five minutes in and it's probably the grimmest thing I've watched in years.
not sleeping tonight.
i feel like retching.
I watched all of that, and felt fucking horrible after, even though I've studied the topic and read a lot into it. It's disgusting how little media and political reaction this got at the time. I believe the government were happy to see the genocide take place at the ridiculous pace it did.
will have to root it out.
It implicated the heads of government in authorising the killings, and showed videos of people getting executed and starved. Showed the tamil leader's brain being picked at by people too, and the body of his 12-year-old son riddled with bullets...just..ugh...
How is there no more international reaction to this?
I meant i believe the British government, or at least many of the west were happy to let a foreseeable genocide take place so quickly i.e the issue 'resolved' before an international campaign could take place forcing the government into action it didn't want to take.
Although the only one I can find on 4OD is the one first broadcast last year
dunno why it's not on 4od tho.
Cheers, will watch it later
There are always issues the British and US government have been critical of, and yet done nothing about, including this.
I'm sure there are hundreds of thousands* of Tamil's thankful of the British government's 'condemnation' of what the Sri Lankan army was doing to it's own people.
*probably just a thousand now
Well, we've sent our cricket team there - give 'em a sound thrashing, that'll show 'em
that if England does win, it'll be because SL's one Tamil player has retired
was a completely political move. He supported the crushing of the Tamils. SO so wrong.
'obviously the media takes the Sinhalese viewpoint'.
I understand they didn't want to get into a new conflict and that was my point, that the British were happy to see an international conflict 'resolved' so quickly. Rather than them being forced into action. But that action doesn't always have to mean war, and the West made very little effort at resolving this genocide by other means.
because I didn't want to be needlessly upset some more.
and because it is pointless to pick over the bones now.
There was a time to do stuff and that was when it was happening.
When there were news clips of civilians trapped and frightened that they were about to be killed by the gov forces attacking.
It was certainly known what was happening at the time.
Sri Lankans were appealing for other countries to stop the sri lankan governments attacks.
Other Countries DID NOT stop the Sri Lankan government forces attacking
THAT IS WHY this was worse than it needed to be.
if you need to know what could have been done to avoid it, it is simple.
OTHER COUNTRIES GOVS SHOULD HAVE MADE THE SRI LANKAN GOV
to stop the attacks.
Its a horrible business, and Im sorry to be so cocksure, but there were people on the tv, at the time of it happening, pleading for other countries to do something.
the UN could too.
Other countries can unilaterally say to the sri lankan politicians that if they did not stop the attacks to allow non combatants to leave that this would be regarded as a war crime and that the individual politicians would be held responsible and subject to capture.
There are many things that countries govs could do.
but they didnt do enough.
