Who is this vile woman and why should anyone listen to what she has to say?
last year and that mobile phone shop this week reopened as a hairdressers. And someone I follow on Twitter has just said she is a consultant for Westfield. Hmm...
...the fact that she basically single-handedly transformed Harvey Nichols.
She is a knobhead, but she does have a proven track record.
I look forward to Jeremy Clarkson's forthcoming review of our transport policy.
But that's clearly not the same thing as I just said, is it?
Personally I think she's great. I'm not sure why you think she's a knobhead. I just wonder how much asking her to do this report was about using popularity.
But it is actually her area of expertise.
Running a shop might be her area of expertise, but it’s telling that just about all her recommendations are the kind of things that planners have been advocating for several decades.
But don't you think there was a large chunk of popularity on telly about this?
Anyway, I should read the full report as a lot of the soundbites in news just sound a bit 'obvious' in terms of ideas to save the highstreet.
And the government has decided that Alan Sugar was such a resounding success at getting policies aimed at nurturing a country of entrepreneurs that another telly person was the best option.
Philip Green didn't do so well when the government employed him to tell them what they were doing wrong because he hadn't been on telly so much.
you know. because. of the thing
but that don't impress me much. A skilled visual merchandiser =/= economics, commerce, planning, e-commerce expert.
Getting a television personality, albeit one with a background in retail, to speak to other professionals who have done all the hard work, and then publish a report, means that it’s much less likely to be dismissed by the British press and public.
called Mary's Living and Giving and has raised A LOT of money for charity.
Yea, she's a right knob 'ead that lezza.
a powerful one, no doubt, and I am sure that the shop will get lots of the better items donated to it. But I think that the criticism of her is probably one that I would share.....not a personal criticism, but one that she inherits due to her posting, and, well, the fact that overall her suggestions to 'increase high street footfall (christ i hate that term)' are not the best ones.
some of them might work, but they are very passive and do not attack the competition (and you can bet that the competition (big retailers) have very much targeted the high street sales
one of her suggestions sounded so mild and weak (when compared to Tesco behemoth say offering their various financial services as well)
was this "If we had gyms in high street then this would increase footfall"......yeah right, I can really imagine that working.....(not her fault shes been given a remit by gov and she is probably not allowed to say the sort of things that i would campaign for in her place.........like .....if tescos superstores cause major disruption to the areas they are built in (our local one does) then a levy reflecting the disruption to traffic/journey times etc will be placed on them and this levy/taxation/fines will be passed on by the council to provide cheap in town parking (to help increase the tyrefall as well as the footfall)...or else use the levy/tax, to offer free or reduced rates for high street businesses (according to the catagory of the business)
there are hundreds of things that can be done, but Mary's gentle encouraging is not going to be as effective as hardnosed changing the retail playing field.....of course one thing that will change things will be people not being able to use their cars as much thus necessitating the use oig tyhe high streeet more
whilst also loosening restrictions on new car-orientated developments outside of existing towns
GOOD ONE THAT IS YES
to give the lie that the gov is trying to reverse the trend of big marts out of high street, when it is obvious from other actions that they do not care about this.........the problem is Mary Portas is the gov's 'feint' with their magicians left hand, whilst they do the real business with their right hand...if the majority follow the feint then that is all that matters.
Mary Portas would truly show her metal if in her position she criticises the easy planning regulation that the big marts get.
