I personally really love the idea that we just don't bother with this.
Literally fill a stadium full of the world's most (self) important people, turn the lights out for a bit then turn them back on to reveal Boris stood in the centre of the stadium wearing a last night at the Proms hat.
He'd probably say something profound like 'Er, ladies and gentleman and ladies... welcome... to Eton... no Londoninium! Games on!'
Then he'd light a sparkler.
It'd be better than a load of Morris dancers. And save us about £5 million.
