Where do you stand on this? http://www.economist.com/where-do-you-stand/social-media?fsrc=scn/tw/te/wdys/social
I'd censor it full stop, personally.
There's genuinely no point in Twitter.
since becoming a dad? Scared shitless at the prospect of the little one wanting a facebook / tumblr account or whatever the future equivalent will be and being exposed to all kinds of explicit content, cyber-bullying...nevertheless, I can't see how social media can be policed to the extent that all the content and views expressed therein are nice, safe and reasonable without blatantly censoring free speech and encroaching individual liberties. WE'VE CREATED A MONSTER
Plenty of need to tighten up rules on proof of age, and more active monitoring of postings.
compared to most internet forums.
A lot of boards have mods that actually, you know, moderate, and enforce rules relating to swearing, flaming, "unconstructive criticism" in the case of a forum for a comic series I sometimes read (ie, calling someone's art 'piss poor').
The mods here pretty much just ban people for obviously trolling and nothing else.
but no, we only monitor the boards to ensure it's an environment that everyone is happy to be in. much like being in a pub, if someone is being a dick, everyone else tries to keep them in check, and every so often the landlord has to step in or someone has to call the rozzers/police (i.e. theo)
i always wanted to invent some sort of sin bin where people had to sit things out for a few days, rather than out right bannings but i can't work out how it would work and if it would just be totally pointless. and if some people would take pride in being side-lined. and blah.
i'm not a big fan of censorship but then due to the lack of barriers to entry i also feel like people should have a license to run a website in the same way they would to run a business. and i'd probably go a bit further and say you need to pass a test to post on the internet and to see certain corners of it, so that it's clear that you're fully aware what you're entering into and how you should try and act. i also think people should have to pass a comprehension test before voting, so that if they love the NHS but vote Tory then their vote should be halved in value or nullified altogether.
i mean certain sorts of businesses, like caring for children or being a lawyer or something that requires a qualification.
it's crazy that the Daily Mail haven't written something about how you need a driving license to drive around as you may endanger people's lives but you don't need one to use facebook where you can bully a child into such a state they commit suicide. i could totally do one of those trolling columns. I might invent a contrary altered-ego
No-one supports blanket censorship any more? What about those dictatorship mentioned a few lines above?
and also, presumably you can support some more guarded form of 'censorship' (including for books, films and the press! oh look, it's a super-injunction and the human centipede 2) that isn't 'blanket censorship'
basically, laid out with even less nuance than my uni newspaper's recent 'FOR/AGAINST LAD MAG BAN' spread
The very idea of how big the boobs could be in a big boobs issue of a magazine conceived to show pictures of women with big boobs is a little scary, tbh. How big can they get?
I reserve the right to be particular about different situations.
Social media is relatively new, and rules/conventions/consensus of acceptable and unacceptable behaviour need to be worked out to more an more granular level, but this should not be by hard and fast rules.
We try hard and fast rules in real life and we find people slippin through the gaps , too much or too little
we need to balance and when i say 'we' it means everyone....this is tricky and it brings up the whole real life issue of how we treat/deal with people who act in a way that others dislike......there is not his camp or that camp......and to try to set down where i stand on all aspects, (when i cant possible because there will always be something that has its own unique situation), however I would comment on particular stuff/instances
