most overrated and underrated pubs in your area?
Most overrated:
Common - shops converted into pubs are always soulless. Good beer (which is the most important thing) but the staff are too busy looking at their shoes and dreaming of being in Bearsuit, and as with most pubs in the Northern Quarter it tends to attract people with upside-down heads.
Most underrated:
The Angel - best range of ale, a proper old-fashioned boozer full of a mixture of local people and workers, just far enough away from the Northern Quarter to not attract skinny jeans sorts, attentive staff, good grub, an open fire, a piano, and a couple of wet dogs. Literally the perfect pub.

is everyone on DiS from manchester and i just didn't know?
common is great, top top food and one of the hottest barmaids in manchester. my mate sam worked there up until last weekend, i'm going to tell him to stop wantin gto be in beatsuit, haha
i love the food in comon
the halloumi burger is one of life's most pure pleasures. also one of the barmen (johnny depp) gives me a total wide-on, without fail. I love common.
I agree with both of those from the OP
The Angel is probably my favourite pub in Manchester.
I find the Deaf Institute overrated. It's a decent venue, but not somewhere I like to go and drink. Overpriced and Sand Bar across the road is much better for beer.
i'm really fond of the deaf institute
went there for the first time in probably 18 months the other night. it's just a really nice building.
It is a nice building, but...
they have a no cask ale policy, don't they?
I mean, they seem to be doing alright, but that just seems a bit weird to me given that it's so popular nowadays. I know they do some bottled beers, but not pints, so far as i know.
Haven't the people who own Trof and the Deaf Institue just taken over the old Salutation? That could potentially be a great boozer, but if they don't sell ale on pump i'll never know.
i don't know
i guess that sort of thing doesn't really interest me all that much so we're coming from different places. i remember the DI selling some cool african bottled lagers that i couldn't find anywhere else (other than sandbar). don't know if they still do.
i suspect you might be slightly over-estimating the popularity of cask ale though.
I see Deaf Institute solely as a Venue.
Sandbar is great though.
Yeah Deaf Institute is great for gigs
Like really great, but I wouldn't want to go for a pint downstairs. It's drafty and uncomfortable. Fucking love it upstairs though
dunno.
it's no coincidence that the pubs genereally considered the best ones are those with the best ale.
i find more people drink ale than lager nowadays.
i'm not saying you're wrong about that.
that's the same as better restaurants serving better food. keep in mind that the people you drink with are probably more discerning
deaf institue is such a sweet venue
You can't have cask ale everywhere. stop whinging, forza, fuck's sake!
Dunno really, all the pubs in my area seem to have adequate regard to how I rate them
Though more people should go to the Auld Shileagh. Love that place.
I like The Yucatan. Love that great atmosphere, could turn violent at any second vibe it gives off
I love the 'Tan as well.
I've seen it turn violent in there. It's quite, quite something.
I found the Jolly Butcher quite overrated as a place to drink (it's a bit like a middle class Wetherspoons) but you can't fault what they have on tap. Overpriced mind...
I've always liked the White Hart
Not a massive fan of the Shillelelele
The Yucatan is scary which is great - like the Cricketers used to be (now Jans, now not so good)
White Hart is good for watching sport in
I live round the corner from Jan's - it never looks open?
How can you not love the AS>? Best guinness, taytos and club oragne!
The White Hart's a tad poncey for me...
...although it's a nice winter pub if you're sat by the fire. Very cosy. Selection of beers ain't great but it'll do if I'm in the area.
I enquired about putting an event on at The Yucatan once
I was informed I'd have to wait on the outcome of an impending drugs prosecution.
Also love the little Irish fella who stands outside with a piece of string round his neck with a fluorescent piece of paper with SECURITY written in marker pen.
When Scotland played Brazil at the Emirates it was taken over by loads of Scotland fans. They were all stood outside kicking footballs at passing traffic
Jolly Butchers is a nice place for a drink
But I wouldn't go *drinking* there, so expensive.
Brooklyn on tap though
Yucatan is my london pub for watching celtic games
It could actually be from the east end of glasgow. A bonus is sometimes they have a polish lovely that will go and fetch another pint for you from the bar.
I spent every weekend between the ages of 6-14 in The Yuc
Finton is one of the nicest deadly men in the world
I'll focus on Chorlton
The Good: Bowling Green, The Bar, Dulcimer.
The Bad: The Horse and Jockey, Elektrik, The shitty one next to the Bar.
Nah.
The Good: Marble, Pi, The Parlour, Dulcimer, The Bar
The Bad: Bar 480, MyPlace, Spread, Royal Joke
The rest are inbetween. Elektrik and Oddest have great beer but are always full of screaming kids. The Horse & Jockey can't even be arsed selling their own brewery beers, and again seems to be a mixture of a pub and a creche.
How could I forget about Pi?
Marble is an odd shape and while I don't dislike it I feel like I'm drinking in a massive conservatory.
Pi is probably my favourite local.
I tried their Samiclaus the other day, the 14% one. It's pretty rank to be honest. Like cough syrup.
Two of the barmaids are incredibly attrative too.
Bowling Green is the only choice for a local regardless of how far away you live.
If you go into the backroom with the pool table there is a framed picture of the landlord dressed up as Hitler for haloween. HITLER FFS.
You get free nuts with every drink in Pi,
FREE NUTS!
If Pi is the place that used to be idaho,
then I'm glad to hear it's still top notch. Loved that place.
Directly opposite the Unicorn cash machine?
http://g.co/maps/76c28
Did you used to live on Albany, Wza?
I've struggled half-way through a bottle of Samiclaus before,
and then poured the rest away. Terrible stuff.
i went out in chorltojn with scout on sat inght
just for a couple of pintds like. We met in odder. Lots of beards. Barman SO CUTE. He gave us table service even though they don't do table service <3
then we went to another place to try and spot a hot mamnager guy but he wasn't working, although hayley did apporve at my discussions on poker playing with the bar staff. I can't remember the name of the place. this is a terrible story.
i think i might be very pissed
JFC
dulcimer, that's it.
overrated - orange tree
underrated - cucamaras
Nottingham yeah?
I didn't like the Orange Tree...
I really used to like the Sir John Borlaise (sp?) Warren but it's a bit of a trek out of town...
Nottingham is home to some truly, truly terrifying pubs.
I was LITERALLY about to say I dont like the john borlaise
but thought itd come across wankier-than-thou. Its gone downhill massively though
When I used to drink in it it was a bit 'undiscovered' shall we say...
...but I haven't lived in Nottingham for 8 years so it might have massively changed.
What's the pub next to the Cookie Club down that alleyway (not the Roebuck!). That's awesome.
malt Cross? Its run by christians though which creeps me out for some reason
I vaguely remember it from that long ago, but only because I used to play at J7 every month :D
malt cross is rubz
john borlaise warren used to be good during j7 times, aye.
a great little pub is the portland
its just off canning circus
recommended
I went full circle with Cucamaras,
from Loving it, to hating it, to loving it again.
Agree that Orange Tree is Overrated.
Mine would go:
Most Overrated- The Bodega
Most underrated- The Organ Grinder
Ha! I used to work at Bodega and it was getting bad then (but amazing to work at)
I hate the organ grinder, I live around the corner behind the ropewalk. Ok beer (when it prides itself on the beer). Black eyed middle aged couples, barmaids who literally dont know what theyre doing. Horrible place. My friends love it though, I dont get the broadway either, its like eating in a giant empty coke can
dont like broadway as a place to go
but they have a couple nice bottled beers and the food on the theme nights is good.
I've only been twice, and it was empty each time
I remember good beer and loads of free nuts.
I don't like the Broadway (except as a cinema).
I still do go to the Bodega a fair bit, but it's always a disappointment :(
My friend Leo used to manage common, I've djed on a Thursday night there.
However I agree, its toss. I played dj scoth egg cos I dont want to be in bearsuit. Nottingham
Best: Keans Head. Small, good beer, not full of cunts.
Worst: Ropewalk - Ideas way above what it is, full of dickhead students, fairy lights everywhere. Sell mini pies. Fuck off.
I remember when the Ropewalk was a bog standard, if massive, Scream pub...
...with all of the tacky fittings of a Scream pub. It was fine for its purpose.
Now it's ghastly. Absolutely ghastly.
rampant lion
<3 lurch and his huge 1.5 pint glasses
Big big fan of Lurch, not as a barman mind.
WE HAS SHEESHA. YOU WANT?!!?
I like the fact he then left the bar unattended to go smoke said Sheesha.
Lurch: Maverick Barman.
but he asked me if it was ok that he was serving becks in carling glasses
He didn't seem arsed that he was serving it in massive Magners Glasses.
what a champion
Erm...I don't really know how the pubs in my area are rated...
The Faltering Fullback isn't as good as everyone thinks it is, but it is still good.
The Bank of Friendship isn't as bad as it looks at first glance.
This is just a ploy to work out exactly where everyone lives, isn't it?
answering isn't compulsory, mate.
So?
I miss the Bank Of Friendship
Best pub in London to watch football on the telly.
I quite like The Scolt Head for that
Seperate room, rows of tables and chairs, big projector screen. It's a *little* bit Hackney, but enough of a real pub to get away with it.
The only problem with the Scolt head is that it's usually full of Arsenal fans.
Yeah, think the Bank of Friendship is a Spurs pub
:/
Sod off
the fullback is AMAZING
It's always so much massiver than I think it's going to be, too.
So.Much.Decking.
one third Irish pub, one third sports viewing beer hall
one third Ewok Village
I've just opened a pub!
I'm running the Lamb Beer & Liquor on Holloway Rd, down the Highbury end, used to be Bar Cosa. Fuck it's hard work, I've done about 80 hours a week, been open 2 weeks today. It's well nice though, we're booking acts as well if anyone's interested. And we've got Camden and Brewdog ales.
Live in N16 too, had some fun at the Yucatan, Jans is getting quite good nowadays. Coach and Horses always been a nice welcoming boozer.
Ah - I suddenly heard of the Lamb Beer & Liquor recently and thought it sounded unfamiliar.
My band might be up for playing. What's the best way of contacting you/sending a link?
i already know you!
it's martin off hungamunga, send me a message on facebook, be great to have you play. we're trying to get nathan as well, but he's not ready to play yet.
did you choose that name?
and if so, please can you tell me how you got to that? i've always wanted to know why and how pubs change their name.
If I had a pub I'd call it The Gold Lion
or Free The Paedos
it was called the lamb
when it first opened in the 1820s
ooh nice!
it'll be good to have more nice pubs down that end.
Let's go!
YES ALL PLEASE COME TO MY PUB
it's nice there, 54 holloway rd
I'll be popping into this bad boy soon, I hope you've turned it into a interesting boozer.
That end of Holloway road needs more!
some awful pub names in here
cheers
always really liked the hermit's cave in camberwell
Fantastic pub
I was in there recently and they had 8 (EIGHT) ciders on draft - I asked the barmaid if they were having a cider festival and she looked at me like I was a mental.
Most underrated: The Windmill on Saville Row
Most overrated: The bar at Claridges, although they do store their gin at a good temperature.
in manchester
the corner is underrated if only for the bar man who always is on by himself, looks just like the bassist from DFA 1979 and serves like a trooper
New Cross
Most overrated: The New Cross Inn. I assume it's rated by someone as a lot of bands play here. All of whom are shit. And the bar layout and selection of beer is also shit.
Most underrated: The Montague Arms. Interior like an explosion in a junkshop, Sam Smith's beers (among others), Sunday roasts for a fiver. No longer hosts ska burlesque unfortunately.
Sam Smiths at normal pub prices though
Less good.
The bottled stuff...
...is about same same isn't it?
New Cross/Deptford
+1 for Montague Arms
The Albert and the New Cross House are both good (NCH is expensive though, but it does have a smoking barn)
The beer garden at The NCH...
...is just awesome. They have a wood burner which is great for huddling around at this time of year (not today obviously where it is freakishly hot).
I went to NCH for the first time the other day and I was horrified.
What kind of a monster could do that to my beloved Tavern?
How long has it been since you visited?
I did love The Goldsmiths Tavern back in the day. Techno/ska/punk bands in the back room, having a cut thru between the two bars via the gent's toilets. I saw an early lineup of Placebo play there.
That said, it's been gone for years now. The one that I really miss is The Dewdrop Inn. Flats now :(
I realy like The Montague Arms...
some of the staff can be a bit rude though, not the pensioners...they're great/!
*really
I heard that the guy had sadly passed away?
and that they were selling up totally? so sad if true.
I think that sadly probably is true...
...It's been closed for about the past six weeks.
Underrated - The Carriage - nice bar staff and have Hobgoblin on tap
In my area
Overrated: The Market Porter
Yes, it's famous and the beers are usually very good, but it is always so unbelievably busy that it drains any idea of fun almost immediately. And too many tourists, taking photos and drinking halves.
Underrated: The Royal Oak
Lovely, traditional Victorian, proper two-roomed, music and telly-free pub run by independent brewers Harveys. Great beers and affordable pub food on offer. But somehow it is often difficult to convince people to pay a visit.
The Royal Oak is one of my favourite pubs in London.
Absolutely love it. The upstairs room is awesome for a small gathering/function too...
I love drinking round Southwark/London Bridge. One of my favourite's is a Shepherd Neame pub called the Rose and Crown (off Colombo/Columbo Road/Street or something?). Smashing, smashing boozer with a genuinely great garden.
The Blue Eyed Maid's good as well if you like a bit of spit and sawdust...
Not the Blue Eyed Maid
A bit too grim
Ah I quite like it for some reason! Although I understand if it's a bit much for some...
What's the pub just up from it down a similar side street... The Kings Arms? That's a BIT nicer I suppose and they also do a genuinely good happy hour (the beer's not too good in there, I must admit)
Know of it but never been in
With so many great pubs in the area it seems a bit stupid to go drinking in a rubbish place, just because it is cheap.
Aye can't fault that logic
But when it's a bit close to payday and my whistle needs wetting...
I've lived just off St Thomas Street for 2 and a half years
and have never managed to get in The Market Porter; there's never enough space to make me feel that having a pint in there would be anything other than an ordeal.
I have no idea which pubs would be considered rated, and as such underrated, but I like The Britannia on Kipling Street, if only for its epic collection of whiskeys (and lack of snobbiness about it).
In Harrow
Overrated: The Junction
Rude barstaff, poor choice of drinks, awful sofas, depressing garden. Not worth the cheap drinks and it's full of students. I manage to get by with going to good places, yet why do so many students accept mediocrity?
Underrated: The Trinity
The bottom floor is shit but the top floor is great. Good music, variety of drinks, friendly bar staff and just generally a really lovely atmosphere.
The Junction and Trinity
Man, you've just described every other Friday night aged 17-20
Ctrl + f: Trinity
^ agreed. I have no problem with downstairs though - the barman brings your drinks over, you get an enormous bowl of free nuts for your table on request, and they let you bring your own food in. Everything a pub should be.
most overrated- probably the trafalgar in greenwich
It's got the most amazinfg locaton but the staff are grumpy and their food is overpirced.
Underrated- the gypsy moth. Tattoo chef doensn't get enough credit, although he made a lovely lunch for me chintzy and meow last Thursday. I've takled to the manager about maybe putting on an open mic night there. #openmicmark2 It could be a great wee pub, it's just a bit boring just now (albeit chockers with hot studentboys.)
My friend got married upstairs at the Trafalgar.
Good Figgy Pudding.
That is all I have.
the upstairs IS AMAZING
I mean, I will probably get married there. Still, the downstairs is abit overrated. Although... THOSE VIEWS <3
The Angel
is the best! And it is right in front of my flat, which makes it even better.
this clearly
was supposed to go underneath the Manchester bit of discussion.
another one?!?!
unreal
We are in esteemed company- this is THE kirsty!
*THE* kirsty! (Of underachievers overachievements).
orite
:)
The Angel is nice from the little I can remember from being in there.
I don't know where the Angel is
I want to go there
There is so much evidence to suggest a wide scale Manchester meet up would end in a decent pub crawl.
It should be noted that I don't particularly like pub crawls.
i once tried to design a pubcrawl that ran disbury to the city centre
it would rival the otley run. nobody was interested.
Where did it start and end?
There's a brilliant pub crawl just round that edge of the NQ
Marble Arch
Angel
Smithfield
Wheatsheaf
Castle
Maybe Fringe/Crown and Kettle too. Burton Arms if you're feeling adventurous.
we have to do this!
although I'm a bit out of practice, drinking-wise. fallen a long way since Uni, when I could havw drank a rugby team under the table.
not in my area but the deaf institue
is great
also thanks to this thread i've been introduced to the term "wide-on" :-|
sorry about that
let's do glasgow now.
You first.
overated: Oran Mor
Underated: The Belle
oran mor is absolute wank
oh god yes, oran mor is a pile of pish
Underrated- well, places in glasgow don';t remain underrated for long. when stereo BACK IN THE DAY was a little-known venue, I'd have said there, but I went a few weeks ago and it was full of a bunch of rowdy girls (and a tall crazy haired foley lookalike) who apparently having some kind of MEAT. It was a disgrace, is what it was.
Underrated- cafe continental in gourck- cracking little restaurant/ pub which puts on great gigs and clubnights. it's bloody expensive though. I think I could get a pint of estrella cheaper in london.
it's cool i feel like i've learned something ;)
overrated -
stereo - i can't put my finger on exactly why i don't like it maybe it's the deliberate shit-chic decor or the playhouse "through the round window" seating, much preferred it's previous incarnation in the west
underrated -
definitely chinaskis - bit of a pricer pint but it has an excellent selection of beers/spirits, great tunes (importantly not played at nightclub volume) and has a pretty mixed crowd
christ i sound like an old bastard, now you go.....
haha, see above re stereo
it's just so fucking self-aware and righteousd. Fucking vegans ;)
LOVE chinaskis. Love the garden bit out the back and the steep steps that I always struggle with. I also chipped a tooth on one of their looseats doing coke with my old paralegal after we'd just signed a deal. I used to love those days. I'm so boring now.
i nearly said fucking vegans in my response but
couldn't take the ensuing heat ;)
i think stereo's really suffered from it's new location, that particular few streets of town get's a bit mental especially of a weekend!
good vegan for though!
*food
this said
The Old Hairdressers' over the road is crackin
Good shout with regards chinaskis, great pub.
You lot been to the berkeley suite yet? You'd better had! :)
Oran mor - sucks!!
Incidentally fitz, we must cross paths on an almost weekly basis!
And oeuf, in the past we must have literally bumped into each other so many times :)
I'm sure you picked me up when I fell off my heels and dropped my chips and cheese in sauchuehall street once
Where's teh berkley suite? I need a new place to go in glasgow. I might be moving back next year for a short while to open a new business :o
its a "speak-easy" style place inbetween Chinaski's and Black Sparra
Grimes are playing there soon, apparently they have all-nighters occasionally.
Its actually between chinaskis and koi i noor.
A grey front with no sign, ran by the same chap who owns chinaskis.
Late night drinking den from 11pm to 3am. I'm never out of there :)
You're moving back Oeuf?! God help us all ;)
what is your area?
well i suppose it's the NQ now that i think about it
i suppose it depends how far you think the NQ stretches? ;)
shudehill bus, along the edge of the arndale, straight up to the road AFTER newton street
left to ancoats, left along ancoats and back to shudehill bus station
ahm oot then
what's YOUR area?
cheeky
you girls
Manchester people...
did anyone used to go to The Garrett next to 5th Ave when they were like, 16/17?
I used to love it in there when they used to have all the old posters duck-taped to the wall and a drum kit hanging from the roof and stuff. Went into it last year or the year before and I felt a) so, so old and b) that they've ruined a perfectly nice pub.
Up there I usually just end up in Odder or the one around the corner near Nandos, both of which are perfectly acceptable.
yeah i used to go to the garrett before moving on to satan's
seems like a long time. i don't remember the place that fondly though. i was more or less dragged there all the time
hang on, the past is confusing me
i did used to go in the garrett but i always used to get dragged into that place that was above 5th ave. what was that called? that was really shit
Overdraught
I think
Been dragged in there once, we used to go in the Garrett all the time before going in 5th when my mate used to work in 5th. It was good. I think my mate runs the open mic night there still, I keep thinking about going but not going coz it's pretty out of the way if you're not going to 5th or Joshua Brooks or something afterwards
yeah overdraught
my mate went there last month. Apparently it's a gay bar now.
AXM now innit?
just where the dregs go after 5th ave cause it stays open late
yes, the OD
shithole. i like JB, a taxi nearly went over my head outside it once though
I like Joshua Brooks
but it smells of canal, so we never go there, even though i really like it the missus is all urgh we're not going there it smells of canal
*it smells of canal*
that sounds like a really middle-class put-down of a working-class area. I like it :D
I know
I know what she means though, that musty damp smell. A bit yuck but you gets a few beers in you, you forgets about it right?
isn't everyone in the Garrett about 16-18?
It was when I used to go
note to self
read the whole thread
tbf the main reason for remembering it so fondly is that
it was probs the only place that served us when underage.
Satans was fun for the free bar on thursday nights
Subquestion: Odd, Odder or Oddest?
Which do you prefer.
odder is opposite the beeb? is that right? i can't even think where oddest is. is that in chorlton?
Yeah.
The one opposite King Bee Records that reeks of urine.
well i haven't been in that
i suppose i prefer odd. it's a choice based on nothing though
Yes.
odd in the NQ
I got to sit on Karima francis's knee in there. #swoon
Defo Odd.
Odder is nice upstairs though. Someone once asked me if I was a DJ in there because I was talking to my mate about the Soulwax remix of Standing in the Way of Control (that's how long it is since I went in there). V strange. I've not been to Oddest. Incidentally, I used to work with the guy who took the photos that are currently up in Odd, massively talented.
onyl ever been in odder
so will say that. pizza's nice.
No.
I used to go to Idols on Oldham Street (topless barmaids!), or the Lazi Pig next door whenever the bouncers were in a bad mood and weren't letting kids in.
Both are long gone now. One's a hair products shop, i think, the other's the back of a shit music venue, OR SUTIN.
No idea what any of this means
Ah, because it was in the wrong place.
Great, thanks DiS
I used to love the Garrett.
Being outside there on a hot summer's evening before heading to 5th ave or Satan's was amazing.
what is/was the name of that pub that was past the top of Oldham Street & across the road?
I can't remember & it's bugging me. iirc it had a bike on the ceiling & definitely had bright orange cider that was in a sink behind the bar.
fringe
yes! thankyou
good memories of the cider and the jukebox and bad memories of being targeted by old men because I looked ike Frodo Baggins.
I had a good time in Manchester I can't really remember any shit pubs apart from The White Lion that was a bad scene. Someone threw a toilet roll at our pints and knocked them over and he was riding around the pub on a BMX at the time.
:'''''D
i didn't even finish that story
the kid actually stared at us like he was ready to fight and threatened to kill the landlord as he was escorted out of the pub. giving like graphic detail and stuff about how he'd do it.
oh that's why I didn't finish it cos that bit was horrible. oh well.
In my other frequently around places
Shepherd's Bush
Overrated - Defector's Weld. It's nice enough, but so expensive. I like on weeknight matches you'd get this odd mix of QPR fans and BBC execs.
The Goldhawk - Perfectly placed but fucking hell would it kill you to have more than one barman?
Underrated - The Crown and Sceptre. Off the beaten path but truly wonderful. Never have to wait more than 30 seconds to get served.
The Green Rooms. RIP. Literally perfect for football. Pool tables on raised platforms on the side. Massive screen. Big benches. great burgers. Good booze selection. Outside courtyard. off the main road so you didn't get cunts coming in. Apparently some more flats was more important
Farringdon
Overrated - The Jerusalem Tavern. OOOH, we're so old and we've got loads of amazing ciders and beers! Yeah, shame you can't fit more than 5 people inside eh
Underrated - The Castle. Breaking the rule that proximity to a train station = shit. Massive selection of beers, ciders and ales. A few years ago it used to be crazy rammed, but now it's just got a nice buzz about it
Gonna have to respectfully disagree on the Jerusalem Tavern.
The Castle is good as well though.
I've never been to the Jerusalem Tavern
because it's always shut when I've been past. I've heard it's super nice though!
It really is
You're so wrong on the Jerusalem Tavern
As long as you don't turn up immediately after office closing time (i.e. 6-ish) it is the best pub in Clerkenwell by quite a distance.
What? That's the main time you might want to go to a pub
And Clerkenwell is closed on weekends.
There are at least half a dozen better pubs within a 10 minute walk if you ask me...
fucking hate the jerusalem tavern
also, the beers are all st peter's and st peter's is bloody horrible
St. Peters is alright I think...
...the Organic Ale and the Golden Ale are nice pints. They're not a good enough brewery to make you want to drink in one of its pubs all night though.
They're based very close to Adnams in Suffolk I think. If it was an Adnams pub however, my opinion of it would go up ten-fold.
I'm with you on the Jerusalem I think.
It's a nice pub, don't get me wrong, but the love for it is a bit oversold. Also, it's not an authentic pub at all - one of the Saatchi's designed and built it in the early 90s or something. Bit fraudulent... but, still, nice pub but there are so SO many better pubs in the area (and ones which serve more than just ales from one brewer...)
Crouch End
Overrated - The King's Head. It's good and big, but it's too light, the food is hit and miss, and they charge £1.35 for crisps.
Underrated - The Railway Tavern. I think people avoid it because a) pubs called that are normally terrible and b) It's got little windows so you can't see what it's like inside. But it's nice inside (kind of 50s decor), you can always get a table and the food's good, and they have an open fire.
I hate The Kings Head
I think the refurb actually made it worse. The Railway Tavern is okay. Harringay Arms is brilliant even though it looks so shit from the outside, although I heard it had been taken over recently...
they've given the Harringay Arms an 'indie' makeover
I've not been in since, but they do pizzas and you get money off if you show your Flashback receipt. Probably quite nice, but it was the only normal/non-trendy pub nearby apart from the mildly terrifying ones up towards Hornsey.
fix
I can't think of any in Newcastle
i can think of one
the Crown Posada is a good pub despite everyone I ever talk to claiming it's all old men (usually this means the pub is better?) and despite the fact that my dad drinks in there.
Every so often I meet someone who thinks the bars on Osbourne Road are good so I suppose they're a bit overrated.
I thought everyone knew the crown posada is great
The staff there are lovely and they sometimes play an old gramophone. And the inside is beautiful. Only downside is that the toilets are freezing.

Not underrated on DiS
Whenever someone asks what pub to go to before a gig at the Union Chapel, this pub will come up as the undisputed answer.
The Threadsmash Arms
Really struggling to answer
'cos everywhere I liked to drink around Shepherd's Bush/Fulham/Chelsea has been taken over and gone a bit shit. But even the new, shit Goldhawk >>>> Defector's Weld.
The one place that comes to mind as being under-rated in Shepherd's Bush is, as awful as it sounds, the Walkabout. Yeah the beer is a bit pissy, but it's cheapish, they've got loads of sport on and Australasian people are probably the best strangers to drink around- very rarely cause any trouble and you sometimes end up going on a complete fucking bender with them.
I was hoping you'd pull one out for me
I'm a relative newcomer to Hammersmith and I haven't really sampled many pubs save for the ones on Fulham Palace Road (the Duke of Cornwall isn't bad but has no beer selection to speak of) and the fucking William Morris because everyone has to go there at least once in their lives
That said, The Dove still brings it. Cliche I know but
There's a few decent pubs in SW London
I love The Dove too. It is cliched but it's also very nice if you can get a spot. In fact I'd recommend walking the Thames from Putney to Kingston and stopping at every pub you come along, it's a belting day out. Both sides of the river are good too.
The Bricklayer's Arms in Putney is very good. Just serves ale but it's a wicked pub.
Some of the ones on Wimbledon Common are nice too if you like rewarding yourself with a pint after a long walk.
Wandsworth has several more down to earth, honest-to-God locals by the way
The pub on Brook Green has a great beer garden by the way
Is that the Queen's Head?
Had many a drunken night with colleagues in there. The chips are great but I think they've put the beer prices up recently.
That's the one
It used to be a belter but last time I popped in... I dunno? Wasn't quite the same?
I quite like the Fox & Pheasant right next to your ground
Never been in it on a match day mind
[Scene] The Defector's Weld
[Having finally been able to get served despite it being empty whilst the barmen flop their hair back and forth, our hero enquires]
Me: Can I have a pint of Guinness please?
[20 minutes pass]
Them: Yeah, that'll be £17.50 mate
Manc pub fans...
Sure we'd all say the same for the best pubs; some of those above, the Marble, the Castle, BP, Pev, C&K, Circus Tavern, etc, but what about others?
Anyone been to...
Micro Bar (Arndale market)
the Mark Addy (since it's refurb)
the Dolly House
the Gaslamp
Oast House
What do you think of the Bulls Head (Picadilly), the Jolly Angler, or Salford boozers - the New Oxford, the reopened Black Lion or the Crescent (great boozer)?
You could probably name 100 quality pubs within walking distance of the city centre. Madness.
Never heard of the Dolly House, where's that?
Micro bar is great, but strange surroundings made it hard to feel like you're in a pub. Mainly because you're not.
Mark Addy is always nice to sit outside in the summer next to the water, haven't been for a while.
Gaslamp is surprisingly nice, only went for some wanky launch night but still nice. Good stop off between city centre and Salford.
Oast House - wank. Full of corporate bellends trying to one-up each other. Mega busy both times I've been in. Kinda like the naff aesthetics to it though.
Big fan of the New Oxford, Crescent, etc. Looking forward to SFTOC - good excuse to head down that way again. Never been to the Jolly Angler, looks alright though.
the Dolly House is in the Gay Village.
i've not been, obviously.
meant to be a real ale paradise, apparently.
Doesn't seem to exist, according to Google.
that'll be because you've spelt the name wrong...

:D
Silly me.
had a good afternoon in the Mark Addy once
sitting by the river as the water level went up and up and up, then all kinds of stuff started floating past. Well mainly bits of tree/wood and different types of footballs. Was nice to watch. Then the water got too close to our legs so they closed the outside bit.
Cool story bro
my friend got angry because of a girl while we were at the mark addy
and threw a chair in the canal. maniac
City Arms on Kennedy Street is alright
Nice and compact, good choice of guest beers and a decent selection of whisky. The Vine on the same street is half decent too.
Keep on planning to go in Mother Mac's on Back Picadilly but haven't got round to it yet, thought you might've been in there as it's a City pub. It's a backstreet one pump pub (Hyde's) with a grim backstory - a former landlord is said to have murdered his wife and kids before hiding them in the dumb waiter and setting the place on fire.
Hang on...
...Mark Addy's the fat knacker who was in The Full Monty and the second Flintstones film ain't he? Why's there a pub named after him??
His 19th century namesake
was decorated for saving a number of people who'd fallen into the Irwell.
I'll do Tunbridge Wells for any Kentish people
Overrated: The Barn, The Ragged Trousers, Cassidys
Underrated: The Sussex Arms, The Bedford, The Swan
Love the Micro Bar
Great place to have a pint and people-watch.
Big fan of the Gaslamp too, although that's one of those where real ale seems to be a "premium" drink, so they charge more for it. But that's a whole other debate.
I like the Crescent too. Loads of great beers on, and lots of character (ie, torn seats). One of my mates works at Salford Uni and regularly goes there for lunch. He went the other day, and the woman who brought his food out apologised for taking so long. She said they'd had the health inspectors in a few days ago and now had to ensure that everything was cooked through before it went out, and that's why it took longer than usual. Brilliant!
Balls
This was supposed to be in reply to forzaborza's post up there.
google maps says i live exactly 0.4 miles from the angel
and i've still never been. feel quite bad now
more manchester folk!
this is quite incredibles
Hmmmm....
Pubs in Forest Hill where I live:
Underrated: All of them, because they all serve beer. Favourite though is Blythe Hill Tavern, proper awesome boozer.
Ony for Newcastle,
She’s into this sort of pounding fun pub shite and always seems to be a matter of weeks away from jetting off to another tacky resort, if only because the compensation from the last squalid self-catering fiasco funds the next jaunt to the Playa dos Botulismo. And her verdict on Linekers Newcastle? One word: horrible.
What the f is this? All me post eaten.
That was a quote. Just go on this website, where one man visits and reviews every pub in Newcastle. http://www.theburglarsdog.co.uk
I like the cut of this mans jib:

John Egdell, innit?
overated anything with the word 'lynch'
underated: The Forth, The Cluny
I was going to say Cluny was over
but only because everyone thinks that it's the be all and end all of indie hang outs
Cumberland, Tyne, Free Trade are all under
Free Trade is so good
the only prob is there's loads of Melvins on the jukebox but if you select any it's blocked
if anyone ever finds themself in Huddersfield
The Grove has an amazing variety of booze. best pub in town.
The Rat and Ratchet is also lovely with a not-too-shabby choice of ales, cider, etc.
and Vox is excellent, great range again and a good atmosphere...pictures of jazz legends up on the walls, friendly clientele.
also The Head of Steam up by the train station. great selection, nice atmos...lots of old signs and adverts on the walls.
I also like Parish, but then I have a soft spot for rock pubs.
avoid Warehouse, just another Scream pub crawling with students. that whole area is a write-off, a mix of small-towners and students, and the kind of places they frequent. with the noteable exception of Zephyr.
it's a long time since i've been to huddersfield
used to love a beer at the head of steam. also the parish and, sadly enough, the west riding. there was another pub i used to go to but i can't remember the name. it was a shit place but a nice big building. it was on a road that ran from the ring road right opposite the front of the uni and cut through the middle of the town past where burger king was. gonna have to google map it.
Cambridge area
OVERRATED: The Anchor. Basically a restaurant with beer nowadays.
UNDERRATED: The Free Press. Well, it is rated, but doesn't pull the punters in like other, worse establishments seem to do.
Malton (hometown; surprising number of pubs)
Overrated: the Yard. Went there once and picked the wrong day- it was a teachers' night out. My old history teacher was trying to come on to the barmaid.
Underrated: The Blue Ball. Lovely snug wee joint.
where's good for watching football in Manchester (where i can take girls)
Didsbury.
or the Lass.
the Lass O'Gowrie is tiny innit?
Nope.
when in my home town area
The Sussex Arms by Twickenham Green and The Adelaide at the end of my road.
Pubs in Bournemouth are all pretty shit. Christchurch is better. The Nelson Tavern up by Mudeford is probably my favourite
