Straight back into Middle Earth, hardly seems like I've been away. Looks amazing.
That said, some of the effects there look a bit fake, a problem I had with some of the WETA stuff on LOTR too.
I wonder if they'll re-release LOTR after with updated Gollum effects on the first one and with Hobbit footage in place of the flashback?
LOTR is a great book but its story is far too sprawling and requires far too much sense of space and time to make a good film really.
The Hobbit's a nice, simple story, episodic and clever.
As to the effects, there are loads of dodgy shots in that trailer.
so it's TWO 3-hour boreathons, the first of which won't have anything near to a proper ending.
(I'll probably still go see it)
Then you dont understand friendship, loyalty, companionship and selflessness. I for one, have pity for you.
They're not perfect but I love the three films, can't wait for this.
i know it's easier to sneer and what have you, but i liked the other LOTR films. This looks shoddy ( although it is on a tiny screen and nowhere near finished i know) Gandalf looks ... odd... and that bit where they start singing and all stand up looks fist eatingly embarrassing.
I'd love to bang an elfin Blanchett.
It's not a long book. The trailer makes clear that it's going to be padded out with computer generated orchestral scenic shots and beardy men singing shit songs.
Can we start the betting for what the second one will be called, or have they announced it? "The Hobbit part deux: An Exercise in Audience Tolerance".
the hunt for gollum and all that jazz
It'll be called "The fall of the Necromancer" or something
This has to mean he's in the second movie, which means they're going to drag it out.
Theres plenty of material for two films if theyre adding in other stories based at the same time.
this is just the first trailer so it's understandable it doesn't include much beyond the first bit of the book.
Effects: They'll be perfecting these right up until the release date I'm sure.
No Smaug: It's a trailer. Not even that really, it's a teaser. I'm sure Smaug will appear in both parts.
Oh noes it's been split into two films: Boo fucking hoo. The LOTR films were fucking wonderful. I'd happily watch 10 films of that shit.
I.e. Rivendell and the like. This is why I was surprised at how bad they looked: It shouldn't be stuff they're still perfecting.
My comment on the first LOTR film was about Gollum mainly, as they were still perfecting him, hence he's not really quite right in that small scene compared to the other two.
They're probably not recycling anything CGI wise. Sure they'll have reference points but the effects will be totally new, being made with new programmes, and they'll be rendering like mad right up until the film comes out. If they're still dodgy when the film comes out I will happily stand corrected.
And it depends on what detail they rendered originally.
In general I'd expect they still have all the wireframes there and maybe they'll have given them more points to smooth even more but it's more likely just higher res rendering and textures from the same basic models.
However, these Rivendell effects look WORSE than they did in the LOTR films, which is my point. This is the the Windows Vista of improvements as it stands.
Rivendell looked shit, really bad waterfalls, etc.
