Thursday Gaming Thread?

MissBass [Edit] [Delete] 93 replies 02:53, 2 February '12

i know i dont usually do these and i havent a clue what goes on it them to be honest.

BUT, ive started playing Lord of the Rings online.. the free game

It is brilliant!! im only on Level 8 but i only started last night properly. Took me a while to figure out how to walk properly and look around at the same time.

So yeah, anyone played this?

Its night time now in the world and the sky is amazing. It even has all the star constellations that we would see from here. :o

Sorry is this is totally behind times, im fairly new to the modern gaming world.

This has blown me away.

Cheers.

  • I play LotRO too :]

    Beautiful, isn't it?

    twentynine | 2 Feb '12, 08:39 | X
  • is it as beautiful as the northern lights in Skyrim though!?

at the moment i just play Rayman Origins, it has the most upbeat joyful soundtrack in years

    Noblet | 2 Feb '12, 08:58 | X
    • That soundtrack is fucking incredible

especially the underwater ones, the variant on the same melody create so many moods!

      • I've been (I thought) taking the advantage of this being a nonsense game

So I can turn the volume down and listen to my stereo. Seems like I'm missing out then.
Great game though. How are you guys getting on with the timed challenges? I have a grand total of zero of those :/

        the-breacher @Yesiamaduck | 2 Feb '12, 09:15 | X
        • you're definitely missing out, it's as much an audio treat as it is a visual one

I'm not too far through the game and haven't attempted any time trials yet, will probably save these for the 2nd playthrough once I've completed it - quite challenging I take it?

          podge @the-breacher | 2 Feb '12, 09:21 | X
          • I shall rectify tonight

Yeah they are dead tough. I've tried to blitz the first level a couple of times, thinking I've made it in great time and still nothing. Also no sign of how far off the pace I was.

            the-breacher @podge | 2 Feb '12, 09:50 | X
            • Ignore my talk of the timed runs

I didn't realize you had to activate them at the start of an already completed level.
Still tricky, but far from impossible.

  • Playing Bioshock on the PC after I got it in the Steam sales ages ago.

It's so much better on the PC using a mouse. I got it for Xbox ages ago and thought the controls were terrible and just stopped playing. The demand for accurate headshots coupled with the inability to aim down sight was awful.

    Sibley | 2 Feb '12, 09:25 | X

    having credit problems etc

    Matt_was_taken | 2 Feb '12, 09:36 | X
    • Hmm, I think I've got a 20 quid GAME voucher somewhere

Should I spend it now or wait for a big meltdown sale?

Can't say I'd be sad to see them go. Their policy of seemingly exclusively hiring people who know fuck all about games was bad enough. Buying Gamestation and forcing upon them their policy of seemingly exclusively hiring people who know fuck all about games was a bit much.

      colossalhorse @Matt_was_taken | 2 Feb '12, 09:39 | X
      • From what Ive read

they'll be ok for a couple of months but struggle to get new titles in on launch day... could be gone by the end of the year.

Don't like GAME, but don't like the idea of a download only future

        Matt_was_taken @colossalhorse | 2 Feb '12, 09:41 | X
        • easy to see gaming pretty much disappearing from the high street soon

still can't see download only coming in any time soon though - you only have to look at the demographic which have made up a huge percentage of the Wii/DS market to see that the market's probably not ready for that yet

so physical copies will more than likely hang around for a while, but only for online purchases which is a bit sad - some of the best games I've bought have been from random lunchtime boredom store browsing

          podge @Matt_was_taken | 2 Feb '12, 09:46 | X
      • From experiences in Enfield, Basildon and Chester

them people working in GAME and Gamestation were on the ball for me. Big shout out to the Gamestation Chester, I tried to fox them on a particular couple of queries just to be difficult and they gave me information beyond the call of duty (the questions weren't do you sell Call of Duty BTW)

    • mixed stories on this but definitely not looking good

stories of not having sufficient credit/funds to purchase stock (and therefore not taking any more preorders) or pay wages are apparently untrue

however anyone who has tried either their stores or website recently will know how poorly stocked they are with new (unused) products so something's definitely up

      podge @Matt_was_taken | 2 Feb '12, 09:40 | X
      • apparently EA have concerns

over future profits as a result of a major chain in the EU having credit problems...must be GAME

To be honest i buy all my games online now, i feel old and depressed going into a game shop, full of kids and their mums buying absolute shit

What i can't understand is how they havent managed to get a business model that works, around Christmas GAME was absolutely heaving, second only to Next

        • they never seem to have anything in stock

other than the latest FPS or loads of overpriced 2nd hand games. as mentioned above the staff there generally know fuck all. (although 1 girl in gamestation was very helpful last time I went in) And in Manchester theres 2 stores in the Arndale centre... can't see the point in that.

  • Havn't bothered playing anything in ages

but got a couple of games in from IloveFilm and spent a few hours playing Brutal Legend. It's significantly better than I thought it was going to be. Part RTS, part open world action game, with driving bits yadda yadda. the individual components are pretty standard all things considered, but the soundtrack is decent and I like the world design.

Wouldn't recommend it as a purchase, decent as a weekend rental.

I described it to myself as Skyrim for people who got out the house to have sex and thought i was highly amusing.

  • I'm trying to join the Dark Brotherhood on Skyrim

Every time I go anywhere near their endz though there is the hardest bastard of a dragon who keeps turning up. This is the first time in the game where something has just beaten the shit out of me with ease almost immediately. It's frustrating.

I was getting bored of it, then i got sucked right back in by an interesting plot twist in the Thieves Guild.

        • I quite like the Thieves Guild stuff

though think one of the quest lines might be bugged- there's some useful stuff I've nicked (like the model ship) which says it's a quest item, but not related to any quest I can see?

          TheSoundofBastards @Antpocalypsenow | 2 Feb '12, 15:31 | X
          • They're the quest larceny items

Delvin will buy them from you, theres one for each main thieves guild quest. Annoyingly my game is bugged out and he wont acknowledge me having the eye of the falmer from the last quest, i even tried reverse pickpocketing him to no avail.. the cockney bastard bought the rest no problem. You can see them all in the bookshelf behing mercer freys desk in the cistern.

        Gorkys_Forever @xheathenx | 2 Feb '12, 15:19 | X
    • Never

It'd take one hell of a masochistic developer to spend money creating a game they'd get nothing but shit on for. See Syndicate above: kids don't care and old schoolers would instintively going to say, "it's just not the same." Making that game would be amongst the most thankless tasks you could possibly imagine.

      colossalhorse @Gorkys_Forever | 2 Feb '12, 15:25 | X
      • hmm

On July 30 2008 Develop magazine posted details from the Develop conference during which David Braben confirmed a release of Elite 4 will occur following their upcoming title The Outsider.

        Gorkys_Forever @colossalhorse | 2 Feb '12, 15:28 | X
        • As said in an interview, he was planning to start working on Elite 4 - as a space MMORPG game - as soon as The Outsider went gold.

"In January 2011, David Braben confirmed that development on The Outsider had ceased, but the game had not been cancelled."

Can't advise holding your breath on that one.

          colossalhorse @Gorkys_Forever | 2 Feb '12, 15:31 | X
      • Well...

the Syndicate thing is mainly down to the fact they've decided to take the franchise name and use it for a completely different type of game - likewise XCom. It's one thing doing that with a well established and current franchise, but to do it with a dormant one where the name only really means something to those that liked the original style of game is utter idiocy.

I'd hope that any developer taking on the Elite franchise would have the sense to make a space trading game rather than a sports management simulation.

        colinzealuk @colossalhorse | 2 Feb '12, 15:37 | X
        • Fair points

And as with xcom the decision to make a 'true' excom remake as well has been greeted pretty warmly to be fair (not least by me).

It's just a rarity that it happens that way. I'm always wary of asking for sequals/remakes of the games I treasured as a youth. The results are rarely positive.

    • I know that this is an old post, but just wanted to say that

during Christmas, I thougth that I'd reached this point - after a 100 or so hours of playing, but then I just started exploring the perimeter of the map, and came across so many interesting missions starts.

Lately I've been collecting the Daedric artifacts (which I read about on Elder scrolls wikia), of which there are 16 to collect. So far I've got the Spellbreaker, the mace of Molag Bol, the Dawnbreaker, the Skull of corruption and the Sanguine rose.

I really wanted to get the mace of malacath, but I can't trigger the mission for some reason.

      • Ah, the Mace of Molag Bol is pretty snazz.

Got Azura's star as well which is pretty useful..

dunno how to feel about that, but this game is great.
Only thing is, im thinking about all things Lord of the Rings now when im not playing.

It's always on my mind. . . it's always on my mind.

Skyrim next (although im a little scared to, it will suck me in too) the only think stopping me is, im shit at looking around, walking and shooting at the same time with the ps3 remote.

  • Got the demo for Twisted Metal last night

Good old school computer game craziness. I have very fond memories of the first game, add to that online multiplayer and it should be great fun if nothing else.

  • Glad this got bumped.

Did anyone see the news about the DoubleFine (Tim Schafer/Ron Gilbert) Kickstarter campaign? The target was to raise $400,000 dollars to enable them to make a new graphical adventure game. It got $1.3m in a little over a day.

This^ is some of the stuff the devs came up with when they were messing around for a week. Would be very cool if even some of it gets added at some point.
