If you get homemade pastry right, the results are mindblowing.
However, it has to be said if you're not out to impress and can't really be bothered with the faff than the ease of getting shop bought in does outweigh the taste improvements of making your own.
So, in summary, shop bought isn't as good as really good homemade stuff. But, shop bought will suffice perfectly in the vast majority of pastry-related occasions.
I'm not much of a pasta man so I probably wouldn't be able to really appreciate the distinction.
My guacamole is FAR FAR nicer than the nasty green gunk you get at the supermarkets.

You might be able to approximate something that tastes OK - but it wouldn't be the same.
