the more he feels a part of it. Still seems to be several steps behind everyone else.
Mind you, I guess there's a small chance he's actually got something more important to be doing rather than dodging the debate? Although you'd have thought Downing Street would say what if it were the case...
which, again, creates the impression that he's neck-deep. if he wants to give the impression that he's whiter than white, this is not the way to go about it.
Emergency meeting with Ghaddafi? whoops, I mean Sarkozy ?
Not sure what for, but if there are some dying kids who have been looking forward to this day then it would be a little cruel to let them down.
which (along with his attitude throughout) is what puts me into default cynicism mode - if it were something like that, then they could quite easily say so and most reasonable people would admit that it's not a waste of his time.
to prevent the IRA or whomever from trying to bomb the shit out of him.
He should obviously be at the debate though.
but it's rarely relevant in this way. And even then I don't know that anyone (or at least many) would be interested in the minute detail of where he is, it's what the sudden engagement that's appeared since last night is regarding that's important.
they couldn't think of a specific excuse; he runs the country afterall, they have loads of things to choose from.
he's pulling out at the last minute. so your straw man has no relevance in this situation
...and his relationship with News International will be under scrutiny, then it is definitely in his best interest to attend. If he doesn't want to, that's his choice but it's a very naive thing to do.
Even Gordon Brown would have gone to this if he was PM. GORDON BROWN! And he didn't understand the meaning of populist short-term gain in the slightest...
Or do you think that they'll let some of their MPs identify themselves as pro-Murdoch?
you can be fairly sure that it's whipped.
So the diary thing is probably fabrication.
it depends on what the aforementioned diary commitments are, and from a more skeptical point of view, if said diary commitments even exist.
while it might not be a very important debate from a constitutional point of view (and i'm only taking your word for this), it's a debate on a tremendously important and current issue which has ramifications across government, the media, and the police. for him to not turn up for what are essentially unspecified reasons reflects very badly on him, i'm sure you'd agree.
CENSORED BY MURDOCH POLICE STATE
Since it's been announced that the govt will be supporting the opposition day motion. It's already been shortened from 4.5 hours to 2.5.
when he's put on the back foot. It's a pity, because if he took these sorts of things more seriously and was willing to admit fault on occasion or accept when his ideas haven't worked, then he'd be far more effective as mayor - he's already very good as an ambassador for London.
he's scheduled a photo op with Milly Dowler's family to skip out of the debate
He said he's meeting them after his statement, which he just gave, so he's probably meeting them about 1pm. The debate isn't due to start until around 4.30.
doesn't mean immediately after
...from last Friday. Before this debate was announced? Maybe.
Either way, I don't think cynicism about his going to see the Dowlers is accurate seeing as it's been on his agenda for a while, not as something which he's doing to gain some points INSTEAD of doing something else...
it only becomes an issue when we find out that DCam is being blackmailed in some way about this, which lets face it, he isn't, so it's not really that interesting, unless he really does want to distance himself from the whole thing, in which case he's even more of a completeandutterbozo than he is, and he's clearly a completeandutterbozo, a caompleteandutterbozo who i do not like one bit.
Saying he'll definately be there for the vote now, and maybe for the debate.
What was his job before politics again?
he was a Stig-o-gram
