an early KO.
Also fancy Rendell Munroe to surprise Scott Quigg.
What time's the Hatton fight on tonight?
Also Flintoff getting into the ring, it's all a bit silly isn't it?
watching this preamble
i'm not sure fat ricky and boxing ricky are the same people
Got this on a stream...
He looks in great nick. But I don't know what to think about this one. Surely such a long time off can't help? It's not like Senchenko's a total mug either, he won't get any space to adjust.
yeah will be interested
bit scared what might happen for RH though. mentally he's fragile imo.
guy wears a united shirt
capture area
Christ
Ricky did alright for the first few rounds...
But was it ring rust or age that did for him in the end? His fitness looked alright for the first half of the fight but his accuracy seemed way out. But then the second half of the fight he lost control of the ring, didn't really move his head enough and started to get caught. If he had avoided that body punch, he probably would have had a narrow loss on points to a very good fighter, but he still looked a long short of his peak (naturally).
And that was a CRACKING body punch. They're very, very difficult to get up from. Ricky wanted to, but he just couldn't.
Heartbreaking stuff.
For me, it's not a question of whether he should fight again or not (he shouldn't), but more about his future generally. He seems like a broken man. Don't know if i'm being overly dramatic or what not, but i genuinely have serious concerns about the fella's wellbeing.
so true
I actually think he's good. hopefully this defeat will bring him back down to earth. boxers never seem to retire gracefully
He won't quit after that...
Maybe he should quit after that fight tonight and how his shortcomings were exposed, but the manner in which he got beat will give him a false hope that he can still mix it with the best. He can kid himself that "it was a lucky shot" and "I dominated the fight" and he'll end up setting himself up for greater damage.
Hopefully those who know him best and whose word he trusts can protect him from himself.
Ricky Hatton retires from boxing....
Scott Quigg first man ever to stop Munroe
Absolute quality and a masterclass in body punching. Quigg v Frampton will be amazing!
I fancy getting into boxing a bit more
Do any of you itk types have some tips for a n00b? Podcasts/documentaries/books/radio or TV shows etc? Any classic fights on youtube or similar that I could watch?
This might need it’s own thread really.
You want Sky & Box Nation, ideally...
but you can just watch pretty much all fights via here - http://www.wiziwig.tv/competition.php?part=sports&competitionid=69&discipline=other
There's a program called Ringside on Sky Sports, Thursday nights at 6pm. Decent place to start.
See this site for upcoming fights (anything above 4-star's usually worth watching) - http://boxrec.com/date_search.php or this site is good to check when there are big or domestic fights coming up - http://www.oddschecker.com/boxing
The best fighters about at present are Andre Ward, Adrien Broner, Floyd Mayweather, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez & Manny Pacquaio.
Domestically, Carl Froch, Scott Quigg, Carl Frampton, David Price, Nathan Cleverly, Kell Brook, Ricky Burns, Tyson Fury, Matthew Macklin.
Promoters domestically are Matchroom (Eddie & Barry Hearn, Sky), Frank Warren (Box Nation), Hennesey (Channel 5), Hatton Promotions, but there are lots of other smaller promoters that do affordable shows most weekends.
Maybe look into books/articles by Bert Sugar and Kevin Mitchell (the latter writes for the Guardian, i think). Steve Bunce is a comedy character/TV pundit, but writes pretty decent boxing columns.
There are quite a few magazines - Ring, Boxing News, Boxing Monthly, but they're all quite pricey.
I'd recommend to read about the Four Kings (Hagler, Hearns, Duran & Leonard), Sugar Ray Robinson (the greatest fighter ever), obviously Ali, Sonny Liston, Jake LaMotta, Rocky Marciano, Joe Louis, Carlos Monzon.
Great fights include Ali v Frazier, Gatti v Ward, Hagler v Hearns, Morales v Berrera, Corrales v Castillo, Arguello v Pryor, Eubank v Benn.
Maybe read about Michael Watson, Gerard McClelland, Johnny Owen, Irish Billy Colllins. There are lots of sad but interesting stories, really. The Hatton Guardian piece above being another.
Much of what forza said although it's definitely worth getting boxibng monthly
or boxing news to give you an idea as to what's happeing in the workd of boxing and to give you an insight into the characters. For me, boxing has the most interesting charcters in and around it, and even though it's beyond the mob controlled days of the 20s, 30s and 40s, it is still a murky world. A couple of other witers i'd higly recommend are Hugh Millvanney and Budd Schulberg.
Also, the depth of history in the sport and the social and political effect it had, particularly in America is worth reading up on a bit. Unforgivable Blackness is excellent http://www.amazon.co.uk/Unforgivable-Blackness-Rise-Fall-Johnson/dp/0712609776
Also, a good website is sosoboxing.com - usually has fights up to watch the day after they have been aired and also has a number of documentaries.
I'd highly reccommend getting into boxing. It is pretty much the best sport out there once you get into it.
Also, Forza missed David Price off the list of domestic boxers. He would walk all over Tyson Fury.
Also, Forza, you're a Manchester LAD. Have you heard anything about Price Aaron? He was coming along nicely and now seems to have disappeared?
no i didn't
it's right up there where i said it!
Prince Arron never really had the tools to be a top class operator, even at domestic level, never mind beyond, in my opinion. He lost quite convincingly to Brian Rose, and has just moved up to middleweight. I don't think he'll really make inroads at that weight as there are lots of decent domestic fighters - Eubank Jr, Adam Etches, Kerry Hope, then obviously the big hitters - Barker, Macklin, Murray.
Ah, sorry about that. Selective reading.
Didn't see that Brian Rose fight. He's quite handy domestically though. Shame about Prince Aaron as i always fancy a rangy skilled boxer, but if he is pretty one dimensional, then as you say, he won't go anywhere. Think when i saw him he was against some fairly limited opposition so was made to look good.
Cheers for the suggestions you two
Those should keep me busy for a while. It was actually a combination of that Guardian article (cracking read, though heartbreaking stuff post-Saturday) and watching the Thriller in Manilla documentary that has pushed me into finally getting around to watching more Boxing. I used to watch a lot of the big event fights with my Dad (I remember seeing those Eubank v Benn battles as a young 'un) but never got around to getting into it in any more depth.
Thanks again.
Anyone watching Price v Skelton?
Want to, what time is it on?
9:45

Excellent will give it a whril
you're a man in the know, was this a fight Price had to take for some reason? I'd have thought he was past someone like Skelton now, who is a tough old warrior, but isn't anything special.
Not really.
Just the natural fight.
Lots of people say you could stick him in at world level now, and he's got the tools, but he's not got the rounds under his belt. He might have a glass chin for all we know.
Given that, it makes sense to stick him in with someone known for being durable and with plenty of experience. Skelton's perhaps been a bit underrated, he's just boring, generally.
If Price wins this, they'll go for Chisora.
If he wins that, maybe a good European level fighter like Helenius.
Win that, Fury end of next year.
Anything could happen, though.
:D Probably past him now.
But I understand and accept what you were saying.
Dunno.
I still think Chisora, Helenius, Fury's the natural path for him.
I'll go against the grain as well and say i think Fury would be too good for him. We've seen Fury take punches. He loves the brawls. We can't say those things about Price.
As these commentators are saying, though, perhaps it's more likely that either/even both will take the £££s of a world title fight with Wlad or Vitali in Germany beforehand.
price seems like an ok guy
who was the fella calling someone a fag or whatever a month or so ago?
Tyson Fury
He is not a very subtle man
tbf i think he said something along the lines of
."david price and his gay lover" which for a homophobic tirade is actually quite sweet.
I think he'd be silly to fight Fury now, long term the money for both of them is in a fight when they've both got a more developed record
I do think this should have been Chisora or a mid-upper level American.
Interesting what they're saying about fighting Fury in June, seems the wrong time.
Well, Chisora's banned, or else that might've been on.
They could put Fury v Price on at the M.E.N now and earn about £1.5m, or even, at a push, at Eastlands, and double that, so i can see both sides of the argument.
learn the words son, rookie mistake there
Vassell v Heffron?
Only saw the stoppage. No real issue with is, despite him being on his feet.
What else happened (assuming that's the fight you're talking about).
Bit surprised they put Heffron in with Vassell so soon, tbh.
naw
that dopey lad singing ferry across the mersey forgot the words. was a fair stoppage although he looked like he'd probably have survived the standing 8 count if he had gone down.
christ this is crazy
good aggression
but he can't punch :/
he really did look like he had an ok one-two in sparring
got excited the lad
he's just slapping the guy :D
like those old fashioned boxers. put a cigar in his mouth
the other guy isn't trying
oof
that was rough
Christ
That was almost funny. Thank God the other guy was a joker.
Mixed thoughts.
Scored it 10/9, 8/10, 10/9, 10/9.
Flintoff's clearly not a boxer, was very crude, and was fighting an absolute pudding, but hit footwork was actually pretty good, his legs were strong and he recovered well from the knockdown.
In a way, yeah, it devalues boxing a bit. In another, you've got a man there who's had a long, public fight with depression, so fair play, and if it brings a few more people to smaller boxing shows, great.
;-D
Tyson Fury and his opponent doing a Bette Midler duet on the piano ahead of their fight. WTF?
That was easily the highlight of the night.
I've just been searching for a video of it with no luck.
The fight was fucking terrible.
Yes!

idk.
Unlike the commentators, and elements of the crowd, i thought it was a reasonably good fight by heavyweight standards.
I got the impression people assumed Johnson was a mug, a punchbag that Fury should bulldoze through, but nothing could be further from the truth, he'd only lots one proper fight, against Vitali, who he took the distance.
Fury looked in good shape, mixed it up quite well, and got the rounds under his belt against a fairly credible opponent (and one David Price probably wouldn't get in with).
I do have doubts about his natural fitness and concentration, mind. He often lags in the middle of fights, and his mind wanders during spells when he's not being dominant.
Cotto loses
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/writers/bryan_armen_graham/12/02/cotto-trout-fight/index.html
Sad times, he's been one of my favourite boxers of recent years.
woof
knew Pacquiao would lose last night.
think he's been looking for an out for some time now, and there's been a decline in him every fight since Cotto. His heart just ain't in it any more.
Happy for Marquez, though. Some boxing writers say he won all four fights.
* though tbh...
i've probably predicted him to win earlier in the year.
his body language leading up to the fight was off, though, and there were rumours his camp wasn't great. plus lots of respected writers were tipping an upset.
more importantly
he's off the steroids
and allegedly the other lad's taking up the slack in that department allegedly
Really don't think it was an upset though.
I had Marquez winning the first 2 fights and drawing the 3rd. A clearcut Pac Man win would've been more shocking.
Watch Amir Khan win next week and then start crowing about a fight with Pacquiao.
Pacquiao was 1/3.
wish the fight had lasted a bit longer
was shaping up to be a pwopah scrap. Marquez face was a bit of a mess. That punch though.....ooooof.
the interviewer in the ring kept telling Pacquiao to watch the knockout ' we're going to see the knockout now....here it is, here is him knocking you out...what did you think of that punch?' Pacquiao just looked dazed and dejected, should of told him to go fuck himself
Some good fights tonight...
BoxNation card including Frank Buglioni, Liam Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, then George Groves v Glen Johnon. Groves is never going to stop Johnson, but he might've caught him at the right time for a wide points victory, though he has been quite inactive.
Then Amir Khan v Carlos Molina on Sky. Gonna be about a 4:30am start for the main event itself. A very tough fight for Khan, especially travelling. His new trainer, Virgil Hunter, seems like quite a canny guy, though. If Khan can keep to his gameplan, he should be too big for Molina. If he doesn't, he could quite easily get sparked out again.
Alfred Angulo, and 100% knockout specialist Deontay Wilder are both on that undercard, around the same time on BoxNation there's Donaire v Arce, which could be a right tear-up.
Molina is as long as 8/1 in some places
worth a tenner considering Khan's chin.
Not very powerful even at lightweight though...
7 KO's from 17 victories is it?
I know Khan's chinny as fuck but I think he'll win easily if he applies the slightest bit of brain power.
A Khan win by MD, I reckon
He won't be as reckless as he was against Garcia
Khan did very well.
I've always thought his main problem is more a lack of focus, rather than simply having a glass chin. His hand speed is outstanding, if he keeps his concentration levels to the standard of last night he'll be a major contender again. Virgil Hunter seemed to be on his case during every round and perhaps that's what he needs.
Agree that he boxed very well...
but they obviously matched him very carefully against a much smaller opponent who didn't have much punch power. That's fair enough, imho, but he shouldn't be calling Garcia out again. Garcia in there last night would've stopped him again. Molina tagged him repeatedly over the first 4-5 rounds, and had he a bit more power Khan would've been in trouble.
