absolutely fucking pathetic
just dissolve the scottish premier league, absolute embarrassment to football
what was he thinking?
It was clear that he was trying to signify defiance to them. As in, I know what you're singign and shouting at me but I won't listen to it. I acn understand why he might have thought this was a good idea, but he was incredibly stupid nonetheless and anyone with half a brain could see how it would pan out.
it's still not anywhere near a justificatoin for the behaviour he has had to tolerate, however.
Absolutely fair enough.
UEFA would be calling for a years ban from European competition. Guaranteed.
I may be no fan of lennon but nobody deserves that kinda crap. Lennon is a very divisive figure but only fucking scumbags would go to those lengths. Part of me quite enjoys lennons wind ups and noising up folk but for some pricks the red mist descends and shit like this happens. Its a fucking stain on scottish football.
but has anything similar ever happened to Rangers managers/players, or are Celtic fans less retarded?
There was the Dallas, Maxwell, dida & Strachan pitchstorming, but nothing in teh level of the sistained attacks on Lennon- death threats towards his family FFS? If it was me, I'd be thinking that no job, no life, is worth this much grief. But then that's what the bigots want him to think. The people that do this are not sane individuals. the problem is that for as long as fans dress up their freckled toddler offspring in celtic or rangers strips and continue the indoctrination of hatred via the likes of orange marches, this will never end.
includiong winning teh Fair Play award from Fifa. So it seems like they can mostly behave themselves ni public. They're still not 100% innocent behind the scenes though, and as evidenced in school playgrounds across the country.
who deliberately winds up opposition fans. i think this is terrible obviously and nobody deserves terrorist threats and so on, blah blah, but i am getting a little sick of hearing people going on about Lennon as if he's saint Gandhi. surely there's a less stressful job for him somewhere else?
In his defence however, the m,an must be under an intolerable amount of stress, what qwith the nutjobs of kilbirnie tryingto kill his family and the local catholic MSPs.
at the very least he lacks intelligence. people are tip-toeing around that though and painting him as a saint. NB I AM NOT CONDONING TERRORIST THREATS
although similarly, Rangers are just as stuoid and irresponsible for signing Diouf, a man who made his name spitting on a Celtic fan.
I don't think anybody- apart perhaps from the dimmest of celtic fans/ commentators- is saying that Lennon is perfect, or even approaching that. He is deeply deeply flawed as an individual, as a player, and as a manager. The crimes against him however are absolutely disproportionate to any offences he has committed over his career. the poor guy can't even go out for a drink or a meal with his family these days without some random trying to take a pop at him in the loos. What next- special branch protection for him?
and I think that it's pretty insulting that people are using that as a way of semi-condoning the attacks.
And I'm sick of people saying things like your last sentence.
come on man. no need for that.
But I keep hearing people being equivocal in their condemnation by implying that Lennon brings it on himself. NO ONE brings this kind of treatment on themselves, least of all a man who chose to represent (and be the best player for) his country, despite bigoted abuse from his own countrymen.
I think if some people try to kill you and you then taunt the group to which those people belong, you're not exactly making things easy for yourself.
shouldn't have an episode that shows Mohammed. that's not semi-condoning anything, it's just saying that sometimes you have to put the red flag away and have a bit of sense and intelligence. i'm really annoyed that someone's already pulled that 'semi-condoning' line out, and more so that it's one of the more reasonable posters on here.
but in the context of your post, it reads rather appallingly!
he retired from international football before for similar reasons. i don't see how any job is worth that much grief and hassle, especially when your family is being brought into it.
then the stress might miraculously vanish? Q.E.D.
we don;t live in a perfect world, scumbags like this exist unfortunately. i unequivocally condemn terrorism and intimidation - if that *really* needs to be pointed out, but it exists
^refer back to marckee's post re ."NO ONE brings this kind of treatment on themselves, least of all a man who chose to represent (and be the best player for) his country, despite bigoted abuse from his own countrymen.".
look my final word on this cos i have to go to bed- phrases like 'bringing it on himself', i didn't say that, it's a simplification of my argument - we're talking about terrorist scumbags here, it's not a question of whether somebody deserves or semi-deserves anything like that. what it is is an incredibly sensitive situation that can be inflamed by the smallest of actions.it's escalated to the point now where i really do fear for Lennon and/or his family. if i were him, i'd walk away, personally. if you think he should carry on in the job in defiance of the intimidation, fair enough. let's all agree that it's an awful situation all around.
I understand what you're getting at, but the world does need people who stand up to intimidation and abuse from bigots - not that Lennon's actions are always particularly sensible (from what you've said further up the thread), but I do have respect for him in continuing despite this situation.
Also, as said below, giving in at this stage would mean these people think such tactics are successful and acceptable, and there's no reason to think that Lennon and his family would suddenly cease to be a target if he did step down from the role.
If Lennon steps down then it'll make the people who carry on in such a fashion think that their actions are acceptable.
you're balatantly ignoring Lennon's background - he's been caught singing sectarian songs in pubs, spitting on Rangers scarfs, etc - you mean to say that if Celtic hire a manager from France that he's going to be subject to the same abuse? rubbish.
because he would not happen to be an Irish Catholic, which is the main part of Lennon's background that he gets so much grief for. Walter Smith has admitted singing sectarian songs but hasn't received even close to the level of abuse that Lennon has. In recent years, Aiden McGeady, and more recently James McCarthy have received death threats due to their decisions to play for Ireland rather than Scotland. McCarthy hearing of death threats against him when he was only 16. The running theme in regards to these threats, is that the men in question happen to be, or choose to be, Irish Catholics.
Not sure about that.
If it was a political march or a pop festival that caused this amount of aggravation, the police would call it off. Why sport is a special case that has to be indulged at all times has always puzzled me.
they should just bring the league to a halt and award it to celtic. its the only honourable thing to do
Not just ticket sales, but catering, merch etc. At the end of the daym it is a business, not a charity (and maybe there's the problem ;D)
So it's not unheard of
Just dissolve Rangers and Celtic instead.
were like 'Oh, I always thought they were pronounce 'Rang-ers' and 'Keltic'.'
They're girls too. Tsk.
I wish I'd never fallen in love with Henrik larsson, my life would be so much simpler (although my tear ducts would have dried up by now. the poor old 'Ton).
so I tend to keep tabs on Morton's results. I can't really say I get too worked up about them though, which is probably just as well because they're fairly shite.
On match days they full on drape it in Union flags and put a big St George's Cross with the Rangers badge on with RANGERS LONDON CRU (a vintage I haven't heard of #champagnesocialistLOLs) written underneath it.
Might go and brick it.
seems to have actually been getting more vocal in the last couple of years. It's not very 2011 is it?
I do have a question for Rangers fans though, as a simple partisan Celtic supporter. How do you feel about your club anthem (or at least your fan anthem) continuing to be the Billy Boys? There are without a doubt an objectionable number of celtic fans singing pro-IRA songs but I certainly don't and I believe i'm in the majority with that, the number of Rangers fans singing about being "up to our knees in fenian blood" on the other hand...
'up to our knees' pish. Its also been amended for for a song about Mo Edu.
My gf asked me recently if i knew all these songs and did i ever sing them and my answer was yes i know all the words and yes i use to sing them, but i learnt all these songs without knowing what the hell they meant (i have been going to see Rangers since i was 8, about 25 yrs ago), it wasn't till me and my brothers got a bit older we kinda said to each other 'fucking hell man, those are some dodgy lyrics' and i think like all right minded folk we stopped singing them. Rangers do have lots of songs that aren't all anti catholic etc and it has gotten much better since i first started going.
The fucktard who attacked lennon last night and the fucktards who sent him letter bombs aren't football people, they're scum, and regardless how much rangers or celtic do there are always gonna be fucking idiots kicking about. As fitz says below i do think we need to have a look at seperate schooling and beyond just football in order to sort this shite out.
total fucktards on both sides, i think to be honest both clubs need to do more to police their away fans.
I don't know if you'd agree L-P but most of the "dodgy" stuff gets sung at away games, I haven't heard the likes of the "boys of the old brigade" sung at Parkhead in a long time, and that's a good thing
I do think Rangers could do more and i think the rangers fans could do a lot more.
Yeah i use to go to a lot of away games and i still get along to the odd one now and again and it can be fucking appalling at times, its a total different kinda fan, well actually thats not entirely true lots of them are sound and kinda like me (though i am slightly better dressed :) but yeah some are real plebs.
Back to football matters fc, you think there is any chance of another helicopter sunday?
I love helicopter sunday, but my blood pressure doesn't. (I bloody hope there is :D)
I fucking hope there isn't, man i did at the time feel kinda bad for all my celtic mates, tough way to lose a league, that being said i was at easter road that day and it was quite an incredible feeling :D
or "black sunday" as we refer to it ;)
after the game just looking sick and in total disbelief, i could appreciate just how shite you must have all felt.....but then i got down to the serious business of texting my celtic mates on the wind up ;)
it's primarily the dregs from both sides who go to away games (obviously a massive generalisation here) as there's definitely a different mindset/vibe. I've only been to a few away games but that's always been my impression.
To be honest I don't see it, and from a public order sense part of me really hopes not as I can see it kicking off big style if there is :(
what you think?
I am still nervous as fuck though, you never can tell. But we should beat them, i was at ibrox the other night and i was so fucking nervous as well, can't remember when i was as nervous as that. Don't think you'll have any problem beating motherwell, tell you what if we haven't scored by half time its gonna get very fucking nervy indeed, think i'll watch from behind the sofa :)
if neither of us score early, or indeed go behind the tension will be fucking unbelievable!
which is a shame, as I think Celtic have a much stronger team and have easily been the dominant force in Scottish Football since the new years game. Always next year :(
but then shit like this shows that Celtic fans can be just as deplorable in their mindset - http://www.facebook.com/pages/John-Wilson-the-Hearts-fan-should-be-hanged/144989185572754?sk=wall
the whole country needs to take a look at themselves and why this is still allowed to go on with separate catholic schools, orange/republican marches it's a problem that won't be solved by playing games behind closed doors or having a fucking one day summit
has now found his address & phone number posted on various sites online
i hate to think what some fucking idiot is going to do with that information.
just remember that their fans were singing IRA songs at last night's game.
A small, disgusting section of fans, yes.
It saddens me how so many of the travelling support are so mental.
Kinda clarifying that I wasn't an IRA-loving bombnut. But it disppeared. Oh well.
If Mick McCarthy got twatted by a WBA fan, I would expect my PM to have more important things to do than condemn it.
Condemning it only serves to acknowledge that this petty, embarrassing, depressing rivalry is on the political radar. It shouldn't be and he should have ignored it. Treat it for what it was. A nob-end football fan being a nob-end. I don't care what the nob-end's justification is or was, just ignore him/it/the whole thing.
I love football because it's the only place where you can and be really partisan, taunt people, swear openly, ridicule, boo, be outraged and "hate" your fellow man for 90 minutes - all based on a loose affilation to a particular football team.
It's not real and it doesn't mean anything. Hence, its greatness.
The minute you start bringing pointless shit like religion into what is essentially an excuse for a sing song and a bit of shouting, you ruin what's great about it.
Get religion out of football and don't legitmise the whole Celtic/Rangers thing by condemning it.
Fine, have your sectarian prejudices if you must, but keep that shit out of football.
Football is for trivial prejudices, like hair-length, fame of wife and former clubs.
if Mick McCarthy got twatted by a WBA it wouldn't be because he was Irish or Catholic or indeed the manager of a football team widely associated with both of those things.
Also I think by addressing it it hopefully shows a willingness or commitment to ridding Scotland of sectarianism entirely, both in and out of football.
By addressing it he's saying "hey Scottish football fans brimming with sectarian hatred, you're special and we make a special case for your nobbish behaviour."
He's reinforcing the belief that sectarian idiots who go to football are somehow more important than normal idiots who go to football.
i think he's saying "sectarianism exists and is causing shit like this to happen in and out of football", remember the summit thing they had after the Old Firm game in may was born out of all the statistics about domestic violence/serious assaults "spiking" on the days of games.
basically my point is by not addressing it or giving, what is a pretty serious incident given all the other shit Lennon has had this season, the proper weight he'd have been making a mistake.
a' I love football because it's the only place where you can and be really partisan, taunt people, swear openly, ridicule, boo, be outraged and "hate" your fellow man for 90 minutes - all based on a loose affilation to a particular football team.'a
You need to become a politician. That's pretty much all they do in life.
I don't see it happening, personally.
just last weekend too -
utter fucking madness
Rangers and Celtic are by comparison mid table Championship sides. Two sets of big fish in small ponds waving cocks and posting bullets to each other. Anyone who supports a team based on religion is a proper bellchod .... fuck 'em*
*The rest are probably sound
