Is 18a clue meant to have two L's ?
it doesn't give me a conclusive answer about the spelling of Elliot. It's not an anagram of this word.
Did 18a form out of the ashes of (3, 4, 4) ?
(7, 9, 2) off (3, 3, 41) was absolutely massive a few years ago.

I'm getting nowhere still.
I've been ignoring the top line of the clue! I did actually work it out from the letters but couldn't figure out how it fitted into 'Elliot's friend' (the best I could come up with was that the lead guitarist of The Cars is called Elliot).
but seeing as I've actually only heard of 2 of those, I think I'm doing okay. Of course, 1 of them only came from CCB's ABBA clue and from googling Alan and Mimi.
but i think a few of them might not have been successful in australia
but mostly unknown to me
and make a different grid each time. it's almost impossible to fit clues into a pre-existing grid, given the limited number of words I have to play with (i.e. bands / artists i've heard of)
or are you just doing it in excel or something?
proper crosswords have a lot less black spaces than mine. but then they usually have more scope for their clues!
although there was a DiS friendly clue in an Independent crossword last week:
