Intelligence is a beautiful thing, and academics and intellectuals are essential to our progress in the world. They discover cures for illnesses, we get to learn more and more about our natural habitat, our neighbours in space, and so on. I don't think everybody aspires to be an academic though. Very few undergraduates go on to pursue their 'intelligence' and most go out to 'work' instead.

I don't even post on this board ever, really, I just read around every day, but I really want to ask something about this. I might have misunderstood but I really don't get the idea that anyone shouldn't feel proud of achieving something they set out to do. I couldn't go to university despite getting a place due to a personal situation/financial constraints etc. etc. but I still hope I can get a degree someday. Not because I think it will make me better than anyone else but because I would enjoy it, I love to study, I love writing essays, I'm a massive nerd. Why shouldn't somebody be proud of overcoming obstacles, working hard and achieving their goals? It doesn't necessarily mean they think other people aren't as worthy for not doing the same thing. Unless I've completely got the wrong end of the stick here, I don't understand why personal pride should be punished?

If there's an argument to be had, it's that some of the world's natural resources are sold as commodities at a price which is influenced by a lot of very unfair factors, and as such can be manipluated for gain at the expense of the planet and the najority of its people. However, as it is, the oil industry is complex, and the resource is in high demand, and so consumers will pay the price and producers will produce, and you and I will stay in our great jobs, working hard, but being rewarded in a way that doesn't perhaps match a similar effort in a lower-demand sector.

1. "intelligence" is defined by higher education which *in general* working class people have less access/engagement to/with *for various reasons* as well as economic reasons
2. The illusion that, thanks to the system, social mobility is made possible for most people and should be an aspiration. Moreover that social mobility is SO possible, in fact, that those who do not make it up the ladder have only themselves to blame. But he fails to spot that this doesn't matter. These people are anonymous and aren't apparently stupid for reasons of society, race, class, or anything because stupidity doesn't discriminate.
And moreover, some people just have real difficulties not typing like fucking cretins despite being perfectly intelligent. Is it wrong to laugh at them? Probably not because no doubt they're busy laughing at someone else they look down on. And the world continues to turn...
It might be wrongly perceived or they may just be idiots.
Idiots cause a lot of trouble. They take ages doing things and get in your way. They fuck up work and make you redo it. They decide it would be fun to drop bricks on moving trains, or to spray paint on cars, or to throw eggs at cyclists. They don't understand how recycling works and cause problems for that industry. They eat your food instead of their own from the communal fridge at work.
In short: Idiots are a fucking menace and I have no problems with letting off steam by having a laugh at their expense once in a while.

No harm has come as a result of people laughing at this idiot-speak (far more rage has been caused by you and your arguing). However, lot's of joy has been had. Therefore, until you got involved this was a purely positive thread. To deny people the right to laugh at this would be needlessly denying joy.
Groups of people bond when they laugh at other stupid people. This is probably an evolved trait that has developed as we are social creatures. By telling others it is wrong to laugh, you are implying that they are genetically inferior.

So it isn't a perceived lack of intelligence that is being mocked but the decision to type in a way that is more difficult to read.

I think people who say class and intelligence aren't linked are being very unrealistic, every time some bigot trys to link race and intelligence they rightly get shot down for not controling for class, I know IQ is supposed to me a measure completely separate from knowledge and education but in reality it isnt, obviously there will always be exceptions but one of the biggest influences on your iq is how well off your parents are that is a known fact, and that makes total sense as growing up in an environment where learning is encouraged is obviously going to develop intelligence compared to an environment where it is not, no one is responsible for the background they are born into, so mocking someone for being less intelleigent when they were born into an environment where their potential intelligence was less likely to be developed isn't really on. So yeah if having status like this are a sign of lower intellegence (which i'd say from experience does tend to be true) and there is a tendancy (tendency not a rule) for working class people to have lower intelligence then yes it is middle class snobbery to mock them. Im sure I will be willfully misunderstood

what about people who are bigoted - against women or black people or gays or anyone really. Shouldn't the bigots be educated so that they know those "other" people are just as valuable as anyone else and that they should treat them nicely?
