Not even a quarter as funny as it used to be?
Or is it just me?
and drawing a bit of a blank
. . . for multi-purpose compost, other than planting plants in?
It's all very well saying it's not as good as the early days, but it can't possibly have peaked on the first issue and spent 30 years getting shitter. I've got some annuals from the late 80s and what I would say is that the older ones feel a lot more anarchic and DIY than the new ones, which I think is part of the appeal for many.
But I really don't think it is vastly less funny than previously, partly for the reason that it's stayed more or less the same for the past few years and therein lies the problem. Like a lot of things, everyone will consider their first year of Viz as the golden age because it takes ten issues before the strips start to really repeat themselves.
Weirdly enough, on the last night of the course we were having a pint at 2am in the Head of Steam, when lo and behold, who should be in the corner, but Simon Donald. My mate gets really excited and debates going over to him to say how much he loves Viz. We persuade him not to as he's pissed as fuck, but an hour later, as Donald leaves, my mate rushes over to him and just says: "I just have to say, I really love Viz, it's meant so much to me." As if in slow motion, Donald turned around, looked him up and down, and replied: "You know what you are? An arselicker."
He walks out, and a deathly silence fills the room. Expecting my friend to be devastated, I walked over to him to place a comforting hand on his shoulder. Suddenly, he turns around, with tears in his eyes. "Simon Donald..." he said, his voice shaky... "Simon Donald just took the piss out of me!" And with that, he beamed from ear to ear and wouldn't stop smiling all night.
We gave them a couple of our old drawing boards and they sent down a load of goodies (annuals, comics, mugs, that kind of thing). We used to see them all every time we had a fire drill.
I always found that it seemed to go in cycles, whereby it'd be good for 6-8 months, and then be a bit shit for the next 4-6 months.
Best part was always Letterbocks and the Profanisaurus. Good for a rail journey, or to borrow a term from Roger's Profanisaurus, good Shiterature.
So no, it's not as funny anymore.
Also, I think Goldfish Boy is the funniest thing I've ever seen
I MEANT to say their 'Enrazzlement' supplement c. Christmas 2007 is one of the funniest things ever produced by printed media. Haven't laughed as much subsequently...
Them doing Biffa Bacon, Fat Slags and the like every week is their real weakness. They might have been amusing briefly in 1991 but cmon fellas
