A petty and almost definitely stupid question about 'double or quits' in the hope of proving myself right on a petty point.
A mate of mine owes me £20 on a football bet from last season.
I'm not really that arsed about taking the money so last night I offered him the same bet again this season (Middlesboro being promoted incidentally) as a double or quits thing. I naturally meant he owed me nothing if Boro were promoted but owed me £40 if they weren't. He took it to mean that if Boro were promoted I owed him £40.
Is he being a thick or is there a second definition of double or quits used in certain parts of the country that I'm not familiar with and doesn't make much sense? I've now emailed him cancelling the bet for obvious reasons (i.e. that neither of us really agree what we're bet on) but I'm fairly sure he'll start accusing me of chickening out and I want to be 100% clear that I am right about this.
PS - I know what you're thinking reading this and I agree there's far better things I could spend my time doing.
