Thursday Gaming Thread?
i know i dont usually do these and i havent a clue what goes on it them to be honest.
BUT, ive started playing Lord of the Rings online.. the free game
It is brilliant!! im only on Level 8 but i only started last night properly. Took me a while to figure out how to walk properly and look around at the same time.
So yeah, anyone played this?
Its night time now in the world and the sky is amazing. It even has all the star constellations that we would see from here. :o
Sorry is this is totally behind times, im fairly new to the modern gaming world.
This has blown me away.
Cheers.
Missbass you're banned from this!
the is no news! I COME HERE FOR THE NEWS!
I play LotRO too :]
Beautiful, isn't it?
is it as beautiful as the northern lights in Skyrim though!?
at the moment i just play Rayman Origins, it has the most upbeat joyful soundtrack in years
That soundtrack is fucking incredible
especially the underwater ones, the variant on the same melody create so many moods!
I've been (I thought) taking the advantage of this being a nonsense game
So I can turn the volume down and listen to my stereo. Seems like I'm missing out then.
Great game though. How are you guys getting on with the timed challenges? I have a grand total of zero of those :/
you're definitely missing out, it's as much an audio treat as it is a visual one
I'm not too far through the game and haven't attempted any time trials yet, will probably save these for the 2nd playthrough once I've completed it - quite challenging I take it?
I shall rectify tonight
Yeah they are dead tough. I've tried to blitz the first level a couple of times, thinking I've made it in great time and still nothing. Also no sign of how far off the pace I was.
Ignore my talk of the timed runs
I didn't realize you had to activate them at the start of an already completed level.
Still tricky, but far from impossible.
You're missing out son
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcnGHqp-jUI
have you seen the making of documentary?
the Chief Sound Designer chap is a proper crazy frenchman, with big curly hair, a billowing white shirt and crazy square glasses
underwater vocal melodies are magical
This weeks gaming has been fantastic
Resident Evil Revelations - fantastic
Gears of War 3 - fantastic
Rayman Origins - fantastic
I played LOTRO for about 3 months
but then my grandad threatened to chuck me out if I didnt get a job. Was really lovely to run around middle earth all day - Im glad you're enjoying it :D
Playing Bioshock on the PC after I got it in the Steam sales ages ago.
It's so much better on the PC using a mouse. I got it for Xbox ages ago and thought the controls were terrible and just stopped playing. The demand for accurate headshots coupled with the inability to aim down sight was awful.
you can aim down the sights.
Anyone played the Syndicate demo yet?
I was planning to last night but I just ended up on Battlefield 3 for a few hours.
everyone seems curious about it
nobody seems to have actually played it
I think it's because everyone who remembers Syndicate expects it to be terrible
and everyone who doesn't can't see any reason to care.
Not looking good for GAME
having credit problems etc
Hmm, I think I've got a 20 quid GAME voucher somewhere
Should I spend it now or wait for a big meltdown sale?
Can't say I'd be sad to see them go. Their policy of seemingly exclusively hiring people who know fuck all about games was bad enough. Buying Gamestation and forcing upon them their policy of seemingly exclusively hiring people who know fuck all about games was a bit much.
From what Ive read
they'll be ok for a couple of months but struggle to get new titles in on launch day... could be gone by the end of the year.
Don't like GAME, but don't like the idea of a download only future
easy to see gaming pretty much disappearing from the high street soon
still can't see download only coming in any time soon though - you only have to look at the demographic which have made up a huge percentage of the Wii/DS market to see that the market's probably not ready for that yet
so physical copies will more than likely hang around for a while, but only for online purchases which is a bit sad - some of the best games I've bought have been from random lunchtime boredom store browsing
From experiences in Enfield, Basildon and Chester
them people working in GAME and Gamestation were on the ball for me. Big shout out to the Gamestation Chester, I tried to fox them on a particular couple of queries just to be difficult and they gave me information beyond the call of duty (the questions weren't do you sell Call of Duty BTW)
mixed stories on this but definitely not looking good
stories of not having sufficient credit/funds to purchase stock (and therefore not taking any more preorders) or pay wages are apparently untrue
however anyone who has tried either their stores or website recently will know how poorly stocked they are with new (unused) products so something's definitely up
apparently EA have concerns
over future profits as a result of a major chain in the EU having credit problems...must be GAME
To be honest i buy all my games online now, i feel old and depressed going into a game shop, full of kids and their mums buying absolute shit
What i can't understand is how they havent managed to get a business model that works, around Christmas GAME was absolutely heaving, second only to Next
they never seem to have anything in stock
other than the latest FPS or loads of overpriced 2nd hand games. as mentioned above the staff there generally know fuck all. (although 1 girl in gamestation was very helpful last time I went in) And in Manchester theres 2 stores in the Arndale centre... can't see the point in that.
there are 3 GAME's and 1 Gamestation in Southampton city centre
which isn't exactly massive.
I think they got a little over excited when doing their business plan
I traded in Mario Party DS at Game this week and got £20 for it
I'm not sure they have a business plan
AHAHAHA
AHAHAHAHAHAHA
Good, frankly.
Worked for Game for a number of years. A shower of cunts.
obvs bad if people lose their jobs,
and don't get paid though
why would middle earth have the same constellations?
It shouldn't.
even if it was supposed to be set in 'our world' on 'our earth' just at a time, 'way in the past' the constellations would be different.
I SMELL A CON!
oh yeah
hadnt thought of that.
still class though!
Havn't bothered playing anything in ages
but got a couple of games in from IloveFilm and spent a few hours playing Brutal Legend. It's significantly better than I thought it was going to be. Part RTS, part open world action game, with driving bits yadda yadda. the individual components are pretty standard all things considered, but the soundtrack is decent and I like the world design.
Wouldn't recommend it as a purchase, decent as a weekend rental.
I described it to myself as Skyrim for people who got out the house to have sex and thought i was highly amusing.
The RTS Side of the game gets incredibly annoying after a while
I relly enjoyed it up until the 2nd half
I'd have been very annoyed if I had shelled out £40 for it.
I've only done one stage battle and i got a bit shouty as there's often a lag in the controls which FUCKS ME OFF NO END, but it might just have been the controller i was using.
I played the first one and I was like 'oh this isn't so bad, don't know what the critics were bitching about'
then they happen more and more frequently and you're left thinking 'yeah y'know that really fun hack n slash game we had for the first 4 hours.... yeah I want that, not a broken & frustrating RTS game on a games console'
ah well
you've saved me three hours of playing a game I'd increasingly hate.
I'm trying to join the Dark Brotherhood on Skyrim
Every time I go anywhere near their endz though there is the hardest bastard of a dragon who keeps turning up. This is the first time in the game where something has just beaten the shit out of me with ease almost immediately. It's frustrating.
just when i thought there would be no mention of Skyrim...
I was getting bored of it, then i got sucked right back in by an interesting plot twist in the Thieves Guild.
I like that this game has the potential to do that after I've been playing it for over 50hrs!
The Thieves Guild is great
Most fun storyline I've done so far
I'm guessing I've nearly finished it, so it's a shame if it's the best one
but I've not started the Bards College yet, or even found the Dark Brotherhood.
Forget the missions - go exploring!
You have to get the mission to kill the orphanage owner in Riften
from the kid in Windhelm, kill her, then sleep.
I quite like the Thieves Guild stuff
though think one of the quest lines might be bugged- there's some useful stuff I've nicked (like the model ship) which says it's a quest item, but not related to any quest I can see?
They're the quest larceny items
Delvin will buy them from you, theres one for each main thieves guild quest. Annoyingly my game is bugged out and he wont acknowledge me having the eye of the falmer from the last quest, i even tried reverse pickpocketing him to no avail.. the cockney bastard bought the rest no problem. You can see them all in the bookshelf behing mercer freys desk in the cistern.
Loved the thieves guild quest, very reluctantly gave up my skeleton key to finish it.
the ship is one of the things you can sell to Delvin
i only picked it up because it seemed a bit random, and the text came up telling me to take it to Delvin. It's one of the misc quests
I tried as well. You have to go to Falkrieth don't you?
Had no joy whatsoever.
Aye it's right near there
I'm trying to walk there from Helgen though as I've not visited Falkreath yet. It's just this bastard Elder Dragon who is really ruining me at the minute
Lately what I've been doing is looking at the map, and wherever there's a
spot with not many discovered locations, I've been going there and finding caves, etc.
Just bought my 2nd property in Solitude..
how doe you buy a 2nd house?
i've got the first one with the lovely Jordis the sword maiden (the thinking man's Lydia) but being able to buy a second house would be great.
what's the point of getting a house?
Aye, I haven't bothered yet
I keep all my shit in the chest up the top of High Hrothgar
I read something somewhere about someguy
arguing that houses were amazing because it gave you somewhere to put all the interesting artefacts and books you find. He was extolling the virtues of building up a library of all the books you can find, so that you can always go back and re-read them all.
I don't want to be like that.
As leader of the Companions
I keep mine in my bedroom.
you could kinda cheat
and get a horse and cart there..
I'm just gonna do the noble thing and train up more before smashing the fuck out of it
Either that or just try to outrun it
i did a mission last night where you have to free some guy imprisoned by the Thalmer
and after i asked the guy in my group what we were gonna do suddenly from no where he was broad-sided by a blast of frost breath. turned out a blood dragon had landed next to us while we were talking. scared the absolute shit out of me.
Just done this with Mercer Frey and [spoiler]
http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Speaking_With_Silence
And now off to speak with NPC X about Item Y that I was given. YUS. LOVE SKYRIM. UNF.
when the fuck will they remake Elite?
thats what i want to know.
arent there space MMORPGs that you could play
that's pretty much exactly the same thing, but maybe with an actual goal instead of just flying from space station to space station occasionally shooting at someone.
i remember elite being incredibly, incredibly fucking dull.
then you are either:
1 - too young to have "been there" when it first came out.
2 - a git.
I have to plump for option 2 I'm afraid.
=D
I much preferred Kung Fu Master to that mopey boring nonsense.
ba-da-da-dadum dadum dadum.
its easily the greatest game of all time
for many reasons
Never
It'd take one hell of a masochistic developer to spend money creating a game they'd get nothing but shit on for. See Syndicate above: kids don't care and old schoolers would instintively going to say, "it's just not the same." Making that game would be amongst the most thankless tasks you could possibly imagine.
hmm
On July 30 2008 Develop magazine posted details from the Develop conference during which David Braben confirmed a release of Elite 4 will occur following their upcoming title The Outsider.
As said in an interview, he was planning to start working on Elite 4 - as a space MMORPG game - as soon as The Outsider went gold.
"In January 2011, David Braben confirmed that development on The Outsider had ceased, but the game had not been cancelled."
Can't advise holding your breath on that one.
Well...
the Syndicate thing is mainly down to the fact they've decided to take the franchise name and use it for a completely different type of game - likewise XCom. It's one thing doing that with a well established and current franchise, but to do it with a dormant one where the name only really means something to those that liked the original style of game is utter idiocy.
I'd hope that any developer taking on the Elite franchise would have the sense to make a space trading game rather than a sports management simulation.
Fair points
And as with xcom the decision to make a 'true' excom remake as well has been greeted pretty warmly to be fair (not least by me).
It's just a rarity that it happens that way. I'm always wary of asking for sequals/remakes of the games I treasured as a youth. The results are rarely positive.
*sequels
there's probably scope for making a good Elite-esque game as a spin-off from another popular franchise
you could definitely use the Mass Effect universe for this sort of thing
if you remove the story missions and concentrate on the
mining and exploration is it not pretty much the same thing?
Terminally boring.
I cannot imagine anything worse
than current day Bioware getting their hands on the Elite license.
still havent opened Skyrim yet
apprehensive.
Get the eff on with it
probably gonna put it off for another month or so
and try and be productive this month.
i hate to break it to you
but you run a weekly online family fortunes-style quiz for over 100 people.
Dare I say it, almost bored of skyrim
Completed Thieves Guild and Companions and doing Mage's College and Dark Brotherhood blows in comparison
That said I got smithing up to 100 and made a full set of daedra armour. I now spend most of my time just marvelling at it
I know that this is an old post, but just wanted to say that
during Christmas, I thougth that I'd reached this point - after a 100 or so hours of playing, but then I just started exploring the perimeter of the map, and came across so many interesting missions starts.
Lately I've been collecting the Daedric artifacts (which I read about on Elder scrolls wikia), of which there are 16 to collect. So far I've got the Spellbreaker, the mace of Molag Bol, the Dawnbreaker, the Skull of corruption and the Sanguine rose.
I really wanted to get the mace of malacath, but I can't trigger the mission for some reason.
Ah, the Mace of Molag Bol is pretty snazz.
Got Azura's star as well which is pretty useful..
Is it good? I was considering getting that one next.
Im loving the fact i can jam out with people on lutes and flutes
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/860/jamminh.jpg/
Also it's been ages since I last played an MMO but i'm joining this one
on your head be it if I lose my life
It wont let me install it
keeps on saying I don't have an internet connection, whilst I clearly do! FUCKING STUPID SOBS
just came back in to say...
im really addicted :( :)
dunno how to feel about that, but this game is great.
Only thing is, im thinking about all things Lord of the Rings now when im not playing.
It's always on my mind. . . it's always on my mind.
Skyrim next (although im a little scared to, it will suck me in too) the only think stopping me is, im shit at looking around, walking and shooting at the same time with the ps3 remote.
Tried installing it again, its working!
HUGE FILE
PS3 Remote, bless
Got the demo for Twisted Metal last night
Good old school computer game craziness. I have very fond memories of the first game, add to that online multiplayer and it should be great fun if nothing else.
wheres the best place to buy PSN codes online?
I want the simpsons acrade game. cheers
Worth pointing out to all you folks who haven't bought Rayman yet
that it's £13 here today:

Glad this got bumped.
Did anyone see the news about the DoubleFine (Tim Schafer/Ron Gilbert) Kickstarter campaign? The target was to raise $400,000 dollars to enable them to make a new graphical adventure game. It got $1.3m in a little over a day.

I love Double Fine
Can it also be noted that the Minecraft dude is apparently offering to fund Psyconaughts 2
MAKE PSYCHONAUTS 2 YOU SHITS
Back to Skyrim

This^ is some of the stuff the devs came up with when they were messing around for a week. Would be very cool if even some of it gets added at some point.
