NO iPhone 5 yet

Yesiamaduck [Edit] [Delete] 34 replies 20:53, 4 October '11

just a new iPhone 4.... I bet a lot of apple devotes are well disappointed, to be honest so am I, I'm always interested to see what innovations apple pimp out but for it's just a faster iPhone with a better camera. BOOOORING (though I'm sure it'll be a awesomely powerful phone)

  • I'm as guilty of smartphone nerdery as anyone

But the part of my mind that remembers 10 years ago still has an odd reaction to the concept of an "awesomely powerful phone"

    Epimer | 4 Oct '11, 20:55 | X
  • I think they should leave longer gaps

other wise you get in a situation where you dont want to commit to a phone with a 2 year contract to pay for it for fear of a better model coming out

    ThingsThatFly | 4 Oct '11, 20:56 | X
  • not gonna be able to get a decent contract phone until summer 2013

so hopefully something particularly mindblowing will be out by then.

gotta be a different league of boring human being to read liveblogs of these conferences though

  • How many fucking iPhones do you people need?

    Icarus-Smicarus | 4 Oct '11, 21:20 | X
  • Surely its an iPhone 5 in all but name?

what else where you expecting? faster processor, much better camera and video, new operating system, voice recognition etc. though having said all that I wont be getting one...

    mail1234 | 4 Oct '11, 21:30 | X
    • Me? Not much

I just get news forwarded to my HTC, I don't really go for Apple products due to their treatment of existing customers. I saw it and thought I'd report back as I'm sure people who use this site are interested.

      Yesiamaduck @mail1234 | 4 Oct '11, 21:39 | X
      • how do you mean existing customers?

their apple care is pretty aweseom.

  • OH NO MY NEW PHONE HAS THE WRONG NUMBER AT THE END

    chanticleer | 4 Oct '11, 21:38 | X
  • M contract is up in May so I'll probably hold out for the inevitable 5

That said the voice thing looks cool (if it real works) and the OS has some nifty bits.
    What can I say I'm a fanboy :)

    the-breacher | 4 Oct '11, 21:50 | X
    • nothing to be proud of, mate

      joeydubya @the-breacher | 4 Oct '11, 22:29 | X
      • I don't feel pride or glee

Am just one of many people happy with their phone. I don't get the worship or the hatred that apple instil, whatever works for whoever.

        the-breacher @joeydubya | 4 Oct '11, 22:53 | X
  • Don't get the hype

The Samsung Galaxy S2 is like having a little widescreen telly in your hands, you can run emulators off it, yet to hear a convincing argument against it.

An iPhone is just a glorified iPod touch that drops calls, costs twice as much and has less capacity.

    joeydubya | 4 Oct '11, 22:30 | X
    • Do you not get annoyed

Being unable to touch anywhere on the screen with one thumb? A screen that size would just annoy me.

      crablin @joeydubya | 5 Oct '11, 09:19 | X
      justanothersheeldz this'd this
      • poofs

        joeydubya @crablin | 5 Oct '11, 09:30 | X
      • Not that I condone the Apple-baiting bullshit but my thumb can reach the whole screen easily.

        Maybe you're just malformed?

        TheoGB @crablin | 5 Oct '11, 10:02 | X
        • hey theo, i've recently got a galaxy S2

what stuff/widgets/apps should i get for it? just got the standard out of the box stuff at the mo

          mac_daddy @TheoGB | 5 Oct '11, 10:19 | X
          • Get a Flashlight app.

That's default with HTC but oddly not with the Galaxy.

Are you in London? There's something all Tube Chaser that's good and you can get good use out of the London Buses thing if you use in conjunction with http://countdown.tfl.gov.uk (The latter will give you a bus stop number you can feed into the former.)

I use the Squeezebox app on my phone. Obviously you should get WinAmp as your music player, IMO. There's a Rotton Tomatoes app you can get from their site that's useful when you're thinking about films, a Time Out one and a Guardian one.

For passing time games that are free I'd suggest
            Newton Lite
            Slice It!
            Phit Droid 2

One thing I've found is that Twitter and Gmail didn't come up as upgradable apps in the market. But when I searched on Twitter Offial and Gmail Official I found them and then was able to update to the latest versions.

            TheoGB @mac_daddy | 5 Oct '11, 10:32 | X
            • PlayerPro is a better music player than Winamp.

              Other good apps:
If you like photography then get Vignette. Camera360 is a decent, free alternative.
WidgetLocker lets you put widgets on your lockscreen and different sliders so you can instantly access apps from lockscreen.
Dolphin HD is the best browser IMO.
Speedx 3D, Dragon Fly! and Rocket Bunnies are my fave games but I also have the SNES9x EX emulator which lets me play MarioKart and Link to the Past and stuff.

        • When I used it

I couldn't do everything I wanted with one hand, which is quite key for me with a phone I might need to use whilst carrying something in the other hand..

          crablin @TheoGB | 5 Oct '11, 11:36 | X
          • You could always just put your penis down for a few minutes.

            TheoGB @crablin | 5 Oct '11, 11:42 | X
            • WOOOO

              mac_daddy @TheoGB | 5 Oct '11, 11:43 | X
  • not going to get it obviously

i have an 4 and an ipad 2. my george foreman's thinking about it though, as she has my old shitty (and cracked) 3g and it is fucking done.

    justanothersheeldz | 5 Oct '11, 09:29 | X
    • She should get the SII so you have the best of both worlds.

      :)

      TheoGB @justanothersheeldz | 5 Oct '11, 10:03 | X
      • the what?

        justanothersheeldz @TheoGB | 5 Oct '11, 10:16 | X
        • oh wait, that's roman numerals right?

we are pretty much ingrained in the apple ecosystem, so it'll be unlikely we'll ever change.

          justanothersheeldz @justanothersheeldz | 5 Oct '11, 10:17 | X
  • My contract is up in Feb

But this happened last time and I got a 3GS and like 6 months later brought out the 4. So I'm pretty hesitant to get a 4S even though my 3GS is dying only to see the 5 that like interfaces with your brain or some shit come out shortly after.

Dunno what I'm going to do to be honest

    LordLuciusBanter | 5 Oct '11, 11:02 | X
    • I seriously can't see what else they can really add to make the iPhone 5 that would be a big deal.

A new design? Not a big deal.
      Slightly smaller/larger? It's hardly a bad size.
Even faster processor? Only of interest if you spend your time playing shit-hot games.
Even better screen? Again, depends on how many films and the like you'll watch on it.
Even better camera? Who really needs even 8MP on a phone camera, let alone 12MP or whatever.
Better battery life? Okay cool but not the end of the world.
More memory for less money? Again, good but probably not going to be a game changer.

The iPhone 4 was a big leap up from previous models but I'd say it nailed it.

      TheoGB @LordLuciusBanter | 5 Oct '11, 11:14 | X
      • yeah they are reaching the limit for specs

unless you count biometric, gestures, and 3D the next things you want.

i like the Siri thing, but tbh it feels like a gimmick.

give me a better battery and we are talking.

        justanothersheeldz @TheoGB | 5 Oct '11, 11:18 | X
      • Looking at the aperture and extra lens refinements they've made up to the CCD

those extra pixels will be very handy on this device.

The extra CPU muscle when browsing the web is very, very noticeable.

But I'm with you. There's nothing so exciting to be introduced to mobile phones at this stage to warrant a full version revision yet and I believe Apple have been very sensible in holding off on that front, in the same way they were with the 3G -> 3GS -> 4

        crablin @TheoGB | 5 Oct '11, 11:40 | X
    • Yeah, but any technology like that is the same

the iPhone 4S is an exceptional phone and it will still be exceptional if the 5 is released tomorrow.

If you're upgrading from the 3GS, the difference you will experience will be incredibly profound.

      crablin @LordLuciusBanter | 5 Oct '11, 11:35 | X
      • ok, you've convinced me

        LordLuciusBanter @crablin | 5 Oct '11, 12:43 | X
  • * massive number 5

because thats the most common number
