DiS 11-a-side football // Sunday 27 November // 4 PM
Whittington Park Football Pitch
Holloway Road
N19 4RS
www.aquaterra.org/whittington-park-football-pitch
Last regular game of the season. This is the one that decides the golden boot, and it is the final opportunity to go for the limelight and impress the judges for our annual DiS Awards. I need more suggestions for the comedy awards by the way (http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/social/4309016).
Bar the rematch against Mama FC, there will be no games in December. Not even 5-a-side. Go and do something Christmassy instead, stuff the turkey and yourself and then run it all off during the double-game month of January. See below for details.
The usual blurb:
- we play on a full-sized astro-turf pitch
- there are brand new changing and toilet facilities
- 5 min walk from Archway tube station (Northern line)
- 1 min walk from Upper Holloway train station (Barking - Gospel Oak line)
- Buses 17, 43 and 271 all stop at Upper Holloway train station
- arrive at 3:30 PM for warm-up, tactics discussion, pre-match fags, team pictures, etc.
- kick-off at 4 PM sharp
- full 2 x 45 minutes and injury time + 15 min break
- one team will play in red shirts, the other in blue
- everyone can participate, the skills on display are wide-ranging
- final teams will be announced in the week leading up to the game
- 5 pounds each will be collected on the day
- post-match analysis in the Landseer pub on Landseer Road (5 mins walk away)
Come on, you know you want to. Put your name down by replying below.

i'm sure i speak for everyone here, but i have some suggestions:
dan_thw to play an entire half in goal.
dan_thw to be called offside everytime he recieves the ball in the opposition half.
dan_thw to be fouled on and off the ball at all times.
tunde to be allowed to waltz through to an open goal any time he has the ball.
tunde to be passed the ball by the opposition wherever possible.
*dan_thw to play the entire game dressed as santa claus
Every goal dan_thw scores to be referred to a 'Dubious Goals' panel consisting of:
Tunde
clouds of local kids to swarm around dan_thw, chanting various nicknames, whenever he gets the ball
memo to self: some on bikes?
*blown for offside/foul.
any goals he manages to actually get should result in him getting booked for too exuberant a celebration, even if he just shakes someones hand.
* sent off
Maybe when (if) he scores
the goalie should just take a goal kick and everyone should play on as if nothing happened.
:D
The last two were definitely rules which seemed to apply in the previous game
:D
Serious award suggestion:
Think we should reinstitute 'Most improved player' or have some sort of 'Unsung Hero' award, if only to console meths when he fails to win player of the year yet again.
i'll be happy with 'shittest at getting injured' or whatever awart is made up to take the piss out of me.
Most likely to get cramp
Crampiest throat of the year
Ooh I've thought of another good award:
Worst Dan
too close to call.
Dan's side should play a 1-1-2-2-1-2-1-1 formation
Tunde's a 1-0-0-10
How many times did you count that to make sure it added up to 11?

You gloss over the fact that despite scoring a respectable amount of goals
my finishing was absolutely terrible. I literally could have scored about 40 if I'd been shooting properly! I guess the goals are bigger in 11 a side though so more would have gone in if the goals were that big.

I bet you're looking at this defence and thinking 'I'm never getting past that back 4'...
I'm looking at the teams and thinking they are very well balanced

Does anyone else think that the subs' benches look stronger than the starting XIs?
yep
Apart from meths though, right?
Red bench is pretty scary.
What manager wouldn't want that kind of talent to call upon?
can we arrange for a camera to pan across those four
and pay a commentator to make that "you know you're in trouble when those are the names on the BENCH" remark they always make? I will pay up to £5
whilst we're there can we arrange for the same camera to pan
across the blues subs bench and pay a commentator to say "and here are the last two players of the year. Who will be the third?" before quickly skimming over the others and just pointing at a dog or something in the background
Keep your money.
I'll just give Andy Gray a call and promise him some buns.

I wanted Tunde and Dan to be on the same team, the one playing against me.
Sorry Dan
Operation Tunde for the whores golden slipper
Weather forecast for Sunday
11°C and sunny at 3 PM, falling to 3°C at night. Sunset is 2 minutes before kick off, so expect it to cool off fairly rapidly. Wrap up while you're on the subs bench.
Thanks Mum!

Probably not going to be back in time- problems with the in-laws. Annoying, as I was looking forward to this! Balls.
exciting game, eh?
I like the bit when Jake scored a hattrick.

was a very entertaining game. Thought the Reds outplayed us for large parts of the game but some great defending with the defence, midfield and keeper all throwing their bodies in front of the ball meant we were well in the game.
Also loved the fact that the Tunde v Dan golden boot battle ebbed and flowed throughout until the very end.
Funny game this.
Reds dominated possession and play, and yet Blues looked more dangerous throughout. It says something for our backline that all bar one of the Reds’ goals came from outside the area. We only really started to struggle in the last twenty minutes or so when the Reds put enough people up front to occupy our back four and then broke with midfielders making late runs. Bit annoyed that we let it slip in the final few minutes, to be honest. But not as annoyed as dan_thw when I suggested that he wasn’t going to pass to anyone.
Ah well.
Sorry about the goal from the corner as well – I thought I had it, then thought that Will had it, then I lost it and then I punched it into my own net.
Both my goals were from inside the box
both times after a mazy run making a couple of players fall on their arses. Cheers!
Your defence did play well though, especially Alex - even if his marking bordered on sexual assualt at times.
I thought your first was just inside and the second was just outside. I dunno.
I don't think I hit a shot within 20 yards of the goal from outside the box
I have a massive welt on my left shin.
Can't remember who did it, but thanks!
My bum hurt last night
But its ok now. Maybe this fact and the game were unconnected.
I think I need to employ my own ball boy to collect my shots. God bless the high fence. Even that didn't stop some of them. However I wish people would stop overlooking my wonderful array of passing. Put your contacts in next time Marckee - might also mean you can see those corners before they go in!
Meths was man of the match for a commanding midfield display both defensively and offensively, but special mention to Jake "25 Yarder" Salmon for some precision long range shooting.
Reds 6 - Blues 4
2 - 3 at half time, and Blues go 2 goals ahead with less than 20 mins remaining on the clock. How did they lose that?

through some of the worst officiating ever seen on a pitch ever
also I'd like to nominate a new award for the thing next week
The on a hatrick and through on goal but still pass to Tunde in order to scupper Dan's chances of the goldenboot award.
^late contender for the "Moaniest Bastard" award?
I think I've left it a little too late really, you have to put the moany
hard work in throughout the year.
There were some very dubious and downright wrong calls but that is part of the rich tapestry of DiS football.
Also I can play the first hour or so of the match on Saturday if you're struggling for players.
Don't give up hope
If you really go for it, you could still have a chance.
6-5, actually.
I think.
Nope
Are you sure?
We went 4-2 up, then you came back, then I’m certain we scored one against Ken, who was only in goal for the last ten minutes or so.
Ken only conceded one
He performed heroics in goal
That's what I mean.
We were 4-2 up before he went in goal.
Jack kept a clean sheet
There were no goals in the first 25 mins of the second half.
So who did we score our two second half goals against?
It was 2-2 at half time.
we scored 3 in the first half
Did we?
Oh.
It was 3-2 at half time
Two goals from Jim, one from Tunde. One from me, one from Jake.
Pretty gutted
At one point we were a goal away from killing the game, didn't get it and suffered for it. The Reds played superbly, although I think we underperformed as a team which helped them. Having said that, our defence was largely excellent in restricting genuine chances for the Reds. Didn't help that meths actually played well, didn't hear him swear to himself once the whole game.
Anyway, thoroughly frustrating game and yes, I did flounce off in a strop at the end, luckily Arthur remembered to pick up my ball.
Jake was clear MotM for an exceptional all-round display
But Meths was in imperious form and not far behind. Thought we played some cracking passing football at times.
Jake had a blinder yesterday
as did a lot of the Red team. For my part, I was quite disappointed to concede that lob when I was in net. Almost kept a clean sheet (for about 20 mins). I would have liked to settle in at centre mid as I thought the team was pretty stable at half time and we were pretty much in control. We ended up a bit gappy in the 2nd half and just knackered as a whole in the last ten mins.
Tie between Tunde (Stealthy) and Dan (dan_thw)
15 goals each
I'm studying the FIFA rule book as we speak
I didn't know it was a tie
interesting.
I think I scored about 6, probably best to just give it to me.
Dan would win it by virtue of playing less games, no?
I think that's what happens.
It's more complicated than that
...
If there is more than one player with the same amount of goals, the tie-breaker goes to the player who has contributed the most assists (with the FIFA Technical Study Group deciding whether an assist is to be counted as such). If there is still more than one player, the tie-breaker goes to the player who has played the least amount of time.
Oh
On Football Manager, it just goes to the player who's played the least games. I agree though, we shouldn't do that.
Well obviously we should just share the award
But if you're looking for reasons to give it to me, I played far fewer games this season and I'd hazard a guess that my assist count is a little higher too.
Also I invented the trick.
You have to pass the ball to get an assist...
Yes very funny ha ha etc.
Hey dan
I hear you went on Mastermind and you did really really well, no passes at all!!! etc
No passes, but a lot of my answers were long shots
...
The trick (patent pending)
Dan gets the award mondays, wednesdays and fridays
Tunde gets it tuesdays, thursdays and saturdays
Alternating sundays.
Didn't really enjoy that much to be honest
Took two hours of replacement buses to get to and from it, had a mild asthma attack first half then ended up in my least favoured position of goal for the part of the game that happily coincided with 25 minutes of solid red dominance.
One goal was my fault, but thankfully it didn't really matter by then as we would have still lost anyhow.
Not sure why the Blues thought we played well to be honest. No offense meant, but our defense spent the first half arguing about where to hold the line, shouting at each other and barely getting any support. Playing on the wing was thankless too, with Jack, Jake, Meths and Henrik just pinging it around for fun with absolutely no one to help tackle at times. It was one of those inevitable games where it just felt like the Reds goals were coming all game to me.
Everyone worked hard and put in a good shift, but we were so out of shape, lacking a spine and nothing much came off. We didn't shout hard enough for decisions either or impose ourselves. At times, there wasn't a single bit of movement or option in midfield and it was one of those games where if we went forward, we had no-one but if we tracked back, we had no-one.
In all honesty, if Dan hadn't taken a shot every time he'd got the ball we'd have lost that game about 9-4.
That's not to take away from some great Reds performances though. Ken in goal was the only one of the games' 17 goalies who didn't put a foot wrong (Jack doesn't count as he didn't have to do anything bar some press ups), Jake was fantastic, meths was brilliant too and scored a peach.
No sour grapes, it just never really got going from my perspective.
Again, its probably just banter
But I didn't shoot every time I got the ball. There were honestly only two or three instances where I shot where a pass might have been a better option for the situation I was in, and I aplogise for those, but I remember the stuff I did in the game and I played no differently this game than in any other, the only difference was that my shooting in this one was worse than usual.
I played at least five or six, probably more final balls that could quite easily have resulted in goals, but as your defence was playing so deep, balls through the defence were difficult and me, meths, jake, jack, chris, we all overhit quite a few due to the lack of space, so shooting from distance was usually the better option - as demonstrated by Jake's two goals and Meths' goal. Both had very good games but also missed a few speculative shots, wasn't just me!
What?!
I think I had one other shot from distance!
I certainly didn't try shooting on the spin from 25 yards with my weaker foot. Fair comment about a shot being the best option sometimes though - it was all quite congested at times.
I don't have a weaker foot!
:D
they're both like toblerones
FUCKING TASTY
nice
(It was just banter)
while playing up front
there was a nice moment when i felt like Alan Partridge - as the keeper was rushing out to block Dan and i was in front of an empty goal hoping for a little pass, shouting "DAN! DAN! DAN!" to no avail..
Also: Liquid football!!
I agree
Meths should definitely have passed you the ball there!
...
Good game.
us reds played some real good passing football at times. Some cracking goals I thought from the bald guy playing up front for the blues, meths and of course Jake.
Meths was great in the centre for the whole game - but I was suprised he was getting so much space... Lee at centre back in the second half was also pretty solid (LEE'S BALL!)
I hate to say it
but I thought Henrik had a really good game, barely let anything through to our defense, and kept possession really well. Smee had a great game too. There were some really good passing moves for reds, and I think that pressure eventually told. Joe and Edd were really tough to play past at the start, but I think the never ending supply of reds midfielders meant we could have a rest on the bench or at fullback (hiya!) and let someone else take over.
Quite interesting seeing how the game panned out, it was obvious where each sides strengths were - reds had a lot of midfielders (as mentioned) and could hold onto the ball well, but we lacked a bit up front, whereas blues had a lot les of it, but I was worried whenever the ball ended up with Jim, James or Tunde.
Loved Jim passing to Tunde for a tap in, despite being on a hattrick.
I do not advise drinking the best part of a bottle of port on top of usual saturday night boozing the evening before a football game.
Yeah, we'll done and that
But where the bloody hell are my glasses? :D
My phone has exchanged he'll for we'll.
What the he'll are you doing in a football thread?
I gave them to Mark, I think he needs them more than yourself.
They're still on my mantlepiece. That's right, I've got a mantelpiece. IN YOUR FACE.
We struggled for wingers (we had James and er...me) and attack-minded players in general
so we tried to play narrower with a mind to keeping possession and playing in Jim and Tunde. The fact that you had at least three 'proper' wingers plus extras who could fill in was a pain in the arse to be honest. There were often huge gaps in your midfield but we were a bit too happy to just blast it up to the strikers so we failed to exploit them. But as I said earlier, apart from the joke ending we were only ever one goal away from sealing the win, we just bodged it.
i'm sure i hoofed it less than usual..
a lot of restarts and 50-50's came straight back to us all game, which forced us deep at the back and made a lot of space which the two dan's and jake were very good at exploiting. not much that could be done about it but it felt like we rarely had a settled midfield, which really showed as people tired in the 2nd half as sean said, there were very few options and a lot of red runs not being picked up.
good people - meths was in his creative pomp. jake was really difficult to play against and i was very glad when he left the right wing. edd and mark both solid for us, adam had some good spells as well, especially on the left early in the game.
good hits for the red's later goals, but could have been very different without self-confessed reluctant keepers.
I spent a good deal of yesterday afternoon being sick.
Soz.
