have you got your central heating on yet?

colon_closed_bracket [Edit] [Delete] 75 replies 11:36, 21 October '11

i mean, not right at this moment but in the evening. some people see it as some kind of badge of honour not to have it on until like December or something. are you one of those people?

  • My housemates had it on for the first time last night.

House was like a bloody sauna when I got home. Turned my radiator down though and my room was comfortable.

  • i kicked it on on Wednesday

would be toasty but all the radiators need a good bleeding

    No, my wife's not.

Our place is incredibly well insulatef so the battle won't commence for a couple of weeks yet.

  • refusing to put it on until November

my flat's ceilings are really high and it's really draughty so it doesn't make a massive amount of difference anyway. I've discovered that sitting under blankets is a much more effective way of staying warm...

  • Love this thread

I usually try to hold out til the clocks go back, but I could see my breath in my sitting room last night so had to give it a quick blast.

    Stupid lovely bay windows :(

    Royter-Hatfood | 21 Oct '11, 11:41 | X
  • It doesn't seem right to do it before the clocks change, earliest.

No real logic behind that though. Luckily my flat's pretty well insulated so I don't need it much anyway.

    DaisyFlower | 21 Oct '11, 11:42 | X
    • my house has no cavity walls (so no cavity wall insulation) and single-glazed windows at the front (silly conservation area)

so there's no way we could do without the heating now.

  • at my old flat: its nowhere near time.

at my mums house: OF COURSE. its the coldest house in the world. none of the rooms have curtains, and the front door is constantly wide open.

    • None of the rooms have curtains?

      Your mother is a MONSTER.

      cheers

      Darcy @meths | 21 Oct '11, 11:48 | X
      • she's insane.

actually HER bedroom has curtains and is the warmest room in the house. i have the choice between the room with decent heating but the massive unprotected window, or the cold room with the two small velux windows.

        • ignore my post below...

          MONSTER!

Having said that alot of rooms in my folks place didn't have curtains for YEARS. But not the bedrooms though.

  • My housemates turned the heating on about three weeks ago.

I came home to find it sweltering, so I turned it off and left a note on the boiler to keep the heating off until it’s actually cold.

I came home the next day to find two of them sat in the lounge in their coats, hats and scarves, while I’d been walking around outside in a t-shirt.

I wore a suit jacket to work for the first time yesterday. I’ll admit that it was a bit too chilly for just a shirt.

and why I make myself look rude on a train by always picking the aisle seat.

They make me feel physically sick.

it baffles me that some people actually have to consult the calendar before making these decisions

And I was thinking about it yesterday.

I haven't yet, which surprises me because I did it really early last year. In fact, I still have my bedroom window wide open. I have been wearing a bit more around the flat though. I can hold out a while yet I think.

or getting away with it for another month. It's not a challenge, you don't get rewarded for being a frost bitten catweazel. If it's cold put the heating on.

      • True.

But the people who reach for the thermostat at the slightest hint of a chill are probably the ones who waltz around in a t-shirt and no socks/slippers and whine about energy bills. Slipping into a jumper is free, y'all.

        • yep people who complain about the cold at the slightest hint of a chill

are indeed as annoying as the central heating warriors. If it gets to the stage where I have to put jumpers and thicker clothes on indoors just to stay warm then I'm putting the heating on.

Me and one of my housemates seem to be warmer than the other 3, and when we get cold we'll put a jumper or something on.

The clocks change thing was a compromise, but it was just an arbitrary date - if we get colder before then we'll stick it on.
