This irks me on myriad levels.
I can now add their politics to the list of things I hate about them.
* Martin's objection to the euro is straightforward. He contends that a single currency cannot succeed without a single government. This is because differences in wealth across the continent are so immense that a single interest rate is unsustainable. Currencies only work within nations, he says, because governments use taxation to mitigate regional inequalities. *
Pretty prescient? Also:
* He takes exception to the level of national debate on the subject. -We've had an anti-intellectual attitude towards it. People have adopted an emotional, tribal, political attitude towards it, rather than analysing it in depth.- *
I dunno, maybe he's just some flag-waving chump that owns some pubs.
are marked with exactly the kind of emotional/tribal attitude he decries there.
I'm invoking the last line getout.
The letters page, and Tim Martin's editorials, and magnificently barmy.
I think Weatherspoons is trying to solve the middle east crisis.
how Trading Standards sending in underage drinkers to test pubs was the same as police entrapment and should be stopped. It was quite interesting.
Mainly I like the letters.
First of all, may I say how much I enjoy supping a fine ale at one of your fantastic pubs. During my 30-year-marriage to her indoors, we have visited more than 500 Wetherspoons and love nothing more than a good-value meal in your fine establishment. However, last month at the Dog & Horse Manure in Kettering, we were very upset when my plate of ham, egg and chips had a very skimpy pile of potatoes. What are you going to do about it?
Thanks for taking the time to write! I'm glad to hear you're a fan of our ales - I'll have to join you some time! I've spoken to the lads in Kettering and they said your sorry portion was a mistake and won't be happening again! We believe in good portions along with our good pints!
Keep England English!
wasn't the Wetherspoon fella a massive supporter of the Euro?
You've got that totally back to front, son.
As you were.
And he put some UKIP postcards in his pubs.....on the same day Wetherspoons became one of the first UK business to accept euros
No one is gonna buy anything. How are they producing it?
Boris Christmas Bundle!
Anything with a Boris logo on it sells really quite well.
Behind the bar, cleaning the pubs etc etc
after having it
If his criticism hadn’t included the expansion of the EU into eastern Europe and the freeing up of border controls and working visas.
I have a grudging respect for your levels of trolling - every post of yours on this forum is intended as a wind-up
he'd use the illegals, for even less outlay.
Being a woolly lefty is too much like hard work, I'm going Tory.
I'll get you some hummous too while Im at it
...he actually seems like a pretty decent fella the Wetherspoons chap. I like him.
This pint malarkey is a step too far mind.
I think this is a silly step and, as was said up thread, the kind of jingoistic tub-thumping silliness that's pretty unhelpful but generally he puts his views on Europe more reasonably and clearly than most anti-Europe (and indeed pro-Europe) commentators. I don't agree with him on it but I do respect his ability to put forward an argument.
That's value I can get behind.
Thought it was pretty common knowledge.
Also drinking in one of his pubs is hardly bankrolling the Taliban is it
According to the information I have gleaned from American drama shows like 24 and Sleeper Cell, the terrorist cells could be anywhere and comprise of anyone
