THE NFL OFFSEASON THREAD (Brought to you by Peyton Manning's Sunshine Tanning)
First offseason event, the Combine, now on in Indianapolis.
http://www.nfl.com/combine/live?module=HP11_traffic_driver
Yesterday was the offensive linemen's turn, and it was both hilarious to watch 350lbs men running and jumping, then amazing to see them clock 5.5 secs 40 yard dashes and 9 feet standing jumps. Looks like Matt Kalil of USC cemented his place as the best Tackle prospect, and will probably go in the top 5 and probably to the Vikings.
Today is the turn of the QBs, WRs and RBs. Just saw Robert Griffin III of Baylor run 4.41 which is an incredible time. Luck from Stanford, no.1 QB prospect and Tannehill for Texas A&M, no.3, are also out there today.
This is an interesting article on the QBs which have been included here to just throw during the WR drills. TJ Yates with the Texans is someone who did this last year and subsequently got drafted.

The other big news is Peyton Manning. Biggest offseason story probably - he's gonna retire, stay with the Colts, or move to the Chiefs/Dolphins/Jets depending on who you listen to.
His arm has been described as a 'noodle' by one journalist so it remains to be seen if he can play again. If he returns, it's not with the Colts probably. Dolphins fans have already put up a billboard in Miami with him in a #18 Dolphins jersey, but I don't think it's a good move for us. I just don't believe he'll be the same QB, although letting the Jets take him is a huge risk if he turns out to be the same guy. Manning in the AFC East with two Brady games a year would be good for the league though.
News, gossip, team expectations etc...

Really hope Manning isn't done yet
The league would definitely be worse off without him. There's not really much chance in the Colts bringing in Luck and keeping Peyton as the cap hit of having both of them would be huge. Hopefully they'll cut him and lower the risk of Miami having to risk a lot on him, could definitely see him linking up well with Brandon Marshall
The real story of this offseason (for me anyway) is Mike Wallaces contract issues
Its one of these ridiculously complicated Restricted Free Agent things where he's still technically under contract with the Steelers but if another team matches or improves his tender he can sign with them in return for their 1st round picks (which he's obviously worth). Pittsburgh can't afford to offer him a new deal without cutting a lot of other players and can't really afford to Franchise Tag him either so in theory a rival like Baltimore or N.E could come in a take him from us, both of whom are in dire need or a stretch the field wideout like Wallace
I'm afraid, very afraid
aye we'll have him
no bother ;)
I would actually cry if I saw Wallace in a Ravens jersey
he's been my favourite offensive player since he arrived and the jersey I was gonna buy when the new Nike ones come in this year.
If St Louis come in for him at least we'd have the #2 pick but its unlikely they'd give that up for him. The most likely options are Baltimore, New England and San Francisco and we'd much rather ship him out to the NFC West than divisional or conference rivals
If I were Mike Wallace
I would tell St.Louis to get to fuck regardless what money they offered :P
Really hope the Vikings draft Kalil.
He looks an absolute beast and LT is a huge need.
Luck ran a 4.59(?) 40 yesterday, that's as fast as Cam Newton. For a guy who's supposed to be the best pocket-passer prospect since Peyton. Unreal.
Robert Griffin III ran a 4.41 which for a 6'2'' 225lbs QB is beastly
I could easily see St Louis tempted by him at #2 and then shipping off Sam Bradford who will still have high trade value with Miami or Washington
I've not seen much of Griffin, but apparently his deep ball is brilliant too.
Could have a Cam-like impact for someone. I don't know what the Vikes would do if he dropped to them. They're desperate for OL help and drafted a 1st round QB last year but RG3 sounds like a huge upgrade. Intriguing.
I'd like to see Manning at the Redskins
With or without Manning
The Colts have got a hell of a job to do, and look at them making exactly the same mistake by waiting out on Luck for the draft, again placing all their hope that one guy will drag the team out of mediocrity.
Even when Brady was crocked and Cassell had to step in for the Pats. they managed to turn the situation round after a while, the Colts just seem to give up, it's embarrasing.
there is a wierd degree of arrogance behind it
I hope they fail spectacularly, but then I've always hated the Colts
Agreed
Although part of the issue for them this year is that Peyton aside they're also gonna lose Jeff Saturday and prob Reggie Wayne. Those are probably the 3 names I'll remember in 10 years looking back on that Colts team (Marvin Harrison too obvs)
Peyton Manning released, apparently.
Inevitable, but still a shock.
Meanwhile, just as last season I pin my allegiances firmly to the Saints (bought a Jimmy Graham jersey and everything), they get caught in a hugh shit-storm of paying defenders to injure opponents. The league will come down hard, and whilst I think we'll be alright next season, the future doesnt look great.
Drew Brees reportedly rejected HUGE money to stay with us. Although he won't be going anywhere even if a contract isn't sorted, thanks to the good ole' franchise tag, the fact he seems to be demanding huge money and denting the salry cap destroys the 'team player' reputation he earned for himself.
Colston will most likely be moving on in free-agency, and with the league set to take away draft picks for a couple of years to come it will be hard to replace him with a young talent. Makes winning the big-one in the Superdome next year even more pivotal- could be the last trophy in a while.
Hopefully we'll sort ourselves out, as the club is run by sound owners and has a great set-up, but thinks aren't looking as rosy as before.
Gregg Williams seems like an absolute c**t. Never mind all of this bounty crap, he also refers *TO HIMSELF* as 'Dr. Heat'. Cock. Glad we're rid of him.
COMBINE NEWS!
- RG3 proves he's more than just a great pair of socks, but is infact one the coolest people alive, and can run seriously fast.
-Nose tackle Dontari Poe (who?) bench presses about 600 times his own weight 600 times, and will surely jump up a round and dissapoint someone next year when they realise he isnt actually Haloti Ngata.
-Alshon Jeffrey decides he doesn't want to stake his claim as the second-best WR in this years draft, so doesnt do any combine tests. Great decision making pal. Michael Floyd's stock rises.
-Vontaze Burfict (this fella: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvcsffTQojI ) suprises nobody and proves he's a massive arsehole. Will almost certainly end up with the Ravens, or given current developments- anywhere with Gregg Williams.
WHY CAN'T THE SEASON START SOONER????
So many spelling mistakes in there.
Hugh shit storm? Thinks aren't looking as rosy as before?
Sorry guys, it's late.
Hello, I'm Hugh Shitstorm.
I think Brees-us deserves massive money personally. He's one of the best of all time IMO. Is he really asking for that much?
Supposedly he turned down a contract that would have made him the highest-paid player
in the NFL. Not sure how much truth is in that though.
He deserves a hell of a lot, sure, and he'll get a hell of a lot too. He pretty much IS the New Orleans Saints- i mean, they have his head on a Mardi Gras float. But the amounts he's purportedly asking for could put a huge dent in the pay-roll and mean worse players in other parts of the team. Hopefully gets sorted soon though, next year is a big one.
apparently the Saints has been trialing Randy Moss too
because if there's anything the Saints need, its definitely receivers.
Where do people think Randy Moss is gonna end up?
He supposedly impressed in his trial at New Orleans; everyone's saying he's 'Old Randy' although this could be taken two ways.
I think the Saints may be stringing him a long a bit just to show Colston that they have other options if they do try to re-sign him. I kind of hope he ends up back in New England; he's obviously a good fit there and it might make Belichick leave Mike Wallace alone (the only thing I really care about this off-season)
You think Wallace is gonna go?
And out of interest, why haven't they franchise tagged him? Dpn't have too much Steeler's off-season knowledge tbh.
We literally don't have the cap space to pay the franchise tag
I think the WR franchise tender is about $9.5 million this year and whilst we've cut a lot of big names already (Hines Ward being the biggest) we're still barely under the cap limit as it is and we still have future draft picks to sign.
The Steelers are gonna have to risk Wallace being a restricted Free Agent and just hope teams like S.F, N.E and Baltimore aren't willing to give up their first round picks to steal him from us. If we can hold on to him this year we can give him a proper deal next season and he should hopefully retire a Steeler; at the moment its all up in the air
Jets
We have a thing for old past it receivers.
Manning then
Where's he going? Miami or Tennessee for me.
I think he'd be good in Miami.
Imagine Manning throwing to Brandon Marshall :O
However, the fact they've bought Philbin makes me think they're going after Matt Flynn.
i'm gonna take an outside shot at Seattle
I can definitely see them throwing the most money at him, I think Miami will be more interested in Flynn and S.F will stick with Alex Smith
If the 49ers went in for him after the season they just had
it would be inexplicably harsh. Harbaugh has clearly put a lot of faith in Smith, and whilst his stats aren't incredible he still took them to an NFC Championship game, and lost to the eventual winners. He'll be rewarded with at least another year, and with a better wide-receiever set they could easily get to the Superbowl. I'm not even sure why pundits are throwing them in the mix.
Seattle is a good call though. Can definitely see that working for both parties.
Won't play in NFC
means there'd be no chance of a Manning on Manning superbowl. You think he'd want to knock his little brother out in the playoffs.
*you think he'd want to knock his little brother out in the playoffs? No way
apparently Denver have approached him :D
I knew Elway still hates Tebow!
he was fooling no-one
Any of you guys watch much College football?
Any sleeper people in the draft you think we should be looking out for?
I watched a fair bit last year as I had ESPN for the first time ever, but I only ever really focused on RG3, Luck, Blackmon, Richardson and the obvious guys.
Who do you want your team to draft? Saints don't have a first round pick this year, and I don't know enough about the second round prospects to say, although we'll probably lose that pick anyway after Bountygate.
I watch some but I kinda cant get a grasp on it
its too big!
Only really watch the college game myself
Gotta love ESPN America. The NFL has never appealed to me or held my interest much.
As for sleeper draft prospects, I'm an Oregon fan so I'm biased, but it's what I know most I guess... any team with needs in the offensive line, particularly in the immediate term, would do themselves a big favour to draft Mark Asper: great at both guard and tackle, very athletic for an lineman and has a good head on his shoulders. Some knock him because of his age (27, started college late after a religious mission), so maybe you'll get a couple less years out of him, but he could definitely go in and start from game one in either position.
Hope someone will pick up Darron Thomas, but all I hear is that he's not made for NFL styles, and there are so many QBs in this draft. Though if Denver don't go for Manning, who knows, they carry on with Tebow on the spread-option and DT could be the ideal back up! Similar knocks with LaMichael James not being NFL appropriate, though that's mostly a size issue NFL types bring up, but with his ridiculous agility someone's got to want him Minimum for kick returns, and as a situation back for downs like 3rd and short too he'd do well. At least.
Oregon's jerseys are pretty incredible.
Watched a few of your games last year. Haven't heard of Asper, though i've probably unkowingly watched him. The average career of NFL offensive lineman is around 5 years I'm sure I've read somewhere, so the age shouldnt be too much of a problem. If he started college late he's still taken the same hits and wear-and-tear as most 23 year old OL's- so will still be worth a pick up- I'll keep an eye out.
Same applies to Brandon Weeden I guess- who although 28, I reckon could do pretty well steadying a struggling team like the Browns.
I guess that the o-line isn't really the unit you pay most attention to
especially when you're watching such a fast-paced and exciting offence like Oregon.
Yeah, gotta love our jerseys- this is what you get when the founder of Nike is a proud alumni who showers you with all his company's latest lines as well as being overall pretty much the ultimate booster. And those wing details that are on the shoulders of most of the current jerseys are almost too beautiful to be part of a sports uniform.
Yikes
Shit went down last night.
Redskins paid an absolute ransom to move up the the 2nd overall pick, meaning they're gonna take RGIII. Their first round picks for the next three years, and this year's second rounder. Boy, you gotta hope they've got it right here, or Mike Shanahan isn't going to be able to afford the bills for his sunbed before the year's out. Not sure how many draft picks they now have left, but they apparently have around $50million of cap space and with Daniel Snyder calling the shots, expect them to be the market makers in free agency.
The Rams are sitting pretty, but the move down to 6 suggests they maybe aren't so hot on WR Justin Blackmon, reckon he'll be going to Cleveland now.
In other news, the New York Jets, in a move which has completely baffled me, have extended Mark Sanchez's contract for 5 years. S'probably to free up cap space and make him look less of a lame duck to the rest of the team, but he's now earning more than Eli Manning and Aaron Rodgers even if he doesn't meet the incentives. Mike Tannenbaum is increasingly looking like an idiot. We need to ship RT Wayne Hunter asap, but he got extended too and no-one wants him because he is terrible. And then there's the whole Bart Scott fiasco. The whole Sanchez deal is just absolutely baffling, the contract is mostly up front cash and the incentives aren't huge, judging by reports. Seriously damages our possibility of getting a good back up in to challenge him. However, if this is the kick up the arse/show of faith he needs to perform next year then I'll happily eat my words come next february.
Elsewhere, Peyton Manning is going to Denver to back up Tebow, just as soon as John Fox can assess how much of the option offense he remembers from college 20 years ago. (In all seriousness, Peyton is Miami's to lose. Kansas City and Tennessee are also in the hunt I reckon. Don't buy him going to Arizona or Seattle)
its an insane amount to give up just to move up a few places in the draft
I reckon people will be talking about this deal for a long time; the way they still talk about the Herschel Walker trade. If RGIII lives up to his potential then it will be worth it but he'll need to impress straight away - He'll basically be under the microscope more than Luck as he's effectively worth more now.
Conversely St Louis may have just created problems for themselves in the future. They're gonna have 5 1st round picks in 3 years; assuming that Washington and St Louis continue to finish with similar records as they do now then those picks are gonna be high meaning its gonna be expensive to sign all those players. I wouldn't be suprised to see them give up a bit of what they've just taken off Washington to try and get Blackmon, I could see Minnesota moving down a few spots for the right price. If they keep all 5 picks then it puts enormous pressure on Bradford to have a great year, they must have considered taking RGIII if the right offer hadn't come in so it stands to reason that they'll consider replacing him next off-season with 2 first rounders in the 2013 draft.
Seeing as Jeff Ireland is STILL our GM
I'm betting that Manning isn't coming to Miami. Ireland is about as classy and charming as a 6ft tall sewer rat. He's the man who asked Dez Bryant if his mother was a prostitute. In the past few years, we've missed out on coaches (Jim Harbaugh, Jeff Fisher) and players (frankly too many to name) and it's because of his mismanagement of the team. Manning will go elsewhere and we'll get another season of Matt Moore, I feel it in my bones.
As for Washington, they've made some bad trades of late but I like this one actually. Griffin is a franchise QB and they've got a lot of other skill positions sorted. It was time to go big and get the QB they need.
The fallout from Gregg Williams is interesting. The Saints certainly don't look like the Nation's Team now they paid their players to dislocate opponent's shoulders.
yeah I think this could work out well for Washington
I hope so, its a crime they've been out of the game so long
Some interesting rumours suggesting Houston are weighing up a Manning bid
They badly need WR help though
And their O-line really isn't great, even with Trent Williams.
I guess moving up for Griffin sends a message to free agents that they're serious. VJax to DC?
Apparently Denver are very close to signing Peyton and trading Tebow
Incredible scenes :D
FREE AGENCY!!!
Brandon Marshall traded to Da Bearz!
What. the. fuck.
Miami's gotta have something big up its sleeve.
Also, two third round draft picks? That's pretty much daylight robbery.
V-Jax maybe? Or Colston?
It's a strange one, seems like great business for Chicago.
Yeah, he's at least as good as V-Jax and the same age
He made Revis look human last year. Can't say that about many receivers.
Colston's locked up with the Saints. Meachem's hit the market though.
Pierre Garcon to the Redskins
Brandon Carr supposedly going to the Cowboys. They definitely need to shore up that secondary.
:D
Me a couple of nights ago:
"Oh might as well check out NFL.com and see what the news is on Peyton...which Marshall would go to Chicago?......
....
http://tinyurl.com/7fl7jzl"
Scene.
We're turning into the laughing stocks of the league. Manning is going to either Tennessee or Denver now and we have absolutely zilch to show for a top 5 receiver. Two THIRD ROUND draft picks. Holy Dan Marino we're fucked.
Mario Williams goes to Buffalo
odd move, can only imagine they threw everything but the kitchen sink at him.
Jets, can we sign a GOOD right tackle, stat? Otherwise he's going to eat Sanchez for breakfast
Aaron Rodgers on twitter
"Congrats to Mario Williams signing in buffalo... far away from the NFC north, thanks big guy"
Oh god.
I'm happy with the Dolphins O-line
but that's a scary opponent for next year. I'm of the opinion that in free agency you see teams throw money around on players in desperation, and that it's a risky business. But Williams is a good grab by the Bills, Dolphins need to get going with a plan if we're not going to finish last in AFC East.
Seeing Peyton in a different jersey might be weirder than seeing McNabb in a 'Skins jersey
http://blogs.nfl.com/2012/03/14/trading-cards-give-glimpse-of-peyton-mannings-future/?module=HP11_hot_topics
Matt Flynn's going to Seattle
Sorry, powerfulmellow and other Dolphins fans, but I just have to laugh at this....
You trade away the best receiver in the division, you go all in for Peyton and miss, and now you even miss on Flynn. Gotta hope there's a plan somewhere in there.
On the plus side, since the 49ers got linked with Peyton (scary scary shit for the rest of the league), Alex Smith visited you today, so it won't all be bad, hey? Oh, right. Yeah, it will.
Apparently Miami also looking at David Garrard
The laughter is slowly fading into actual sympathy. No fan should have to go through this...
Still, Jets'll trade you Mark Brunell? He's old enough for South Beach...
Garrard isn;t that bad
but yeah, Peyton as a 49er would be NUTS
Reports saying Flynn to the Seahawks.
Looking very likely that Manning is going to SF now, and he'll have Manningham from the Giants and a returning Randy Moss to throw to. Along with Frank Gore and Vernon Davis, they have to be the Superbowl favourites now.
Because of that, Alex Smith has come out to Miami for an interview. All things considered - those "things" being Jeff Ireland being as charming and persuasive as a punch in the stomach - he wouldn't be so bad for Miami. He and Moore could battle it out for the starter's position. What we need is to pick up some wide threat
Haha
Posted this after leaving the laptop for a while.
I see everyone's already had a laugh about it. You heartless bastards. You all had bad times too! The Jets used to pay Kellen Clemens to play for them.
Ok, in conclusion
whatever Miami are planning, it is now a Plan C or D. We cannot claim this is going to plan, because even though Manning made it clear that the Dolphins didn't stand much of a chance, Flynn was always considered a certain fall-back. That means we traded Marshall and looked to the draft with those two guys in mind.
The QB wishlist is 2 guys shorter now: at the moment, Alex Smith is No. 1, but depending on where Manning goes that could change. Hasselbeck is at Tennessee and - whisper it - Tebow could come back to Florida from Denver. In the case of the latter, it would energise the fans but be awful for our football.
That leaves Matt Moore. He can't be feeling too confident with the Dolphins scrabbling around. Rumours are even going round that Favre might get a call from us...
I still have no idea what you thought you were doing with Marshall
even if he sucker punched some woman outside a club as reported, he genuinely seemed to finally be happy at Miami and last season he played lights out. Maybe it was Jeff Ireland's daughter who he beat up?
it appears it will be Manning to Denver
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/03/19/manning-to-quarterback-broncos-barring-unexpected-snag/related/
so, let's just kick this off right now, Tebow's going back to Florida ain't he?
Kind of has to be I guess
bit of a shotgun marriage though, the QB no-one likes going to the team no-one wants to play for; can't see it going too well for either party
well, Floridians still adore him
do you not remember "Gator tribute day" last year?
as has been pointed out;
if Tebow goes to South Beach he's going to lose his virginity and his purity. I give it three years before he's arrested for driving under the influence of cocaine while being serviced by a hooker.
make that 18 months
Yeah, Florida still loves Tebow.
We got our biggest attendance last year when Denver came to play. Smith will probably stay at the 49ers and nurse his hurt pride.
Can't see this working out at all though. It means Philbin may as well have stayed at Green Bay and we could have hired a Full Backs coach. I feel like crying at the state of our team. Everyone's saying Bess and Hartline are due breakout seasons, but they only looked decent last year with Marshall double-teamed.
As for the Marshall question - I have no idea why we've traded him, because it turns out the allegations against him were not even a factor in that decision. Two third-round picks are nothing for him.
:'( I think Jeff Ireland is the Max Bialystock of the NFL.
ffs, AFC North are even taking shots at us

:DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
fantastic :D
Garrard to the Dolphins
A man that the Jacksonville Jaguars cut last year because he was out of shape. That's the Jacksonville Jaguars. Cut him. The Jaguars.
Can we please just go with Matt Moore and forget this whole offseason ever happened?
:D Miami
:')
Cant wait for the Marlins' spectacular failure too
does this mean Tebow to Jax?
mm nfl.com suggests Bills
A.J Adande on around the horn reckoned Minnesota
Doubt it
I think Jacksonville aren't interested - they just signed Miami's last bust Chad Henne as competition for Gabbert and, for some reason, think that's enough for them. He's gonna REALLY struggle now Tebow. He should look for a good team looking for a 3rd string QB who can come in on Wildcat formations. He's simply not gonna get the situation he had in Denver next season.
As for Miami, I think the plan will be now to draft a rookie QB in the draft. I'm not sure we'd take Tannehill, because our 1st round pick is going on a O-lineman I think. In that case we have a young, medium and old QB in the depth chart and some semblance of normality.
why do you need another qb?
you just signed a bro with crohns disease!
well...your QB has a stupid moustache!
as for this \/ point, i don't think Tebow should rule it out.
he's shaved it off
surely the answer if, your QB is Joe Flacco whenever talking to me
oh no!
i imagine the shave went something like this:
http://stalinsmoustache.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/samson-281.jpg
mmmmm
apparently New England are interested in signing him not as a QB!
he should go there and play whatever position Belichick wants
frankly he still owes Josh McDaniels big for drafting him in the first round when no other team was interested in him.
My 2 cents on the problems at Miami.
The problem we have is based in the front-office and the management team. Firstly, coach Philbin. I think, honestly, players are worried joining a team where the head coach is understandably still grieving. I think it says a lot that Matt Flynn, a player Philbin brought up through his first years in pro football, felt that he wasn't comfortable at Miami. If I had the choice of Pete Carroll or Philbin right now, I'd go with the former because he's a recognised "players' coach" and one who could have success at Seattle. As for the players we already have, I'm sure Philbin can gather them together for the cause. I think it's in attracting new players where he's something of an obstacle.
He pales in comparison, though, to Jeff Ireland. As a GM he's awful. I think what he asked Dez Bryant about his mother was racially tinged and has affected his standing in the league. There's few black players who would want to play for a man who asked another black player if his mother was a prostitute. It was insensitive and idiotic, and I think, again absolutely understandably, it has made players not want to come here and play for him. Why Garrard came is because no one else was asking him. Last year, he turned down our offer to go to Oakland, but an injury made them withdraw their interest.
Our owner is the last problem, but he has the power to fire Ireland. He won't, because apparently they're good friends, and his overall management of the team has been appalling. He's competing with the Heat for South Florida's sports market, and he's trying to combat Lebron's appeal with bringing on Miami celebrities to own the team. It's a cheap showbiz-like trick and it makes us look more like the Harlem Globetrotters than a professional team.
All in all, we're screwed until Ireland goes.
Hines Ward retiring
aw thats a shame
but understandable, he looked thoroughly knacked all the time last year. Does this effect Mike Wallace in any way?
My all time favourite player by some distance
I'll admit I was welling up watching that press conference.
He deserves to be in Canton for this alone:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfM6VLqh95M
If he'd done it to Ray Lewis, he'd have my respect
Ed Reed's a safety. And a ballhawking safety at that.
Remember this?
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d80bc199e/WK-7-Keith-Rivers-injury
Great days.
both of those would be fines now
Wow
Sean Payton suspended for the whole of the 2012 season. Rams looking for a new DC after Gregg Williams suspended indefinitely. That's a huge punishment, I don't know what the Saints will do. I agree with the decision though, it'll be the last time that any team goes out on the field trying to end careers. The knock-on effect is that Brees may look to move elsewhere if he doesn't have his coach there all year.
Oh yeah and Tim Tebow's gone to the Jets.
They've also been fined $500,000 and lost their 2012 & 2013 2nd round picks
That's huge! Roger Goodell will do well to stay out of New Orleans for a while. Still I agree the punishments had to be harsh just to be consistent with the fines they've been handing out to players.
The Tebow deal shows what the rest of the league really thinks of him, a fourth and a sixth round pick for Tebow is a really low evaluation for a player considered a sure-fire starter a couple of weeks ago, and I guess other teams must have offered even less if any were interested at all. The Jets signed him purely to light a fire under Sanchez who's been way too comfortable as the starter there.
Woooooah.
Not good for the Saints :(
Brees hasn't signed his tender yet, Peyton out for a year, no draft picks in the first two rounds this year and the NFL haven't even announced the player punishments yet. Bad bad bad times ahead.
Tebow at the Jets is pretty funny. The Jet's receivers now have Tebow and Sanchez throwing to them. They can't be too happy can they?
Demeco Ryans becomes the latest addition to 'the Dream Team'
Philly swap 3rd round picks and give a 4th to maybe solve their LB problem.
Alex Smith re-signs with the Niners, financial terms have not been disclosed but seeing as they offered him 3 years for $24 million a coiuple of weeks ago it would interesting to see if that number went up after they tried to sign Peyton.
Miami fans are wearing grocery bags before the season even starts as they protest Jeff Ireland generally being a belm: http://www.nflgridirongab.com/2012/03/20/dolphins-fans-stage-protest-after-not-landing-manning/
The last couple of bits of news
make me glad at least I'm not a Saints or Jets fan (sorry Saints and Jets fans). The latter is gonna have Tim Tebow starting by game 6/7 - that is just going to happen. Once Sanchez does one thing wrong the calls for Tebow will start and they'll be left with a godawful passer running the team. As for the Saints, they're well and truly fucked. Arise Cam Newton and the Panthers.
Does anyone know if Tebow can play free safety?
I can only assume that's why we're signing him.
Haha, Cromartie's already said it's a mistake
so I'm not sure he's welcome in the secondary.
TRADE CANCELLED!
Possibly.
Apparently Jets front office didn't read the contract properly and are kicking up a stink about a clause which means they owe Denver $5m. Can our management do ANYTHING right? We're worse than the Redskins and Miami judging by the poor decisions they made last offseason and now seem determined to make again...
Tebow...New York...
something has to break :D
seriously I love everything about this trade
joe namath is pissed: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d827c66a6/article/namath-on-jets-i-think-its-just-a-publicity-stunt?module=HP11_hot_topics
Mark Sanchez either feels awful or is in hysterics, Cromatie hates him
TEBOW TURNED DOWN JACKSONVILLE GUYS :D oh man so funny
I actually like this trade now I've got over the shock
I think it potentially gives Sanchez a kick up the arse and stops him feeling overly comfortable. Plus I like Tebow and always have done. He's got game, which is something our locker room needs. Plus he will definitely help our running game, and fills two needs in some senses: backup QB/wildcat and run support for Shonn Greene/short yardage situations. I trust Sparano and Rex to use him right. And I like that he actually choose to come.
Joe Namath's mouth has always been too big. He's a legend, but he needs to shut up and remember his place sometimes.
I can see where Namath is coming from though,
the media hype around Tebow is so much bigger than what he actually adds to a team I totally get why he thinks its a publicity stunt.
I'm also not a fan of the wildcat offense, I always thought it was gimmicky and the better defenses caught on to it pretty quickly. Same goes for running the option packages, there's just so little room for it against NFL quality defenses. I agree that Sanchez needs to be put under pressure but if I was in charge of the Jets I'd be looking for another QB that fits into that system rather than one who completely changes the offense.
See, I like smashmouth football
And this acquisition tells me that's what the Jets are going to go back to next year. Ground and pound baby. Why mess with the formula?
I like ground and pound offenses too
but if you were gonna beef up the run game I would have rather added a heavy hitting RB (like Tolbert)and a QB who can manage the game better than Sanchez (maybe Leftwich or Garrard) just to put him under pressure, and TBH Drew Stanton could have done that.
The problem with getting Tebow is when Sanchez doesn't win your first couple of games, everyone at the Meadowlands is calling for him to start. Then you'll be in the same situation that Elway was in where you basically have to hand Tebow the keys to your offense and hope he continues to win despite not being a very good QB.
I don't think QB by committee ever works out very well so mixing packages with both Sanchez and Tebow is a bad idea
True.
But Rex is big enough to withstand the pressure. I can really see him using Tebow as a running back. Maybe we'll line up in a 2 QB offense with Tebow as a halfback/quarterback. Can definitely see Sparano doing that.
That I would love to see
First ever playbook designed exclusively around flea flickers and double end arounds.
My two favourite (and the most entertaining) individual plays.
Big fan of the fumble-rooskie myself
I agree with this.
Elway was practically forced into playing Tebow against his wishes. You can see how happy he is to have Manning, someone he considers an ACTUAL quarterback. I think this doesn't force Sanchez to play better as much as signals the end of his time at New York.
Sparano is the biggest proponent of the Wildcat formation so maybe he has an idea for Tebow to fit in. I just don't see how they think bringing Tebow in is going to calm a dressing room that last season had too much drama within it.
I hadn't even thought of that last bit
the last thing the Jets need is a polarising figure like Tebow in the dressing room.
It will make for good TV if HBO do Hard Knocks with the Jets again, Sanchez and Tebow are kind of polar opposites. One's a broadway player who supposedly beds just about any woman he wants, the other is the supposed bible loving virgin: force them to share a room during training camp and you've got yourself a sitcom
Agree that wildcat and option aren't long term strategies
But they do create headaches when involved in playbooks.
"Same goes for running the option packages, there's just so little room for it against NFL quality defenses" - did you watch the Broncos last year?
I almost hope that we're this year's version of the 49ers, playing to our strengths rather than trying to play everyone else's game.
I did watch the Bronco's last year
and when they were effective all I could think of was when Miami first started running the Wildcat and people talked about them like they'd revolutionised the game, eventually people caught on and it stopped being effective.
The only team I think will have continued success running these packages are the Panthers and that's because Cam can pretty much do it all so it becomes much harder to account for the different ways he can beat you. I still don't believe Tebow can beat a team with his arm, people will talk about his stats against Pittsburgh but that was a heavily injured Steelers Defense and Ike Taylor played worse than I've ever seen him play.
Bears pick up Michael Bush, Forte throws his toys out the pram
he's being disrespected to the tune of $7.74 million, it's a disgrace
I was hoping the Steelers were gonna make a move for Bush
He'll do well with the Bears though, a good between the tackles runner and a steal at 4 years for $14 million.
Forte is one of the few cases where I'd actually support a hold-out. The guy accounted for something like 60% of their offensive yards before he got hurt last year and only got paid half a million. Franchise tag money is obviously nice but as a RB your career can end in one hit so he deserves a long term deal
It's a tough one with Forte
No doubt he is a really good player and I'd like to see him given a decent contract, but I think his stats are skewed a bit by our passing game being so abysmal and having resulting to running it so much more.
Having at least one decent WR this year, as well as the coaching changes, should make a big difference to how we play and I don't think whoever our RB is will have anything like the same opportunities to make an impact as before.
Dunno, 4.9 yards a carry is pretty good going when every defence knows you're going to run it.
true, absolutely not doubting he's very good
but feel a lot more comfortable now if we had to fall back on Bush rather than Barber and hoping that we won't be relying so heavily on one player so much next season
What we should be doing is asking
HOW DOES IT AFFECT HIS FANTASY VALUE? God I can't wait for fantasy football to start again.
this was quite a prominant feature in the news reports yesterday
Bush & Forte's values have both gone down
Ravens sign Corey Graham
http://blogs.baltimoreravens.com/2012/03/23/reports-ravens-land-special-teams-ace-graham/
Don't really know him, but the stats sound great
Nice signing, I remember him standing out for the Bears ST in some game last year
Shame I have to hate him now.
:*)
we also re-signed Brendon Ayanbadejo at linebacker, both pro-bowlers!
Aren't you a bit worried you released Foxworth and Carr?
Not much depth at secondary. Smith looked lost at points last year, don't know how quickly he'll transition to the NFL.
mm, neither foxworth and carr really convinced me
we had an amazing secondary before Rex Ryan fucked off to the Jets with half our team. I feel attempting to bring new guys isn't any better or worse than what we already have tbh
we also signed this guy:
http://blogs.baltimoreravens.com/2012/03/23/baltimore-brings-on-safety-considine/
and jmeal mclean back
You have good safeties (even if they're a bit long in the tooth these days)
But your corners really aren't good enough for my money, no matter how well Webb played last year. He's got an eye for the ball but equally he gambles too much...
Jeff Saturday signs with the Packers
Peyton is probably crying his eyes out right now
counting his money more like
Marion Barber retires after just 7 seasons?
Wish I could retire at 28 as a millionnarie, don't see it happening in the next 3 years though

With all the Dolphins problems it's gone under the radar we've let Will Allen and Yeremiah Bell go in the last week. That's our secondary! I really hope there's a plan coming along here because it's starting to look treasonous.
In a continuing series of NFL players doing stuff
Tebow spends his first night in New York by going to a Broadway Show. He chooses... Wicked.
Did not see that coming.
Tebow's press conference was like watching a slightly menacing My Little Pony being interviewed
disturbing
he said excited 45 times :D
How many times did he say 'fun' and '... a jet'
The thing is, despite that, he's impossible to hate. I've got the feeling this could be a painful season.
in what way?
He's definitely not impossible to hate
I hate him passionately
The league approves the new overtime rules that have been in use in the playoffs for the last 2 years
Hopefully we actually get to see them used now.
Also turnovers automatically get reviewed in the booth now so the challenge flag will get used a lot less.
Tim Tebow might be throwing the ball to a rugby player before the season's out
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/rugbyunion/article-2095710/Saracens-forward-Hayden-Smith-targets-NFL-deal.html
thats quite an old article
shouldn't we know by now?
He'll probably make the practise squad with a team somewhere
but I doubt he'll ever make it on to the field.
dunno, picked it up off the ESPN site
They just ran an article on it yesterday.
http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/11620/jets-hot-for-aussie-rugby-star
well that's more upto date at least
I think he may have a chance, as that first article said, the Jets are going to want someone to try and match The Gronk and Hernandez
true, Tebow definitely needs a check down reciever
one that can preferably catch a ball that's thrown miles off-route
I wouldn't be surprised if the Jets under Tebow just turned to full blown laterals and backwards passes
you've potentially got two rugby players as it is, go for it!
haha yeah, maybe they could pick up Gavin Henson to be an RB too!
I think the NFL needs to do more laterals, you only ever see them downfield when a team is down by more than a field goal and time is running out. I'd like to see a team coach the WRs to not just support a runner with blocks but to get into space so a well timed pitch would probably lead to a TD
I've talked to people about this before
but it is kinda strange to think almost that no rugby coach has gone over there, seeing as there are no rules to nessecarily stop the game being played more or less like rugby. You'd have to tweak your formation and it would be ugly as hell, but it could be very profitable tbh
I've always assumed they don't do it because the risk of a turnover if you miss the pass is so high
whereas in Rugby possession changes hands far more regularly so tunovers don't count for as much.
Maybe this Aussie guy will teach em how to play rugby and revolutionise the game?
Yeah the cost of a turnover is much greater than a knock-on/scrum
Also I'm sure those helmets limit your peripheral vision. I've had this debate with a friend for years but I don't think you could make rugby techniques commonplace in the NFL.
Ryan Leaf is now a burgler apparently
Adding to his greatest bust of all time legacy
JaMarcus Russell has some catching up to do.
The Nike Jerseys are going to be unveiled later today
I doubt they'll change much on the Steelers jersey but I'm pretty excited about it anyway.
I reckon we'll see new designs for a few teams; Seattle, Miami, Carolina, Buffalo and probably most of all: Cinci I think will look a bit different next season.
looking forward to this!
ESPN are live blogging the unveiling
http://espn.go.com/espn/page2/index?id=7769089
Also there's already some Nike stuff on nfl.com, http://www.nflshop.com/category/index.jsp?categoryId=12850568
They've definitely made the Dolphins colours more intense right?
The new Seahawks uniforms are MEAN looking
Can I have a second team?
Only the Bengals one looks remotely different.
Not like Nike to hype a non-event like that.
The Bengals new uniforms look great.
Would like to see the Jets get redone. I've always preferred the Titans throwbacks to the actual green and white.
Really like this rule of only changing uniform once every five years. Good for the fans
Yeah, it's something the Premiership could adopt.
I'll probably get the new Dolphins jersey for the new season, 91 Wake on the back probably.
Might genuinely get a Seahawks one
'Beast Mode' on the back obviously.
Was going to wait until the Jets rebranded theirs to get a Revis one. Oh well, will just have to wait. Like I'm waiting for them to find a quarterback
Hawk's have always been my 2nd team, tempted to get a jersey now
I'll need to get a Steelers one first; probably with Woodley on the back unless Wallace signs a long term deal soon
Though not as good as the fake leaked ones
Which are totally badass.

THEY'RE FUCKING IDENTICAL
what a waste of time that was!
Morris Claiborne gets a 4 on the wonderlic

Dude, he's got a learning disability
Just seen this, but a tad weird this wasn't diagnosed before the test...
yet he managed to graduate from an (albeit) pretty average university. When does stupidity or lack of intelligence become a learning disability?
Jason La Canfora reporting on NFL that Leeds Rhinos' Kevin Sinfield is in talks to move to the NFL
As a placekicker I imagine, not a RL fan.
thats amazing!
Any listen to the Greg Williams tape?
Genuinely disgusting. Guy shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a football field for the rest of his life.
haven't heard it but heard about it
sounds fucked :(
I WROTE SOMETHING ABOUT FOOTBALL JAG
I wrote something for this blog (which is new and pretty good) about the Saints (feel they've been a bit neglected in the press recently...). I've never really written for anything before, and nobody I know will read it ever as none of my friends like NFL, so here you go DiS:
http://secondcityfanatics.com/2012/04/11/the-impossible-job-how-steve-spagnuolo-can-turn-the-saints-defence-around/
having just finished an essay
and watching the basketball, you caught me at a good time.
it was good, well written and researched and that
you guys don't have a head coach though, how are you not freaking out more?
Thanks for reading it man
I'll be freaking out when the season comes around for sure. I'd be a lot more worried if we didn't have Drew Brees. We'll definitely miss Payton, but it's all his own fault so can't exactly complain.
Pete Carmichael, the offensive co-ordinator, was in charge of calling plays for a few games last year and we scored 62 points in one of them... (it was against the Colts, but still). He's a talented guy, if inexperienced, but I hope with the talent we have a combination of he, Spagnuolo and Vitt can see us through, at least maybe too the playoffs.
Can't see a Superdome Superbowl win though :(
Has Brees signed a new contract yet?
Nope, not yet.
Payton begins his suspension on April 16th, so if it isn't sorted by then there's going to be a real shitstorm. Think that's when our voluntary off-season training begins too, and Brees hasn't said whether he'll turn up or not yet.
yeah I don't understand why you're not completely freaking out yet
thats much better written than half the NFL blogs I read
Does Strahan really have the most sacks in a game record? I knew he had the most sacks in a season record as everyone thought Ware or Allen would break it last year but I thought Derrick Thomas had the game record?
Cheers for reading,
and yeah you're right! I appear to have just pulled that Strahan stat out of my arse. Maybe should have checked that one, I'll change it.
the schedule has been announced!
http://www.nfl.com/schedules/2012/REG1
some match-ups on opening weekend - 49ers v packers, steelers v broncos playing primetime to herald mannings first start in denver, bengals v ravens
fairly pleased with the scheduling for the ravens season - despite our tough opposition it all seems evenly spread across the 17 weeks, although the bengals-eagles-pats triple header to start with is quite daunting
Dolphins have a ridiculously easy schedule by the looks of things.
I still think we'll be .500 though.
so glad there's another ravens fan here
another reason as to why last year was so frustrating was we've gone from having one of the easiest schedules last year to one of the harder ones this time out. We can still make the playoffs but we're going to have to work alot harder. That said, we were shite in games we were supposed to win last year, so maybe its the challenge we need.
as far as I'm concerned the season starts at week 3 against the pats, I am counting down the days, only then can we get on with trying to have a season after that
god this is going to be a rough year
week 11 onwards: @ Pittsburgh (prime time), @ San Diego (West Coast trip yuck), vs. Pittsburgh, @ Skins (historic rivals), vs. Denver (Peyton Manning), vs. Giants (Eli Manning)
fuck this shit man, I'm ragin about last year all over again.
we mathematically have the 4th hardest schedule this year
i'm a little apprehensive, and depending on how well we draft, our squad could be slightly weakened particularly in defense, so everyones gonna have to step it up a gear (i'm looking at you flacco)
so angry at how easy the pats schedule is - only four of their games are against playoff teams, compared to baltimore's eight. They're AFC favourites already
and
we're facing 13 teams whose QBs have gone to at least one pro bowl
Quit your belly-aching
Strength of schedule isn't as important as everyone makes out. Pittsburgh had one of the hardest schedules anyone's ever had in '08, we only faced two teams with losing records the year before but we ended up going 12:4 and winning the Superbowl.
If you want to be the best you have to beat the best. Besides your schedule is always gonna be tough as you have to play Pittsburgh twice! :D
playing pittsburgh twice wasn't much of a problem last year
;)
walked into that one
I do agree with your fundamental point though
if its any consolation ;)
Not happy about starting the season in Denver
Mostly because it means we'll be without Ryan Clark who we really missed in the Wildcard weekend. We've also got an early bye week which is shit too.
Jets Schedule is mainly interesting because we'll inevitably be riding the Tebow-train from Week 6 onwards
Week 2-5 is brutal. Steelers, Dolphins, 49ers, Texans. Ok, so the fish maybe aren't scaring anyone, but their defense can be scary good and they're definitely our bogey team (especially following Holmes-gate last year). Expect to see complete and utter sanchize meltdown in at least 2 of those games
woo woo!
Can't remember who said it, but one of the people on NFL.com said it could possibly be week 3 Tebow starts, which is ridiculous. I like the week 6 call though. What are the chances that New York puts a billboard up for Tebow?
oh and another thing
Thursday night football is every week now?!
Nike have designed a throwback for the Steelers 80th season
http://www.nflgridirongab.com/2012/04/17/nike-ups-its-alternate-uniform-count-to-2-introduces-new-steelers-throwback-uniforms/
Definitely not getting this
wow
that is hideous
oh dear god
http://www.kitbag.com/stores/kitbag/products/kit_selector.aspx?pid=86250&portal=B6H7JP6B&cmp= ???
its also a bit concerning they've used Issac Redman to model it
Could just be because he wears #33 (the year we were founded) or it could be further evidence that he's the new number one RB and Mendenhall is done for the whole year (and prob as a Steeler)
Has anyone taken a look at the pre-orders for the Nike jerseys
They say $100 until you click on them when it changes to £100. I'm getting pretty tired of Roger Goodell robbing me blind
The Steelers are meeting with Dontari Poe
If he slips to #24 I'd be very surprised, bloody love to have him in the 'burgh though; perfect replacement for Casey Hampton who'll no doubt turn up to camp over 400lbs again.
most mock drafts have him going mid 1st
but nose tackle and linebacker are definitely your draft priorities this year. need some new blood in that roster
shh, stop telling them what they need
:-D
Don't worry, Mike Tomlin doesn't listen to any of my draft recommendations.
He's going to be a flop
mark my words. I think Blackmon will flop as well.
I hope the GMs are marking your words
so he slides down the draft board a bit. His numbers at the combine were scary, if he's still there at #24 you'd have to take him.
I haven't seen enough of Blackmon to comment but it looks pretty likely he's gonna end up in St Louis so he'll be under a lot of pressure to perform early.
Predict your teams record
So, how does everyone think their team will do this season now that the schedule is out?
I have the Panthers down for 7-9 or 8-8.
The whipping boys this season will be the Dolphins, they just don't seem to have made much advance during this off-season. I see it as another kick in the teeth for Matt Moore, he seems a fairly good QB, but keeps getting put in bad situations so that he would lose.
Also, how does everyone think the Saints will do? I see them doing not very well this season. Brees doesn't seem happy and from what might come around, half their defence might miss games. Possibly, getting 6 or 7 wins.
you don't have much faith in your team do you?
it's too early to make steadfast predictions, but i have the panthers down for a winning record, maybe 9-7 or 10-6. their defense should improve and providing newton doesn't have a sophomore slump then the points will rack up. Add that to the saints possible regression, the bucs being an unknown quantity and the falcons only *just* beating the panthers in both games last season and i think you have cause to be optimistic. but the NFC has huge strength in depth so getting a playoff won't be easy.
for the ravens, i think we could possibly drop to 11-5 or 10-6, but i have no doubts we'll do enough to at least get a wild card spot. looking forward to seeing who we draft
I've been wrong for the past couple of seasons
So, i'm being more cautious this season. It's just our rush defence was SO BAD last season. If Beason can come back and be healthy for a whole season, that will help. We do need another CB, which I would grab in the draft. Newton will get less rushing TD's this season as we grabbed Tolbert in FA and I think he will play the short yardage. This might mean Newton could be throwing for more yards though.
I'm also coming out at 10/11 wins
but there's so many variables such as: Which Philly/Dallas/Giants, even Redskins, teams will show up... will Houston continue to build on last year's disappointment (they easily could have had us last year, this time its in Texas, and we were not good at travelling last year)... will Peyton and Denver be a good fit? We historically SUCK against Peyton, will Joe Flacco's excellent home record (people forget he's only lost like 1 home game his whole career, to Pittsburgh, the season we both won a game away) + REVENGE be enough to take us through a formidable New England team?
There's no reason why we can't/won't be competitive again this year, as of course our Black and Gold foes over in Pennsylvania (who will be looking for revenge) will be, but the problem is so will a lot more teams. What pissed me off so royally last year was that New England were the only real obstacle to stop us from getting to our 2nd superbowl last year, and the only reason they did was because of OUR horrible mistake, otherwise we totally outplayed them away from home.
This year in the AFC alone, as well as NE and Pitt, we have to deal with a Peyton instead of Tebow Denver, a Tebow'd New York Jets team, an at times unbeatable Houston team, the ever improving, young and bloodthirsty Cincy and Oakland teams, the often playoff bothering San Diego.
As Smyth said, the true test of champions have to get over such adversities, but last year felt so star-aligning and technically weak that we should still be kicking our-rapidly-ageing-selves for not taking the opportunity that was so easily handed to us.
I'm hopeful of a 12:4 record
Can definitely see us going 5:1 in the division (reckon we'll probably lose in Baltimore) with the other losses coming against Denver (don't fancy our secondary against Peytons Denver Debut), Philly (a game we should win but won't) and the Giants (JPP will eat Big Ben alive).
Pretty much agree with Severed on the rest, if Cinci improve the way people expect they could challenge for the division and San Diego could cause problems. I'm not concerned about Oakland, we usually handle Carson pretty comfortably and they still rely heavily on a rushing attack that'll really miss Michael Bush if D-Mac can't stay healthy.
now that Al Davis has died
maybe Oakland have a good draft. I forgot they dropped Campbell though who started last year well. They were massively over-performing last year but then so were Denver and only narrowly missed the playoffs. Also, Carson did take Cincy to the playoffs (at the expense of you guys, I may add) with a fairly similar team as recently as two seasons ago.
We'll probably end up on the same record and 1-1 tiebreak and win the division on the difference of say, a conference win.
Mike Goodson
Oakland did pickup Mike Goodson, who is not quite as good as Bush, but still pretty good. I think he had a couple of 100 yrds games, when D-Stew and Williams were out.
Great column by Trevor Pryce about retiring from football
He comes across really well. Eloquent. Plus read this bit:
"Now I find myself in music chat rooms arguing the validity of Frank Zappa versus the Mars Volta. (If the others only knew Walkingpnumonia was the screen name for a former All-Pro football player and not some Oberlin College student trying to find his place in the world.)"
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/22/sports/football/jets-trevor-pryce-is-retired-and-getting-tired-of-it.html?_r=3&ref=sports
That was superb
I especially liked "I set sail on the picturesque and calming waters of Bodymore, Murdaland." I'm surprised he didn't get round to watching the Wire whilst he was a Raven.
Brian Dawkins is retiring
real shame, I've always been a big fan of his; future Hall of Famer for sure
This is great. Especially the bit when he talks to the ball.

IT'S DRAFT WEEK!
whos excited? what needs do you want your team to address on thursday? top 10 predictions? whos gonna trade up or down?
here's my projected top 10, based more on team needs than the players themselves as my knowledge of college football is fairly limited:
1. Colts - Andrew Luck - no explanation needed
2. Redskins - RG3 - ditto
3. Vikings - Morris Claiborne - i don't think Matt Kalil is a lock at no. 3 like most people think. Ponder desperately needs some protection, but i don't even think a pro bowl LT would vastly improve his game. Kalil would help, but not significantly enough to warrant the 3rd pick (hence why they could trade down). Being in a division with three elite quarterbacks (if you class cutler as elite) necessitates strong pass coverage, so claiborne makes perfect sense for me. I'd love to see him battling against megatron and brandon marshall next season.
4. Browns - Trent Richardson - easy pick here. they could pick Tannehill, but would he really do much better than Colt McCoy, with the limited firepower at his disposal? doubt it. grinding it down the field with Richardson in the AFC North could win them a few close games, and the Browns defense was ranked surprisingly high last year (around 10th!). Richardson could be the playmaker they need to keep building.
5. Buccaneers - Stephen Gilmore - with Claiborne off the board, the Bucs should go to the next best corner in the draft (allegedly). they play in a quarterback driven division as well, and with talib possibly facing jail and ronde barber not getting any younger, cornerback is a big need. but they could fill any spot on the defense really.
6. Rams - Justin Blackmon - it seems to be between him and michael floyd, so for arguments sake i'll pick blackmon for the rams. they need a target for bradford to pass to. simple
7. Jaguars - Michael Floyd - the jags really need to help out gabbert, and spread the offensive threat to take the heat off MJD, or they could pick kalil.
8. Dolphins - Ryan Tannehill - miami have many needs, but none more so than at quarterback. i don't think anyone sees matt moore as a franchise QB, so nows the chance to go for tannehill, even though many think hes not worthy of a 1st round pick.
9. Panthers -pass rush is an obvious need, and this year seems pretty deep at this position. maybe quinton coples or dontari poe?
10. Bills - Luke Kuechly - he seems like the strongest linebacker prospect, and if he is as good as purported to be then the bills front seven could be something scary this year. watch out brady.
as for my ravens, i'd be happy with strong selections at WR, OL, LB and pass rush.the question is what do we prioritize?more protection for flacco? another weapon for flacco? a potential successor to ray lewis? more depth in the secondary? another pass rusher to ease the burden off suggs? names banded around for our first pick include center peter konz, LB dont'a hightower and tackle cordy glenn. on the whole we draft well so i have faith in the team.
secondary and offensive protection has been the biggest alarm for me for the last couple years
we have a decent receiver corps who get the job (generally) done, and we have Ray Rice who does everything for us anyway. Flacco needs all the time and protection he can get (remember when he was briefly nicknamed Joe Cool?) and defensively we still look incredibly shallow away from wherever Ed Reed is within a 20ft radius, but he can't be expected to do everything, and he's aging.
Matt Kalil won't be taken in the top 10?
I'm gonna be well mad if the Vikings pass on him.
he may well do
but i think all the teams in the top 10 have bigger needs than offensive linemen. if the vikings don't pick kalil then he'll shoot right down the board, possibly to the cardinals.
Ok, here's my bet
1) Luck (QB)
2) RGIII (QB)
3) Kalil (T)
4) Blackmon (WR)
5) Claiborne (CB)
6) Barron (S)
7) Reckon the Jags will trade out of this spot. Can see the Jets trading up for Richardson (RB). If they keep the pick I reckon they go cornerback, Stephon Gilmore.
8) Tannehill (QB)
9) Ingram (DE/OLB)
10) I see a Stanford lineman going here. Not sure if it's Jonathon Martin (T) or David DeCastro (G).
As for the Jets, I can seriously see us moving up for Richardson out of the blue
as noted above.
If we stay at 16, then it'll be a linebacker/pass rusher. Don't know who and none of them seem to be without their issues, but I'd hope it was more someone like Ingram or even Hightower rather than a project guy. Don't want to make the same mistake we made with Gholston.
In an ideal world, we'd be able to take Barron. I've got him going to the Rams which is maybe a bit of a weird one. Anyways, no way he makes it past the Eagles and the Cowboys. Would also like to see an offensive line pick but our real need is at RT, and at 16 I don't really like the options (Reiff and Kalil will be gone by then). DeCastro would be a good pick, but we're solid enough at guard.
2nd and 3rd round picks will probably be a WR and OL in one combination or another
Maybe even a third down type RB. Lamichael James maybe? We have a tonne of 6th and 7th round picks which I like, good chance to hit on something good and even a good opportunity to bring in a decent PK and punter.
i'd be hugely surprised if barron is picked as high as 6th
safeties don't seem to regarded that favourably in drafts, but it seems like slim pickings for that position this year so someone could grab him early on. wouldn't mind having him in baltimore.
I don't know
He's the complete package. As safe a pick as Kuechly if reports are to be believed. I think he may go a lot earlier than most suspect. Safeties are important again - need some to cover tight ends and RBs out of the backfield.
plus him + Revis = terrifying secondary
Yeah but pretty certain they won't trade up for him.
It's just not a priority (which it really should be). I don't want to watch Eric Smith eating Hernandez's dust all season long.
it's alright
Tebow will probably play there for a bit, seems like a good lad
Have you read he's going to play as a punt protector?
yeah :D
Hey, Severed799, think i've reached that freaking-the-fuck-out' stage now.
Brees yet to sign, so we're starting workouts with no head coach or star QB. Fantastic. I figured it's at least be close to sorted now. We've freed some cap-room by restructuring deals and don't have a big first-round college guy to sign this year, so why won't we just pay the fucking guy.
Mickey Loomis the General Manager has now been accused of listening in on opposing team's gameplans using some kind of Darth Vader-esque intercepting device. Admittedly the offence occured from 2002-2004, when we were still hopelessly shit, but either way, what the fuck. Fucking idiots in charge.
I can't even properly look forward to the draft as we don't have a pick until the 3rd round (is that the second day?). This is tempered slightly by the fact that our best picks in recent years have come in later rounds (Colston, Graham for example) and we've always drafted well late on.
Schedule is also pretty tough this year. Joy.
Defensive players will likely get bans next week too, so we'll probably enter the season with about 3 active linebackers and no safeties. Hi-ho.
sucks dude
I want to be more sympathetic but I guess the NFL has come down hard on you guys for a reason.
I think Brees must be making some ridiculous demands, either that or everything else that's going on has made them forget about him. You guys have been accused of listening into opposite coaches radios now ala patriots spygate, though this seems a little far-fetched to me.
Wierd situation with Brees, he obviously deserves to get paid, he brought New Orleans' only superbowl in their entire 40/50 year history at a time where the city needed it the most. But he needs to be careful he doesn't damage his reputation, considering he's always up until not been a pretty loyal guy. But now that Sean Payton can't even communicate with anyone in the league for the year, he must be wondering if its worth jumping ship.
dark days anyway, and a real shame from that great title winning team we were all cheering on a couple years back
So the Vikings are effectively on the clock already.
Kalil should be a slam dunk here. As much as Claiborne is obviously talented, he has his issues and I wouldn't feel comfortable taking him at 3. LT is a bigger need anyway and it's difficult to imagine a more perfect LT prospect than Kalil. Blackmon is overrated because he's obviously the best WR in the draft, he shouldn't go in the top 5. Julio Jones was far better coming out.
I think the Vikes pick is either Kalil or they trade down
I think they're probably happy to let everyone think they're set on Kalil so that the value of the #3 pick is higher but if someone else offers a lot to move up (like Atlanta did last year) then they'll happily trade down and hope to find value in multiple later picks.
The reports say otherwise, worryingly.
Although this might be the Vikings FO playing mind games in order to generate trade interest, idk.
That website that helps people set up affairs
has offered $1 million to any woman who can prove she had sex with Tim Tebow. Personally I don't think there's any way in hell Tebow's still a virgin; women (cheerleaders probably) will have been throwing themselves at him since college and he's only human.
http://www.nflgridirongab.com/2012/04/24/ashley-madison-site-uses-disgusting-promotion-to-try-and-deface-tim-tebow/
so, tonight
is there anywhere to watch the draft in the uk? espn america doesn't seem to be showing it
NFL.com I thought?
Don't think it's on TV.
Pretty sure it's on ESPN isn't it?
It was last year.
5 Live have decent radio coverage I think, with interviews with the players and stuff.
Just checked, it doesn't look like it's on ESPN.
Yeah, isn't it on free stream on NFL.com
just checked and it is streaming on nfl.com
doesn't specify if its free or not though
If it's streaming on there
It will be free. Just go onto the front page and there will be a link. They streamed the combine as well.
internet, ESPN streams
YEAH DRAFT! READING NAMES OUT AND TAKING PICTURES!
haha
i am debating whether to stay up or not, but i haven't watched one before and i can imagine it's quite a laborious and drawn out affair
the opening round is worth watching
because it has the biggest names and it doesn't go on for too long. It's quite interesting/fun getting a glimpse into the politics that goes into NFL, but really the most exciting things that happen is someone trading a pick up or down or someone picking a suspected bust.
That said, last year was brilliant because of the lock-out
Yeah i'm gonna stay up at least until the Steelers pick
I'm expecting some big trades and a lot of movement in the draft order (although not by Pittsburgh) so it should be fairly watchable. Plus the first round doesn't take long
Fucking annoyed this isn't on tv anywhere.
I pay for ESPN pretty much just for NFL stuff, but apparently they are only showing it on ESPN America in mainland Europe, and won't show it on SKY as they haven't yet signed a deal for this season.
Given the apparent US commitment to building the game in the UK, it's a poor effort.
I'm aware it's streamed free online, but I'm certain the astonishing incompetence of Usain Bolt Media's internet service will stop me enjoying that privilege.
This definitely reads like an angry Daily Mail reader's letter, but yeah, pretty pissed about it.
as discussed up thread, go NFL.com
Yeah, but my internet is dreadful.
I just disquised that point in a terrible Usain Bolt joke.
oh I got the joke
it's nearly time for some serious drafting folks
oh, word is Cleveland have traded with Minnie up to number #3
for Richardson
Browns have traded up to No 3, in exchange for 4th, 5th and 7th Round picks this year
They want to make sure they get Richardson, I'd say.
well I'm a whole 5 minutes behind
bloody draft
seriously though
Colt McCoy must be fucking off to the FBI like he said: http://pics.livejournal.com/century_fox/pic/0004ae38
obviously mean Peyton Hillis
I'm a mess, blaming the draft
I thought it was CIA?
why are people booing?
do people do to these events just to troll cunts?
Goodell booed again :D
i'm being told nfl.com isn't working
can I just suggest there's a good (american) espn stream on firstrowsports[dot]eu. Ray Lewis currently being inspirational in a promo
by not working
I mean you have to pay for it
jags
looking at trading up for blackmon
its going to be really, really, wierd seeing someone else starting for the Colts
strangely i can already picture luck in the colts jersey
well I guess everyone's known for ages
my pal just made the point that there's now going to be an abundance of "horseshoe/colt/luck" puns to follow
R G 3! R G 3!
Hope this works out for the skins
Not looking forward to facing Richardson this year
twice!
yeah I'm sure Ray Rice is quivering
honestly what was the point in that trade?
Vikes were gonna pick Kalil anyway and then Browns were next?!
Great stuff from the Vikings.
There was a load of misinformation leaked this week about Tampa trading up to get Richardson, it probably scared the Browns enough so they would make that trade. The funny thing is it probably came from Minnesota.
So the Vikes get their guy plus a three extra mid-late round picks - classic drafting.
Vikes played that perfectly
oh aye I mean more from Cleveland's pov than Vikes
St. Louis apparently are not playing this year
Really surprised with the rams decision there
Dolphins Suck! Dolphins Suck!
New York fans :')
just remembered I'm working in the morning
Weeden
Will be 29 by his first NFL snap. 29. #22 pick.
I'm actually good with it though. Suddenly teams have to think how to defend against us a bit. We now have a top RB but teams can't just load the box like last season because we have a QB with a big arm. WR and OL in the next few rounds and I'm happy.
its probably a good move; i never really thought McCoy was gonna come good
but I don't think a 29 year old QB is ever worth a first round pick.
Still its reasuring that a guy that old can still get drafted. I'm only 25 so maybe its not too late for me after all
Quinton Coples? Really?
This is a boom or bust project. I'm nervous.
Fuck man why didn't we just take Chandler Jones!
Seriously, another 'tweener OLB/DE
'cause that went so well last time didn't it? I really hope Rex knows what he's doing.
He was voted the most likely to bust prospect by NFL scouts.
He /could/ be great though!
Pass rushers are massively hit and miss in the first round anyway, I would never draft one there.
It's going to be Vernon Gholston all over again :(
Robert Quinn was a tarheel pass rusher as well and he hardly set the world on fire last year
Fairly happy with the Steelers pick, David DeCastro G out of Stanford
although this is the first draft in years where I haven't been hoping we'd take a G or T in the first round, i would've rather seen an inside lineback or nose tackle.
No team drafts as consistently well as the Steelers so I'm sure we'll find value in the later rounds
Interior OL has to be one of the safest positions to draft in the first round.
I like the pick /Mayock
Didn't even realise that the Vikings had trade back into the first round.
Harrison Smith, eh. Looks a decent cover-2 safety and fills a big need. Hopefully he'll be better than Tyrell Johnson.
Ravens yet to pick
that is all
Try being a Saints fan.
So we're going with Tannehill in the future.
I actually think Moore/Garrard/Tannehill doesn't look so bad now. I mean I still think we'll be .500 but there's a basis there to progress.
Some shock moves last night.
Had never even heard of the guy the Seahawks took at 15, although he's meant to be a very good pass rusher.
49ers pick was also suprising, but I liked it. And how fucking well did the Patriots draft? Can't stand Bellichek but he is incredible come draft day.
Courtney Upshaw is still there. Watched him a bit last year and he's a fantastic player, I'd maybe rate him as Bama's second bext defensive guy after Barron. I guess his versatility counted against him in first round. Could end up a Raven? Who knows.
couldn't agree more RE New England
Every year I look at their picks and think how did that happen? The guys they want always seem to fall to them.
The biggest knock on Bruce Irvin is his behavioural problems, could be a great pick if he keeps his act together. Its a risk/reward pick but I guess after choosing Aaron "Safest pick in the draft" Curry a few years back the Seahawks know better than to trust scouting reports religiously
i know like
why do people let New England do that, they're obviously going to win
HERE COMES THE PICK
heard it would be this upshaw kid
looks pretty talented
Called it up there^
Sweet. He's a fantastic player, shouldn't have dropped that low. Reminds me of Suggs a bit actually- watch out Skip Bayless!
totally
seems like exactly the kinda guy to fit into the Ravens
The Saints just drafted a guy from Canada.
Meant to be good, but when the fuck does that ever happen? Who was watching the Canadian College leagues?
Also, the Jaguars drafted a punter in the 3rd round .... :D
re: Punter
I love Rich Eisen. Can they just replace all footage of Michael Lombardi droning on and being a dick with Rich Eisen and Michael Irvin going nuts? Also, how many times per day does Mike Mayock say "the kid..."
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-draft/09000d5d828b07a1/Jaguars-pick-Bryan-Anger-No-70
:D
He's not a punter... he's a WEAPON!
he's such a troll
http://www.nfl.com/videos/new-york-jets/09000d5d828b78c5/Eisen-forces-Mayock-to-talk-Tebow?module=HP11_content_stream
him and moe syzlak make quite a team
Jets are really trying my patience here
Coples and Hill are probably the two biggest boom or bust guys in the draft. And we take some unknown linebacker with Bobby Massie (RT) still on the board?
Quite pleased overall with the ravens draft
Upshaw looks like an absolute steal for a second rounder, can't believe he passed the first. filled other needs as well - offensive line, wideouts, secondary, although I really wanted us to nab a strong, potential no. 2 receiver, but we'll see how streeter fares. would have also liked to see newsome take a punt on vontaze burfict
as I said upthread
I don't think top recievers are that urgent, Mason and Boldin (and Rice) do the job just fine, what is more important is protecting Flacco to make those passes
Mason!?
errrmmmm.
torrey smith*
in looking up our roster there I see Curtis Painter is now our backup QB
cool!
Actually really pleased with the Steelers draft
Aside from not taking a DB til the 7th round we've filled every need as well as getting 2 Offensive Linemen who'll probably start from week one. Hopefully keeping Big Ben upright will make our offense pretty scary.
And from what I've read about our later picks we've got a couple of real steals in Alameda Ta'amu (the next Casey Hampton) and Chris Rainey (the next Darren Sproles apparently).
If we could've just found a great CB I'd be a lot more excited about our chances this year.
You got David Paulson!
You lucky, lucky team! I loved that guy so much at Oregon , I'll probably have to start rooting for the Steelers now: by all accounts, he's an all-round awesome guy (was voted the team MVP this season by the rest of the squad), graduated with an MBA and was three-time Conference All-Academic and most importantly of all, he makes the most impossible catches that you don't think would be possible. More talent than a 7th round pick for sure, and I think I'd say that even if I weren't totally bias.
Ta'amu is ok
He won't stay on the field on 3rd down though. Big run-stuffer.
that's ok with me
for his first few seasons he only really has to replace Chris Hoke, I'm sure a few years under Dick LeBeau will sort him out too before he takes Hampton's NT spot
Jets analysis
If it comes off, this'll be a hell of a draft. More worryingly, if it doesn't it's a complete waste.
If Coples brings it and if he can stay motivated and the coaches get the best out of him he's a steal. I'm not so sure he will. New York is a big exciting city...
Hill I feel better about. The guy is a freak of nature, and he plays hard. Like the fact he's a blocking WR as well. Toughness is always a good quality. But he is RAW. He caught so few balls last season working out of an option offense.
The linebacker we picked up (Demario Davis) is one fast sonofabitch. Can see him coming on in blitz packages, maybe he's even a cover guy with a bit of coaching? He's apparently a tough special teamer as well, will play as a gunner or a jammer.
Know absolutely nothing about the FS we picked (Josh Bush) but he's a former corner, he's got speed and he's super smart apparently, both on field and off it. His stat line is pretty nice too. Wake Forest is a private college which has strict academic requirements. Good feeling about that pick.
Couple of odd later round selections, I get picking up the OTHER Robert Griffin from Baylor (G, 340pounds) as he'll be a nasty mean brawler in the o-line eventually, but why did we take Ganaway the RB? He's basically got a Shonn Greene like skillset, would have been nice to add a complementary third down type back with pass catching/protection ability. We already have a big back up bruiser on the roster in Bilal Powell who got taken 4th round last year.
Couple of 7th round picks could work out interestingly. Allen is a strong safety but he played a hybrid linebacker position in College, so he's big, fast, tough and a hard hitter but a bit suspect in coverage. Backup for Laron Landry/special teamer. The WR Jordan White is supposed to be very NFL ready and a good route runner. Suspect he's been added as a backup/special teams guy though.
Also, the Jets have basically become the Oakland Raiders
Drafting on athleticism, speed and size, it seems.
The ghost of Al Davis has possessed your GM.
Reverse analysis
From a college point of view, on where my Ducks have landed:
LaMichael James (RB) to the 49ers: Jim Harbaugh is a smart guy, got to see LMJ up close when he was still coaching Stanford (and watched him obliterate their defence with 250+ yards and three touchdowns), and knows that his speed, trickiness and all round talent is far too much to pass up on just because he might be a little small.
Mark Asper (G) should be a nice versatile guy for the Bills, I know nothing of their depth on the o-line, but Asper could fill in at a couple of spots easily, hopefully make his way to starting pretty quickly.
Josh Kaddu (LB) picked up by Miami, really good speedy, athletic guy.
Already mentioned David Paulson (TE) up thread, can't speak highly enough of him.
Gutted that Darron Thomas (QB) didn't get drafted having taken the huge risk of leaving early, really hope someone'll pick him up soon as a free agent. Really pleased for Lavasier Tuinei (WR) and Darrion Weems (OT) finding teams already, there wasn't really much talk about either having much of a prospect for the NFL, so I'm glad they've got their chances.
Eagles have signed CB Cliff Harris, projected as a first round guy a couple of years back before his disciplinary issues. What happened wit him last year at Oregon, with his bans and disappointing performances when he did play before being dismissed, it was so frustrating, the season before he was incredible. If he can stop making bone-headed decisions and get focused he'll have a great chance, 2010 showed he could be a top-class corner and excellent returner too. Maybe being away from the west coast will help him straighten up, it'll be such a waste if he doesn't.
Away from Oregon: it baffles me that Brosweiler can get drafted in the second round but no one picks up Kellen Moore until post-draft. Osweiler is a no-brain meathead with nothing to really back up his cannon of an arm, while Moore has probably the best football brain of any of this years QBs in the draft and isn't as deficient in his physical capabilities as he's being made out to be. I guess that' why I love college ball but can't get that into the NFL, I much prefer what's valued by the former.
Jags try out chinese kicker with appropriate name

Star QB with a hot blonde wife
kind of a cliche don't you think
Eric Mangini regrets turning in the Pats over the Spygate scandal?
He says he feels bad that their Superbowl victories are now tainted; they should be tainted! The Patriots cheated to get an unfair advantage, considering they've lost two Superbowls since the scandal by the narrowest of margins who knows how the three games they did win would've turned out if they hadn't been videotaping their opponents practices.
worst team in the league
I honestly hate them more than you guys
Yeah I hate them too
more than the Bengals or Browns.
I don't hate anyone or anything as much as hate your lot though!
what about Tim Tebow
Tough one, I do hate Tebow a lot
but probably not as much as the Ratbirds.
If Tebow ever plays for you guys that'll seal it
good god could you imagine?
we're enough of a joke with Flacco as it is!
Jonathan Vilma suspended for the entire season without pay
Saints are also gonna miss Will Smith for the first 4 games. Scott Fujita and Anthony Hargove also out for 3 and 8 games respectively. Harsh but probably fair (especially in Vilmas case)
Saints :D
Hmmm.
Not sure it's entirely fair. There's no precedent for this sort of thing sure, but 1 year is the same ban as Donte Stallworth got for a hit-and-run murder.
Also, as far as I'm aware, Vilma has never stamped on somebody like Suh, who got a paltry 3 matches.
* manslaughter of course, but point still stands.
Vilma's ban seems extortionate in light of that surely? But then I am a Saints fan, so w/e.
yeah, i see the point you're making
I would say the Stallworth case is slightly different though as he was facing criminal charges as well, the league obviously takes a different attitude when they're the people able to hand out a punishment. Kind of like how the FA has stayed pretty quiet on the John Terry racism case but wouldn't shut up about Suarez.
Also the league has changed quite a lot since the Stallworth thing, player safety has become the hot issue so there was no chance of leniency with player bounties. Its excessive because Goodell's trying to send a message
True, I guess the Stallworth thing is me clutching at straws.
Been the theme of the off-season so far.
Vilma's year ban still seems excessive to me though. Would love the evidence they supposedly have on him to be released one day, but it won't. He's denied any wrongdoing completely, and apparently the NFLPA have asked the NFL to qualify how the punishment fits the crime. Given they're looking out for the safety of other players as well as protecting those in the dock, it seems a strange thing for them to do if the eveidence is really that bad.
Perhaps the thing that's annoyed me the most is how the NFL waited till just after the draft to release the suspensions. I don't think it was in anyones interests to wait as long as they did.
Also love that James Harrison came out in support of Vilma, by essentially saying: 'told you so- i've always said Goodell is too harsh' :D
Junior Seau's dead!
Shot supposedly
Oh my word, so sad
Even though I only knew as a hated Patriot, he was a class act. Linebacker-U!
Apparently suicide. Terrible. Thoughts to his family, friends and teamates
RIP Junior.
welling up here
The sad and shocking news of Junior Seau's death has resulted in a flood of memories and testimonials, including a poignant anecdote from Saints G Eric Olsen.
Olsen was born and raised in Staten Island and he attended Poly Prep High School in Brooklyn, where he earned a scholarship to Notre Dame. He wound up being drafted in the sixth round by the Broncos.
On Wednesday, Olsen tweeted this touching story about the time he met Seau.
“When I was a [freshman] in HS, Junior Seau worked the Jay Fiedler Football camp and at the end of one of the days he challenged anyone to a 1 on 1 ...
“Being one of the ‘big’ kids, I was volunteered by my buddies and went up in front of the whole camp to face this monster of a man. Shaking in my cleats, he gave me a wink before a coach gave the cadence. He let me pancake him. And he sold it too…
“I can’t even tell you how good I felt at that moment; it changed me forever. The whole camp cheered for me, a chubby kid that didn’t know if he even liked football. From then on I was addicted. All thanks 2 this 10 time all-pro that felt like making some snot-nosed kid’s day…
“Doesn’t seem like much but it meant a lot to me. Sorry for the essay just had to share. RIP Junior I’ll never forget what you did for me.”
So sad
he was one of the real icons of the sport when I first became a fan.
Apparently he's the 8th member of the '94 Chargers team to die, suicide or not that's very strange.
also
looks like he shot himself in the chest rather than the head, he probably wanted his brain to be studied as part of the whole concussions/CTE thing. If it turns out his suicide was related or caused by him playing football (like Mike Webster's and probably quite a few others were) this issue is only gonna grow.
So sad, he seemed like a great guy.
Quite similar to Gary Speed's death in terms of him being a universally liked man who was at a similar point in his career.
interesting feature about nfl and concussion-related issues here:
http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2011/01/31/110131fa_fact_mcgrath
long read but worth it.
Interesting article, cheers.
I read this a few weeks back on concussions in the NFL (and NHL too). More of an opinion piece than above but really really well written:
http://theclassical.org/articles/sick-in-the-head
fuck.
suggs out for the SEASON with a torn achilles.
fuck fuck fuck.
oh no
that's awful news.
(kind of wish InsincereDave was around for this)
:D
seriously though, fuck off
:D I'm sure you'd say the same if it was Lamarr Woodley
oh aye
seriously, we're utterly fucked now
that man carried us to the AFC championship game last year
What a man.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/05/08/matt-light-reveals-battle-with-crohns-disease/
Seriously, how does someone manage to be a Pro Bowl left tackle with Crohn's disease? Awesome in the literal sense of the word.
David Gerrard has Crohns too if I'm not mistaken
Mental.
There was that LB who was drafted a few years back who had it too - the lad who went to Oakland? Think his might have turned out to be ulcerative colitis or something though.
LDT says he's 95% sure he's retiring :(
Jonathan Vilma is suing Goodell for defamation
Would be great if he wins
Ed Reed not 100% sure he's playing this year
Would be great if he retires
we have this same song and dance every offseason with ed reed
hes just hankering for a new contract, and with flacco and rice in talks for potentially cap busting deals, he shouldn't expect much, especially at his age. not that he isn't still valuable, but he should realise there are bigger priorities.
Shady McCoy signs a new contract.
Potential #1 fantasy draft pick?
Looking forward to the fantasy again.
How bloody long is the NFL offseason? Roughly infinty+1 years by my reckoning. There's only so much I can analyse draft picks, hear about suspensions, guess which player's going to prison this week and watch people argue about Tebow vs Sanchez without totally losing it. I want to draft a team goddammit!
I've started watching baseball.
That's what it's come to.
baseball's great
but I can't really get into it until the nba playoffs are done. what that instead.
Is there going to be a DiS
fantasy league for the coming season?
Sure is buddy.
Could we expand this year or is 10 the limit for participants?
Nah, 12 man leagues are where it's at
Antonio Cromartie's wife fakes a suicide attempt
http://www.nflgridirongab.com/2012/05/20/the-wife-of-jets-cb-antonio-cromartie-fakes-suicide-attempt/
Not the most exciting story (we are into the darkest part of the off-season now) but it did lead me to read that he's expecting twins so by November he'll have 12 kids with 8 women in 6 states; he's 28 years old. Clearly he's not a fan of birth control but even still he must be one fertile motherfucker
I've never even clicked into this thread before
but i've still had the words *peyton manning's sunshine tanning* stuck in my head all morning.
I was hoping Google would return some amusing hits for this phrase
nah

that's not bad
The NFL Game Pass is on offer at the moment
just renewed mine for £99, about £60 less than last year. Its still expensive but was I was really impressed with it, if they just added the Sky games it would be perfect.
I seriously want this.
I would easily get £99 of value from it, I just don't have £99 that I can justify spending on it. Stupid wife and kids, ruined my life.
I'm paying £24.99 monthly for the next 4 months
and on my credit card so I'll spread it out even further.
Last season I was watching at least 4 full games a week as well as watching NFL network pretty regularly so it pretty much pays for itself in a lost social life
Can I set up the fantasy league again for this season yet?
I'm getting emails every fucking day now. Seems a bit/far to early though.
Yes
No
I think its a bit early
I did my draft too early last year and ended up with CJ2K and Peyton Manning. I think its better to wait until after training camps so you at least know the starting QB for all 32 teams as well as the rookies who might make more of an impact.
I say set it up,
Just not have the draft until near the season start. Basically, I just want to make absolutely sure I'm in it again this year, so I'm gonna lurk in the corners of this thread until it's ready.
Yeah
When I set it up i'll be putting the draft date as late a convenient date as possible. Am thinking we should change it to 12 teams as well if there is enough interest? Also will try to make sure only people who will be fully into it and will be doing the full season join. There need's to be more trash talk this year as well!
I'll wait until there is a bit more consensus though.
I'm in this year
count me in
Okey doke, I'll get cracking early.
I'm going to break the ICT Browns this year, break them like an unruly horse.
I'm going to break your mum this year, break her like an unruly horse
Sorry that was uncalled for, I will dominate the league again though. Probably. Maybe we should all agree to put some money on it this year, like £2.50.
Also thinking of a name change on account of ICTBrowns being incredibly shit. Maybe Brown Noise. Maybe not.
Boy, that escalated quickly!
FWIW, I think we should keep the same names if possible, to provide some continuity. Also, it took me the entire season to get to grips with which team went with which username, and I still can't remember 1 or 2.
I could probably stretch to £2.50 to liven things up.
Ray Lewis comes to London to inspire Vernon Kay's team

lovely stuff
DAMNNNN
Dres Brees just got PAID.
he's gonna make $40 million this year
$40 fucking million!
unbelievable
If I could whistle I'd be whistling pretty long right now.
That's some deal.
eye-watering
I believe is the term.
It's an insane amount of money but he is their only chance to stay competitive in whats gonna be a rough couple years for them. Where's our resident Saints fan gone?
More than the rest of the saints offense will get combined, apparently.
And he's STILL worth it, gives them a chance at the SB pretty much single handed.
FINALLY :D
I don't give a fuck if we permanently screw up our cap space and future prospects, this off-season desperately needed some good news. We're gonna win the fucking Superbowl!
ray rice gets his deal
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d82a96d65/article/ray-rice-baltimore-ravens-agree-to-fiveyear-35m-deal?module=HP11_headline_stack
about bloody time. and worth every penny at that
Forte gets his as well
I'm kind of surprised at how small these deals are. Forte is gonna get around $8 million per year, that seems pretty cheap for a player that made up something like 60% of the bears offensive yards last year.
does seem a little bit cheap
although I don't think he's going to be relied on anything like as much this season with the additions of Bush and, more crucially, Marshall
everything seems cheap after that Brees deal
fucks sake
***NFL ARREST ROUNDUP***
A quick ready reckoner of this month's arrests in the NFL - a who's who of players who really need the season to start to give them something to do.
Marshawn Lynch - DUI
Elvis Dumervil - aggravated assault with a firearm
Dez Bryant - domestic assault. Also in the body of the article it says 'There was also an incident at a Dallas mall over low-hanging jeans. Bryant later apologized.' Basically wandering about with his arse out by the sounds of it.
Adrian Peterson - arrested for resisting arrest. Not sure how this works.
Justin Blackmon - DUI
Dion Lewis - misdemeanor reckless endangerment of property. Banged on a door a lot, basically.
A special mention to the Lions, currently leading the league in off-season arrests with 6 so far. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d82a22c89/article/detroit-lions-used-to-apologizing-for-offseason-arrests
The Lions arrest sheet looks like an absolutely fucking amazing 4-month party.
Dez Bryant does a Drederick Tatum

Well excited.
Was interested to know

Pre-season!!!
Is not actually that exciting. It never is.
Peyton Hillis looked good though, I think the Chiefs will be a very good team this year. Ball control offense, tough defense with an excellent secondary and some really good linebackers. They're this year's 49ers. Or they would be if the 49ers weren't still this year's 49ers.
For my very own Jets, the worries are starting to set in even if it's only pre-season. The Bengals front four collapsed the pocket on every single dropback it seemed. How have we gone from having one of the best o-lines, to one of the absolute worst? Surely not just Wayne Hunter's doing... And everyone in the AFC East has loaded up on pass-rushers. It's gonna be a bloodbath out there.
Rex Ryan on the 'Cro package' for Antonio Cromartie at WR
"We'll see how excited he is when he gets smacked by a safety. If somebody like that hits him, we'll see if that changes anything."
:D love Rex
RYAN TANNEHILL to start for the dolphins
:D oh boy.
lol
the dolphins are gonna tank big time this season. i actually think tannehill is a decent qb, but he literally has no solid targets to pass to. hes sinking before the ships even sailed.
i don't even think they have a set in stone no.1 receiver, and judging from hard knocks no one has stepped up to the plate in training camp...
i'm happy about that.
at least it's interesting. i think Moore's injured himself so there wasn't much competition anyway - Garrard would not tempt me to buy Gamepass, whereas i'm leaning towards doing it with Tannehill there.
it's a big concern our WR situation. i think Bess, Hartline and Fasano are due big years, but we are lacking a big deep threat. Johnson wasn't the solution obviously, which is a shame because i really like the guy.
oh and... jets fans:
http://www.theonion.com/articles/ground-emerges-as-tim-tebows-favorite-target,29210/
I only poke the Dolphins to avoid reminding myself of the mess that the NYJ offense is going to be this year
Tom Brady's all like
Can I just turn up in January? Cheers mate
at least Wayne 'Turnstile' Hunter is no longer starting at RT
frontside pressure is worse than blindside for Sanchez. he hates it when guys get all up in his grill
by the by, I really like Hunter as a person
he comes across very well and seems sensible and sensitive unlike most meathead OLs. But he is a crappy RT.
Also: JPP
What a guy.
http://www.vumee.com/members/video/2014/779
This video is kind of awkward.
Amukamara looks like he's about to burst into tears.
Yeah reading this it seems a bit sad actually

So it's basically the NFL equivalent of bullying the 'nerd' at school,
Except the 'nerd' in question is a 6'1" 180lbs guy. Right.
Mike Wallace is finally gonna report to the team
Hopefully they'll work out a proper deal for him so I can buy a Nike jersey with his name on the back.
Maurice Jones-Drew's holdout continues, rumors he's available for a trade. I usually support most player holdouts but I think MJD is being a bit greedy here, its one thing when you've got a year left on a rookie deal you've outplayed but he's got 2 years left on his second contract. Granted he's basically their entire offense but another solid season like he's capable of and he'd get a massive deal next year. He's still gonna make $4.5 million this season
The Jags are gonna be the home team at Wembley for the next 4 years
Can't imagine anyone is too happy about this, the Jags are one of the most underrepresented teams at those games
what I thought it was gonna be the Rams?!
yeah, that was suggested after the last game was confirmed
Not sure why it's not St Louis now but I know Stan Kroenke has all sorts of issues with his stadium lease. There were rumours the rams would have to pull out of this years game because their lease demands they play all their home games in St Louis so I imagine that probably caused it.
Anyone know who's showing the games on TV this year?
Presumably someone is but I can't find any up to date information.
i assume its the same as last season:
sky showing the thursday night game and the sunday afternoon kickoffs, channel 4 showing the sunday night game and espn showing the monday night game
Channel 4 have definitely got the Sunday night game,
and ESPN Monday, but SKY are yet to sign a contract apparently.
Kevin Cadle stressed that it will be done in time, but they're leaving it pretty late. This time last year they were showing NFL Total Access in the build up and there were constant adverts, so it all seems a bit quiet.
I hope it doesn't get done
the only downside to the Gamepass is not having the Sky games on it, last season I just went to my dads when the Steelers were on Sky but he's cancelled his bloody subscription.
^ Not this.
Can't afford Gamepass on top of Sky, don't want to have to watch on some crappy stream on my tiny laptop screen. Pull your finger out Sky.
the deal definitely will get done so I wouldn't worry about it
it would be disastrous for both sides if the Sunday games weren't on UK tv given how much more popular the sport is over here than a few years ago, it would be a massive step backwards.
They're probably arguing over something pretty small like whether the games can be shown on Gamepass as well or the exclusive rights to the RedZone channel
Revis will not be a Jet by this time next year. I guarantee it.
http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/14573/revis-questions-front-office
I'll always love you, Rev :(
yeah that sounds like he'll want out next year, can't really blame him
I'm not sure how the Jets sort out all their issues, its not as simple as a few free agent pick ups. Probably doesn't help that New York is the worst city to play in if you have question marks over your QB, even Eli struggles for love there; Sanchez and Tebow won't stand a chance
Tannenbaum seems to have full on lost it this year
completely out of touch with team needs. Need a new GM. I don't wanna lose Revis. He's by far and away my favourite player in the league.
How insanely good did Russell Wilson look last night?!
Just saw the Seahawks highlights.
Am I allowed to support Seattle this year? I don't want to support the Jets. It's too painful.
I think it was actually just Cam Newton in a 'hawks jersey
Must be a lock for the starting QB, feel a bit sorry for Matt Flynn; he must have been certain he'd get the job by default after the contract they gave him.
Seahawks have always been my 2nd team but this is the first year I'm seriously considering getting a jersey (prob with Thomas on the back)
He's basically Darren Sproles with a throwing arm
he made some very good defenders look absolutely silly
it's alright they'll find a way to fuck it up
So when are we drafting boys and girl?!
