Is my colleague winding me up?

meowington [Edit] [Delete] 53 replies 16:50, 9 January '12

She says that City of London is like Vatican City and it has its own flag. Is this true?

I assumed it was a clear and definite wind-up. It's sort of true...

  • It does indeed have a flag

It's also twinned with Berlin - I assume that Berlin reckoned they were getting twinned with London, not just a square mile.

        • Tell her you needed a passport to get into Pimlico during World War II 'cos of all the government offices there and see how she reacts.

          • They made a documentary film about it...

    • She's now winding you up.

      theguywithnousername @meowington | 9 Jan '12, 17:02 | X
  • Essentially

The city of london is the old medieval part of London. It has been recognised as such for centuries and centuries, and has long had special laws with regards to trade etc, which is probably one of the reason so many FS companies are still based there.

The surrounding boroughs and towns became known as London as the city expanded.

    • Don't mention concrete FFS.

You'll set marckee and thewza off.

      meowington @meths | 9 Jan '12, 17:03 | X
  • Yes, kind of.

The City Of London (the Square Mile around St Paul’s, Bank, Liverpool Street etc) and The City Of Westminster are the two cities contained within Greater London. Westminster has kind of been subsumed as a London Borough, but the City exists in something of a halfway state. It’s run by the Corporation Of London, who also own land and estates outside of the Square Mile (eg Epping Forest). Most cities, and most boroughs have their own flags or crests, so this doesn’t necessarily make the City in itself unique, but it’s often treated more like a county, for example, and most visibly, having a police force separate from the Met.

why arent the vatican in the olympics then brainiacs?

    meths | 9 Jan '12, 17:09 | X
    • The pope would never get the 100m qualifying time.

      hip_young_gunslinger @meths | 9 Jan '12, 17:11 | X
    • It’s actually because of a theological reason.

Catholics regard the Pope as God’s representative on earth. If he was to enter a race and fail to win (which, against Usain Bolt, he almost certainly would do), it would prove that God is not infallible, and Christianity would collapse.
