How many campsites?
Camping is one of those things that, for it to go smoothly, you really need a fair bit of kit already. Once you’ve got the basics (tent, sleeping bags, stove, cutlery, cool bag + blocks, swiss army knife, walking boots + socks, waterproof, rollmat, rucksack, waterbottles), it’s actually pretty cheap.
There are lots of websites listing camp sites – try to find somewhere within a mile or two of a train station from London, some hills and a river. It will be easier if you’re staying at one place, rather than having to strike camp every day and carry it with you.
If you don’t want to go on a campsite, then you may be able to find some common land that suitable. We used to camp out in the dunes of Northumberland beaches, but I don’t know of any similar areas in the south-east.
