I'm going in September :) :)
</thinly-veiled "i'm going to Rejkjavik thread>
my parents are going soon though and i'm seeing them tonight, so i'll ask what they've got planned.
(hey james!!!! i'm back!!! let's go to the pub!!!)
Thanks! Let me know what they say :)
I'm up for going to the pub sometime - probably have to be the weekend or after though!
It's a cool city and all, but heading out of the city and seeing the sights of southwest Iceland is much more satisfying.
so I'll probably only manage a couple of trips out at the most.
The girlfriend's got a residency thing there up in the northwestern fjords for the month preceding, I'm well jealous.
will PM you.
Some of this is probably out of date but
Some copy/past-age goin’ on here but, well..yes...
Good stodgy gastropubby stuff from Prikið on Laugarvegur
Have a hot dog with everything from one of the town kiosks
Lovely cheap lobster soup at Saegreifinn (tiny cafe attached to harbour fish shop) ?this is not to be missed
If you want to push the boat out, eat seafood at Laekjarbrekka.
Confectionery wise it´s worth trying a Draumur bar and Hraun candy
Kaffibarinn: Great middling place: Used to be owned in part by Damon Albarn
Karamba: little new place on Laugarvegur: small, good gigs, often free, veh up-and-coming
Bakkus: AMAZING scrappy hidden filthy drinking hole of mental proportions: DJ and smoking until illegal hours. fun.
Dillon: Good, slightly pubby venue blaring rock music with a good crowd, open late. Much dadrock music
Celtic Cross: Bit rammed in the evening but good fun. Everyone pushes everyone out of the way here.
Vesturbaelaug – Brilliant local heated outdoor swimming pool, built in the 60s or 70s...authentic Icelandic swimming (with hotpots)...bit off the tourist map
Gallery of Modern Art, like a miniature Tate modern, near the harbour
National Museum on Sudurgata is good too: well worth a look
Old Graveyard by Sudurgata is a must: free and really beautiful: visit Jon Sigursson’s grave (national hero)
Hallgrimskirkja Church is kinda the national monument and is worth a punt, but not a lot of people know about the brilliant free sculpture garden round the corner by the famed Einar Jonsson
(one of those places you can gloat about seeing when other people went and missed it)
Also, don’t miss a trip to Perlan – The big glass thing on the hill...free entry and views over Reykjavik, plus a really nice building
Gljuvrasteinn is the home of National Author Halldor Laxness...it’s just out of town but interesting if you’re reading his stuff.
Don’t book anything: wait for the weather reports and do it on the day, or book day before:
Golden Circle is essential and easily doable in a day, returning to Reykjavik.
If you get to go further afield, I’d strongly recommend:
Thorsmork (via Selljalandsfoss Waterfall) – Most amazing countryside in Iceland, arguably
Skaftafell – crazy volcanic landscape
Motorsledding on Myrdalsjokull – Pretty amazing experience on a massive glacier
Dyrholae – spooky peninsula
Jokullsarlon – floating glacier...pretty far away to be honest.
Really lovely. Otherworldly.
knows what he's talking about.
Have you been up to the westfjords? cause that's where i'll be, for a month, in a village with a population of 100 :D
a couple of times. Think my Gran's side were from there...Up towards Isafjordur too. Tis all veh pretty.
from what i know it's pretty far from Isafjordur (which is the kind of 'capital' of the northwest right??)
you like fish, right?
all there is to do there is, in order...
+ drink shitloads of coffee.
+ drink shitloads of beer.
+ shout a lot, throwing things around, and pissing in the street.
not tooo far away:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gullfoss - bonkers waterfall.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strokkur - this is amazing.
No. Absolutely nothing.
i think we are facebook friend yes mr cool? ill forward you some stuff
Have fun!! (also if you can recommend the more cheaper of airlines too book with then please let me know.)
Take lots of pics.
I have only booked one holiday in my life and even though it was only to Spain I got that bloody wrong.
£200 return. think im going again last week of aug
accosting people in the street and demanding Britans money back. Take photos of this and sell them to the Daily Mail
that'd be good.
Probably looking for decent hostels or self-catering apartments (on the cheaper side).
