favourite goal of all time?
the goal you used to try to recreate in the garden or playground (or DiS football sundays)
Ronaldo vs Compstela without a doubt. its also the first game i remember watching on telly.
the goal you used to try to recreate in the garden or playground (or DiS football sundays)

David Hopkins
Palace vs Sheff Utd, play off final.
Zidane's goal in the 2002 Champions League Final
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crDzasp1-60
Perfect
i think the perfect build up in that goal
contributes to its overall awesomeness. its weird watching all those players knowing they've retired (except robbie carlos)
You're right
Zidane is still my favourite player of all time, too
Always this. Always, always this.
I dislocated my knee attempting to recreate this.
I actually struck it quite well in the process, heard the knee pop out and as I fell looked to see the ball heading for the top corner only tobe clawed away one handed by a diving goalkeeper. Literally insult to injury.
When I was young it was the Gazza/Sheringham/Shearer combo goal in Euro 96
Here's an incredibly shakey version of it...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HY_RVEqCGI
Nowadays it's this. Bristol City players almost NEVER do things like this...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqsKvCFVw-E
(apologies for shit music)
I was sat behind the goal for that Clarkson effort
The DIP on that ball, deliberate or not, was amazing. Don't think it shows up well on the video, but it looked like it was heading for the Avon Gorge, then dropped like a stone. Outstanding, that game gave me so much hope for Clarkson as an attacking midfielder/deep striker. Then, as you say, nothing.
Shame really.
During his second season I really thought he'd click eventually and turn into a really good player for us - really looks unlikely now.
I'm convinced Woolford's actually a much better player than he's ever actually looked for us too. Not sure what the issue is it is but I wouldn't be the least bit shocked if he went to another club and actually looked pretty good...
I agree!
Woolford gets a lot of stick from around where I sit, but I don't understand how someone can be player of the season at Scunny (Who let's be honest aren't MUCH worse than us), then so totally indifferent after moving to City. Think he's definitely a confidence player; he put in some great performances earlier on this year, but then lost it a bit, and has been out of the team again since Yannick's started playing so well.
Two City strikes in one thread?
I think so.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUcfCCivl8A
Noble vs Palace. Smashed.
Outstanding strike. And obviously gets extra points for being an important match!
Bosh
Trundle's effort in the second leg was pretty special too.
maybe a bit obvious
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=fvwp&NR=1&v=YML_mGUegPQ
Always had a woody for this Carlos peach

Continuing the Bradford City theme:
Probably this effort from Chris Waddle in an FA Cup 4th round tie versus Everton.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Pk3dndA4NU
I probably remember it more fondly because I was there, but still, a great lob.
it's down to these two. i can't pick
pirlo's pass oh my.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzihn2msbKg
giggs will tear you apart.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quI_LkMj4HI
Predictable perhaps
Carlos freekick against France:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pl0LHM-33Io
I just find this one really well worked
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFaIJU-ddtk
it is beautiful
the dummy run from batistuta, everyone looks the wrong way, lovely finish.
hm
live;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2QSsMLpVco (always)
tv;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqAFg1WxG-k (the third, as much for the crowds reaction)
even though he turned out to be shite
that Macheda goal is still a really great moment
far too long for a Bergkamp mention
for shame: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVLRMWjHa0U
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4vVC6OYLu0
Probably this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssp28n6r_yE
It always amazes me how low the ball ends up in the goal after going so far over the keeper's head.
that goal is fairly ridiculous
there's no reason for him to have a shot from there/at that angle :D
clarence seedorf v athleti 1997
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRFnsRPOQu8
Hamit Altintop Turkey vs Kazakhstan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToGzAY69N40
or
David Suker Croatia vs Denmark
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2ut4AwrLso
Before the World Cup there was this competition for Final tickets
where you had to film yourselves recreating a famous world cup goal. Me and my friends did the Owen - Argentina one, i got to be Beckham knocking the pass through, we didn't win mind and its not my favourite goal ever
this is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6soG_agvQZc
Josimar vs Northern Ireland, Mexico '86
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvroUsu6VgM
Remember seeing it live at the age of 8. Have loved football since.
...and, with my club supporter hat on
Trevor Sinclair, obvs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVcIR6ftJuk
love that goal
Trevor Sinclair - better with or without the dreads?
With, no question
This ain't bad from Josimar, either
in the same World Cup
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGQXPILKZlQ
He only made 16 appearances for Brazil
and those two (ond only) goals were in his first two caps!
Any number of John Barnes goals as a kid.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOE3P2ryfg4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOILkVsEoEU
But these goals, purely for the technique stood out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0UefhlOQkY
And this one from Terry Mac: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3j-zCBIOzl8#t=1m17s
This, from George Weah: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDuZpma_Oxs
and its gonna be barnes...curls...BRILLIANTLY!
'rush, barnes, rush, barnes...YES'
'barnes...uses him by not using him!'
any of those in there?
The 'uses him by not using him' line
was from the Tottenham v Arsenal semi-final, I thought, and was about Lineker.
The others are in there.
what gets me about that Ronaldo goal at the beginning, is how muted the commentary is
in this country they would be busting their guts screaming superlatives
Dougie Freedman for Crystal Palace
In the last minute on the last day of the season in 2001, away to Stockport. A goal that kept us up.
Messi vs Zaragoza
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HqjbTTFr3Y
Fuckkkkk
almost as good as this
www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOWrtCOMxto
the composure and foresight to dink it over the sliding defender on the line
is the best bit
Oh man...
There should probably be a separate thread for Messi goals i guess, but that one against Zaragoza is right up there. Strength, pace, skillz and the finish. Sublime.
ever watched his 'all goals for barca' video.
its ridiculous. every goal is amazing.
Davies vs Torquay
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itSJAi13Be8
The goal that effectively put us in the Football League. All time Shots legend.
live...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZR48Cnn9FU
oh clinton
Best goal I've seen live
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66Q10RUaA2M
Favourite has to be McFadden though
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxFzoDU4Gco
Still brings a tear to my eye.
that reminded me of this;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byK2oBB_ucQ
one of the most fun halves of football i've ever seen. AN WUT A STRIKE!
RIDIC
take yer pick from these giggs goals
his isnt even a comprehensive list there are several of my favourate goals missing from this compilations.....but really what is more beautiful than watching giggs break free running full pelt panicking the defence, beating 3/4 defenders then shooting past the goalie.......well perhaps watching giggs tying defenders in knots before leaving them in a heap of their own making weeping on the floor trying to untangle their legs
oh the link would help
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK_QPvFcILc&feature=related
this was great. am listening to spotify and shine on you crazy diamond
came on i muted the youtube clip and it actually fits perfectly.
Definitely
Bully's last minute winner against Birmingham in '96. Cried my little 12yr old eyes out listening to it on the radio.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=MyLwMzU0hAg#t=220s
that ridiculous le tissier one where he just swivels on the volley from about 25 yards, no effort.
conversely, also tony yeboah.
also, NAYIM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tp8SjQjqEEA
favourite spurs goals - gazza 1991, lennon 4-4, ginola in the fa cup vs barsnley.
this was before my time but i can't get enough of it. GLENNHODDLEISHAVINGAGOAL:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdfCAGD-_go
Shoulder drop? I'll take ten please.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgqsaDnsEq8
Have always loved that goal
Unbelievable tekkers.
most frustrating man in football
right. there.
In terms of the sheer joy it brought me
then Larsson scoring Celtic's 4th in the 6-2 old firm game - he scored plenty of better goals, but none as memorable: http://youtu.be/tp48V-HoRp8
In fact, his diving header for Sweden in Euro 2004
was a favourite as well: http://youtu.be/02HSB149Wdk
Love that guy.
no tim worth his salt
would give any other answer than THAT chip over klos when asked what his favourite goal of all time was
beckham's first goal from inside his own half
against wimbledon.
the brazil one against italy in 1970.
or any of holland's goals from the seventies. way before my time, like, but i don't think the total football dutch teams were allowed to score goals unless they were surreal moments of majestic, almost existential beauty.
I was so so so happy when Liverpool signed Maxi,
and that was largely due to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yK1YrpovZeA
ctrl+f 'Neymar'
This, obviously.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUwVvyXkElY
I've not been convinced of Neymar's apparent greatness before
and at first I thought it looked lucky but the replay indicates that it was in fact quite excellent. How he took it round the last defender...
It's just a stupid, stupid goal
I still can't believe it even though I've watched it loads of times now
Saints making Liverpool look like kids
I wasn't born, but who cares (we have never done anything remotely on this level ever since) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxyYSoblpcI
Fuck me that's good stuff.
that's winning the thread so far I think
I can't see that from here,
but I assume it's the one where no Liverpool player touches the ball for about a minute.
or this...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXb8RjGLcZk
just watched that four times in a row
Were Southampton really that good in the 70s?
there was a quiz in an england program about 5 years ago.
q which club has had the most england captains in the past 35 years?
a southampton
this is one of my favourites, le tissier vs newcastle 93...
www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzMpdLlbZm0
i'm an oxford fan, not southampton.
you could fill this whole thread with Le Tissier goals
this was the best day ever http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VY1IF3zImlY&feature=related
we were hopelessly inconsistent
but won the fa cup in '76. Playing good football again now though, jsut signed this fella as well (not the best goal on here, but it is pretty good none-the-less) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JRWjXzzxXc&feature=player_detailpage#t=448s
I've always fucking loved Van Basten's bicycle kick...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sVYl_1vmqQ
Will need to think about this, but the first international goal that comes to mind is Negrete vs Bulgaria
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUXW6tP5GAU
^ This was so, so good
Right up there with my favourites. The technique is breathtaking: control; quick one-two; have that!
Technically, it's probably nothing compared to those above. However, it raises a smile whenever I think about it, so it's my favourite.
Mr Ray Houghton vs Italy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXauYVy_dws
I've shared a football pitch with that man :D
Got to be Malcolm Blights 90m torpedo punt after the siren to beat those motherfucking silvertails Carlton.
I'm just guessing by googling youtube, so here it is (maybe) in all its 1976 glory:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0Ct1eNANdQ
Oooh, ooh, nearly forgot
Daniel Wells's midair kick from a goalsquare bounce in 2007 or so. Won goal of the year that year. Suck it up Robluvsnic, here's (possibly) the youtube footage:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mizMkb3Rtw
the comments
Why didnt he just run in for the try?
MangoBrownie 4 years
followed by a stream of abuse
resulting in "This comment has received too many negative votes show"
Lucky there's no-one in the office except me today
Because I had a good hearty laugh at that.
As predictable as it is, it would have to be Gazza against Scotland
It's a fantastic enough goal anyway, but all the more special for me given the context
Cantona vs. Sunderland <3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjQwIqkYDeo
Yes, I'm no Man Utd fan but that was a great goal.
Cantona's celebration, or lack of, tops it off.
cantona v wimbledon (?).
side-foot control and volley. that one. what a goal.
In terms of 'trying it in the playground'
Always, always this.
enjoyment wise - gascoigne v scotland
mouth open 'i cant believe he just did that' wise - henry v real madrid
actual 'this is probably the best goal really i've ever seen' - bergkamp v argentina or zidane in champions league final.
Being a Leeds fan - Both of Yeboahs
still cant decide which is best
or luckier
Heart says Yeboah's goals.
Head says Bergkamp's one (you know the one).
Michels' face says it all
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J_DwsO9bIY
prefer this van basten one

sub-thread: what's the best goal you've ever seen scored against your team?
Batistuta's screamer for Fiorentina at Old Trafford in 2000 is right up there for me, but that's mainly because I always fucking loved Batistuta. Awesome player.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tJQmVsSscE
Having said that, Darren Ambrose's goal against us in the League Cup was a beauty as well.
Probably the Ashton overhead kick, might be because I was there though
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdoM83zOHxc
Weird game, that goal got an ovation from the Utd fans and Tevez scored and got an ovation from the West Ham fans
can't remember ANY goals against arsenal at all. theres probably a barcelona one in there somewhere.
Always felt Bosnich should've done better with that one.
Ambrose's is amazing.
Henry's volley against us, and Ribery's volley that put us out of the CL a couple of years ago are up there.
I like volleys.
BATIGOOOOOL!!
Man, Batistuta was an absolute hero; Football Italia was always more exciting when Fiorentina were playing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGVuEj-LAC0&feature=related
Bergkamp scored the best hatrick I've ever seen against Leicester
The third is probably the pick of them:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0Qnm5UP7A0
Not enough gets made of how mental that was
Weren't two of his three goals in injury time or something?
No, it was 2-1 Arsenal going in to injury time
Finished 3-3 as we equalised twice. Incredible.
probably Robben's, as heartbreaking as it was :(
that or Henry's chip over Barthez
scholes at valley parade
obv
Robin Van Persie at The Valley (I wasn't there)
Henry at Highbury, the backheel (I *was* there!)
Special mention to Patrick Berger, then of Portsmouth
This goal Le Tissier scored against Blackburn
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mj42ua8LHpU
Definitely this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_kbJURsfzU
the bastard
One of my faves:
Linus Hallenius for Hammarby http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoPhnunY0dU
This is an absolute peach, too:
Eric Hassli for Vancouver Whitecaps http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8Vfdx7LEh4
oh my days that was incredible
seattle sounders have a horrible looking kit
get your own back gunk green.
First goal from the first live match i ever went to...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0LZbyccHow
no mention yet of that one from Northern Ireland last season
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzAZTdyOXcA
gourcuff goal when he played for bourdeux
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdVzzvMEG08
exceptionelle. exceptionelle.
Zut alors!
best solo goal of the past few seasons, probably
One of my favourites - Simon Cox v Walsall
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qy0YuNuPrhw
But if we're talking about my 'favourite' goal ever
i.e. the one that brings me the most joy, probably this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ds0wEBKuxv8
On that basis it's probably this one from 1998 from The Ghost
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6n0SUeER-8
This fantastic piece of thinking is in the sidebar
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZFgrW7LrQE
Not only was I at this game, I was in line with the shot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roHkLcqHv3g
Liverpool
these two made me jump around like an idiot despite the fact that neither are winning goals in the strictest terms
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhvtUUe_U4c
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vD80XYD1FvU
Oh my goodness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhdSdGfbBow

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UlPrWnXlqs
second comment is nice too
Gerrard in the final against West Ham.
There will be a minimum of three minutes of added tiGERRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARD
1. Clive Allen
a. How unlikely. b. How brilliant. c. The deadpan, even desultory celebration http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUX0hR-3bmM
2. Thierry Henry. Outrageous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqRiqXJRYww
3. Darlington Nagbeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=2naoSiNRQ1w
JUNINHO
the man was just... incredible. only my third ever boro game, right behind the goal with me dad. a perfect example of the little this goal is a mark of the little fella's ball control and vision, unrivaledin the PL at the time (fuck off zola.) if he'd have played for man utd or liverpool he'd be remembered worldwide, but he signed for little old middlesbrough. fucking genius.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ingVKs58-EA#t=2m31s
JEREMY GOSS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4Ql6oD2ukU
Jimmy Fucking Glass
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KejwqhLDeOs
Not connected at all but it's hard to deny this wasn't one of the best moments in football.
A couple of largely forgotten goals I love
Nelinho's extraordinary curler in the 1978 WC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8UkwirffjQ
David Ginola's kickups: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRbwdVb6vrA
probably not my favourite
but Grafite's wondergoal against Bayern is up there
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rD3UkR3cmFA
Wonder strike!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PoDyypJPQM
Comes out to ESSSSSSIIIIEN!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWNGrCWfnJk&feature=related
All day. It probably would have been this one though if the game hadn't ended how it did:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTTVC-9WCik&feature=related
<3 Essien
this is a tad nostalgic really,
but it really is still one of the best goals I've ever seen, I think that I was like 7 or 8 at the time, the place went fucking mental:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxCD1D2I8cQ&t=5m18s
currently second in the thread behind the Soton goal
because the move began with the keeper doing THAT
This Justin Fashanu goal I've only just seen for the first time:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owCt1dGrK2E
That.
YEAH NORWICH
makes that Macheda goal look shite
