Problems with distorted sound in Windows Media Player

keith [Edit] [Delete] 8 replies 13:03, 10 November '11

I'm in the process of using WMP to burn my CD collection into MP3 format. Some of the songs/ albums are distorting like fuck when I play them back. It's not happening all the time though: Sky Valley by Kyuss is fine but Muchos Gracias isn't.

I'm not very soft/ hardware-literate and therefore am struggling to work out the problem so I can find out how to fix it.

Can anyone help?

    Cementimental this'd this
  • What bit rate are you ripping it to

And is it mp3 or wma? I think wmas have issues with distortion generally. If you are ripping stuff, I'd use CDex or something to be honest.

    • I'm ripping into MP3 at 256 Kbps

Is that the unit of bit rate? It's about 3/4 of maximum quality.

  • That should be fine, 320 is the max.

So to sum up - fuck knows. It is definitely just some of the ones you are ripping, or are random mp3s you've downloaded also distorting?

  • have you got the volume of the media player set to max, and the pc volume set to not much (or vice versa)?

that kind of thing can sometimes explain it (but, admittedly, not why some stuff plays back ok, and other stuff not, assuming you've not changed the vol levels between playback).

    • (and/or have you got the media player equalizer levels whacked up to max?)

  • I don't think it's the EQ as I've switched it off.

I've mistakenly loaded files onto my MP3 player and had the same problem. It's only about four albums that do it (the Kyuss best of mentioned above, the two Run the Road comps that 679 released and one other one I can't remember.) It sounds like the music is being played at high volume down a crackly phone line or walkie-talkie. All of them are being ripped from official copies. Everything else I've ripped works fine.

I've played with volume levels on the laptop and WMP to no avail.

Thanks for help thus far guys.
