You should always smell it before allowing them to pour. Always pisses me off when they just pour it out without a chance to check it.
I've so far never, ever been in a resturant with a group of people where there's been an issue with the wine and, should this disaster occur, I'd be perfectly capable summoning a waiter and asking them to take it back.
Frankly I want all or nothing from restaurants in this regard. Either they bring out a bit of my meal on a plate to taste before they give me the whole thing or they just abandon pretentious nonsense rituals.
thing is, the ones that just go ahead and pour are also the ones that are most likely to resist taking it back, giving you fresh glasses, etc. if it does turn out to be bad. In my experience...
But, yeah, I just enjoy a pretentious nonsense ritual.
