Clare's Law
I have a couple of questions about the scheme.
Say Jane starts going out with John, but John has a conviction for domestic violence in a previous relationship. As I understand, under the scheme, the Police would be able to inform Jane that John has such a history.
But...
1) How do the police know who John is going out with?
2) Does a 'domestic abuser register' exist in a similar format to the sex offender's register?
heard this discussed on the radio this morning
from what i could gather Jane can only find out if John has previous convictions is if she goes to the police to report him for domestic abuse, only then can/will the police inform her if John has any previous.
so
how is different from the current situation?
If Jane went to the police to tell them about domestic abuse from John, and John's been previously convicted of domestic abuse, you'd think that at the very least, the police would act straight away on that, and you'd hope they'd tell Jane why.
So what's really changing?
don't know pal
they interviewed Clare's dad on 5live breakfast this morning and I was only half listening.

I can't answer 1) but can have a stab at 2) and do have further questions
I'm reasonably certain no domestic abuse register exists. There's just people who have convictions for domestic violence. Whilst I've no particular desire to stand up for the rights of people with convictions for domestic violence, is it ethical to start keeping track/tabs/reporting to the public about someone's conviction if that wasn't part of the sentence the judge imposed?
This does seem the most well-intentioned but utterly impractical law I've heard of for quite some time.
I agree it is well intentioned
I just don't see how it's going to help the current situation, or more specifically, how it is any different to the current situation (not that I know much about the current situation, in all fairness).
Because, when I first heard about it, it sounded like you could meet someone on Monday, go for a drink on Tuesday, and go ask the police on Wednesday whether he has a conviction for domestic violence, with no grounds to do so whatsoever. If that's true, it's dangerous territory, if you ask me.
Can you still chill on Sunday?
yeah, cuz you'll be in the COOLER
boom
so to answer the questions:
1. they don't
2. don't think so
