And who voted for AV because they genuinely felt that it was the best voting system.
AV is rubbish, the Tories (and Labour) know this and know that it wouldn't have changed anything. rejecting AV means we can push for something which is actually PR, like STV.
if we'd accepted AV as some kind of 'step closer' to PR, then we'd waiting in vain. AV was only really trotted out because it is the worst and it would make the Lib Dems feel like they were in power, which, allegedly, they were.
it could also mean that you don't want to have to fanny about with AV for years when you could have something better now.
people should realise that. it's like voting for SNP =/= a desire for independence.
but whenever the subject of electoral reform comes up in future, the pro-FPTP camp will point to the 70% rejection of AV as evidence there is no real will among the electorate for change (even though it isn't, of course). It's depressing but the sheer scale of the defeat makes things very difficult from here.
also, it appears the Lib Dems are preparing to bend over on House of Lords reform as well:
the Libs have come out of all this looking even weaker than they did already. 'In government, but out of power' as one of the comments on that Indy article puts it.
SNP =/= a desire for independence thing
let's complete the picture by saying that
Green party & Socialist parties =/= a desire for independence
and unionist Labour, Lib Dem & Conseravtive =/= a desire for unionism.
Party voters in not-agreeing-with-every-aspect-of-a-party-manifesto non shocker.
unquestionably. it is better.
i dont believe there's the tiniest chance of any other voting reform in my lifetime
and I think a referendum on AV into AV+ doesn't sound like a big move and would have easily got in (if we had a populance that supported AV which obviously we don't) when it's essentially adding proportional representation in parliament.
but there's no post. if there was a post it might be a better system.
