SO YES. POSSIBLY.
FOR A FLY GUY
but I assume they have some kind of thought process going on
(this is simplistic because you asked a simplistic question, perhaps you should try to qualify your question more)
if they do, then this is the indicator that flies think
as I pointed out to find out to what degree, the question needs to be qualified more.
Im afraid that even your question 'but to what degree' is not succinct enough, because as far as i am aware angles and temperature are measured in degrees but not 'thinking', in fact i am unaware of anu objective scale of thinking.......however if you would like to provide a scale of any sort (it can be a verbally descriptive scale if you like)
then i csan provide you with my best answer on where flies thinking lies
of course unfortunately 'thinking' is broader than that which can be captured by a linear scale of 'motor reflexes ......(up to).....metaphysical philosophy'
so even this is flawed.
Also some motor reflexes are controlled not just by the brain but by other nerve clusterfucks
they have the ability to make independant decisions (although this might not sem to be used often)
they should be able to rethink decisions
re political conservatism.....that is :D if I werent stuck in pedant mode i would POTD that, but I am stuck in pedant mode
then we come to the two most difficult ones
'having opinions' and 'awareness of ones own condition'
these are highly subjective concepts, for instance humans might think they are aware of their own condition (becaus they are aware at some level of their condition, and yet most humans are stupendously UNAWARE of their own condition. In their own terms flies ARE aware of their own condition.....it really is a relative thing, i.e. subjective not objective.
Where to start with 'opinions' hmm well I think the many opinions that i hear from humans tend to be merely be regurgitated messages from stuff that people have heard earlier on, and theu tend to be phrased in abstract human language.....I believe that non communal flies therefore do not use abstract verbal communication and they also do not pass on many other forms of messages.......however some communal insects do regurgitate other messages that they have recieved from others, so in this respect there is some opinion in this as the regurgitated messages will vary slightly from the original that was heard (very similar to humans)
of course a few humans do have more original opinions that are even more varied as they have a wider range of influences that has informed their opinion..........so this is not a simple question
now we come to two tricky ones
I am just on an angry pedantic streak at the moment, I think that the word 'think' is a very general and ill defined term, it does not really define any activity, it is more used as a tool of conversation
since all philosophy (as defined by humans) involves expression via verbal reasoning then one would assume that flies do not philosophise (although one could beg to differ in that perhaps one can philosophise through emotions or smells or music or maths or other mechanisms......but humans tend to over emphasise verbal resoning as that is what they have been conditioned to always rely on, to the detriment and ridicule of other methods of logic (apart maybe from maths and music...these are accepted and tolerated if not always understood)
but the official recieved wisdom is that brain does = thought
(who said anything about concious? witness project management)
do you mean that a brain doesnt mean thought? Well in that case I think we need to look at our definitions. Please define thought. Please define brain.
every 3.5 seconds.
was there a fly eyeing you up in a suspicious manner?
There were 2 big fat bluebottles in my longue and they were all gross and flying round my head while I was trying to eat spaghetti. Ruined my meal and I thought they knew what they were doing.
but no not really it's all bullshit
so merely by thinking they have created that which they desire most....thats magic
no they don't.
my mind has just expanded to new horizons
where they reprogrammed a bunch of fruit flies. so YES THEY CAN AND THEY CAN ALSO BE CONTROLLED
Flies lack conceptual capacities.
