Live Action Akira Remake gets a director of no real note (GEEK-CENTRIC)
Normally I couldn't give a rat's chuff about this sort of thing, but I like Akira, I like the Anime, I like the Manga and I like the idea of a live action remake of either. Various names have been bandied about for years and it occasionally pops up with a new director, a new famous person backing it, and it's been mentioned a few times in the last year.
I'd started to ignore news about it for various reasons.
But, according to Variety, the guy who directed the 2005 House of Wax remake and the recent Neeson thriller Unknown is due to have a shot at making this work. Jaume Collet-Serra. I suspect that a no note director such as whatshisface here has been chosen so that the studio can pretty much get away with watering down the original material in any way they see fit with limited argument.
I think it's going to be a disastrous mis-step. An ill advised succession of poorly mapped CGI set pieces which don't pay much relation to either the abridged Anime adaptation or the original Manga. Probably setting it in New York or Los Angeles, not having any asian actors in it at all, chucking in the now standard extraneous child character, which means it'll be given a 'hard' PG13 rating as there'll be some facsimile of the end sequence from the anime as that's iconic enough to be left practically untouched.
At least cliffheaded munter Robert Pattinson's no longer involved.
It's a good thing I don't get angry anymore as this would boil my blood and make me unable to see properly with TEH RAGE.
TL:DR?
Fair enough. Here's a short version.
Comic book movie remake will be shit, SURPRISE!
