Unwanted signs of respectability
Ticket inspectors give my ticket a cursory glance.
Grannies don't cower in fear when I pass them in a dark alley.
Nobody follows me round shops.

On the beach...
Can you watch our bags so we can go in the water together?
this on trains when people go to the loo/buffet car
A few months ago a man left his children with me while he went to find a cash machine.

Yeah
I might start carrying a flick knife and greasing my hair back.
Being addressed as 'sir' at
People calling you 'sir'
must try harder
being trusted to teach A level biology
You share a nod of acknowledgement with a passing policeman.
Old ladies stop calling you 'young man'
You get odd looks at gigs
Bouncers ask if you're sure you want to go into a nightclub
Fellow passengers (especially female or elderly ones) look in your direction to encourage you to have a word with the feral youths on the bus or train.
Mothers of young children telling them to watch out for that man.
You look around. THEY MEAN YOU! YOU'RE OLD. Strangers think of you as a man. :'(
Only you Theo, only you.
I’ve had mothers tell their children that I’m a very nice man when I’ve given up my seat on the tube or something. Still sounds a bit weird.
I keep getting called lady
I'm really not a lady I can't tie my own shoelaces. And I look younger than their kids.
Seriously?
If mothers pointing at you saying `watch out for that man`. Looking old is the least of your problems.
alright psycho
:D :D
would you rather 'boy'?
or gentleman?
It was more about when it started happening.
It just seemed incredibly wrong. I'm used to 'man' now and boy would be ridiculous. But you grow older in body before you do in mind.
Clean shirt? What does that even mean?
aha a hahahahahahahahah
that is my second favourite thing ever from peep show
How do you get that shirt so clean?
Sub-thread: Wanted signs of respectability
Shop-keepers and tradesmen call you 'boss'
I hate that. Really hate it.
I feel like some colonial/upper-class schmuck.
I prefer bwana
I like it when burly barmen in rock clubs
call me 'Chief'. I think its a rock club 'thing'
people ask you to take their group photo, trusting you with their v expensive camera
Bouncers nod respectfully at you or say
`good evening`
Tutting at teenagers messing around
Cos of the treacherous ice Ive been getting a bus in the morning
and theres loads of kids on it who sing along to crappy songs playing on their phone. It was that 'kung fu fighting one' yesterday (after an asian woman got on the bus too..) and the rocky theme today. It took every ounce of self control not to scream at them to shut the fuck up and lob their phone out the window. I had to get off a stop eariler as it wound me up so much. I dont want to eb this person :'(
Nor do I, but I am increasingly becoming so
Cant wait til I start offering school kids out on the bus
Do they HAVE to
play shitty music out loud through a tinny mobile phone speaker? I mean, when did that become acceptable public transport behaviour?
Since before Star Trek: The Voyage Home at least.
1986?
Yeah - there's a scene in it where Spock does a vulcan death grip
on a guy listening to punk music on a ghettoblaster on a bus.
When
people call you a man. I know this has been said above.
It happens all the time at work. ie when I lifeguard and the child is messing around the parent will often get them to stop by say 'this man here will tell you off if you do that again'
Also, a bit off topic, but I've had parents come up to me before and say 'can you tell his to stop doing this please' to their own children. YOU WANT ME TO CONTROL YOUR CHILD FOR YOU? I know wearing a uniform and being in a slight position of authority helps, but jesus people!
ALSO, and I was just thinking about this earlier on actually, but
when I was at school in upper 6th I was head of house. When we all came back to school after a half term or any holiday on the Sunday night I had to take a register. It was always the case with any head of house and I never asked for it, but everyone had to reply with 'sir' when I called their name.
Countersigning official documents and being used as a reference
That's not unwanted though.
I feel totally boss when someone asks me to sign their passport form.

Not getting patted down at airport security.
I enjoy this
I actually look forward to it. ANY KIND OF HUMAN CONTACT, PLEASE!
they're not going to sleep with you, Chris
I HATE this.
I'm so very tickleish.
hang on.
I've fucked this. Mine isn't unwanted at all.
massive pervert
No no
I'm saying, not getting patted down is a sign of respect that I like.
They see me walking through the metal detector and think to themselves, ''this guy is totally fucking legit, and way cool. I'm not going to embarrass myself by patting him down. I'm not worthy of touching him''
I got bodyscanned last time I went to the airport
I look like a total fucking terrorist badass motherfucker.
You look like a dirty drug mule.
police cars not slowing to down to see what i'm smoking.
That's not unwanted either.
