... upsets Torygraph blogger
Steve Bell is a deeply unfunny cartoonist, how the hell is he still employed?
I've never really got Steve Bell's stuff. I don't understand why all newspaper cartoon space isn't just given over to Calvin and Hobbes.
There aren't usually punchlines as such until Friday.
It's like people always tell me Doonesbury is brilliant, and I'm willing to believe them, but reading one strip is just flat out baffling. You've got to have a bit of a chuckle/something thought provoking in there, otherwise it's just filler.
has there ever been a punchline in any Fred Bassett cartoon?
I just don't understand it. Is there supposed to be a joke?
sucks to be you.
and try to focus your eyes on a spot about 6 inches *behind* the cartoon.
I guess it's referring to Hague's rather over-elaborate cries of I'm not gay when it was revealed he shared a room with a male colleague when all around didn't give two shits about his sexuality but did about his lack of open-ness over expenses.
That was a while ago though.
And there's nothing homophobic about that cartoon
which looks like it is starting off a thread based around the claims by some in the press and his own coalition that Hague has supposedly lost his mojo.
but assuming that it’s the If… strip from today, it’s not really homophobic – it’s more poking fun at the Tory party, Tory press and Tory blogs that forced William Hague to deny the rumours that they were spreading about his sexuality.
The reason that Steve Bell is still in a job is that, however crap he might be, he is still far, far better than every other political cartoonist working in all the other UK newspapers.
Short and sweet. Good ideas man.
Awww diddums. Apart from the fact that that's bollox. Silence from Twitter because it's merely a deeply deeply shit cartoon from a deeply shit cartoonist.
at the amount of retweets of guido, desperate to turn this into something.
Silence from Twitter because it's merely a deeply deeply shit cartoon from a deeply shit cartoonist.
ConDem coalition HAHAHAHAHAHA
Also as a jellyfish in a cycle helmet. Layers of meaning.
He's a goddamn prophet.
I don’t really get it, and it’s extremely childish, but it still makes me giggle because it’s so stupid.
right back when he became the tory leader
or because twitter doesn't care?
Either way, I'm livid.
"silence from twitter because it's the guardian" is toys-out-of-pram rightism worthy of CG
don't do innovation and technology, isn't he?
It's the most reductive, simple-minded campaign I've ever seen.
It's being run by the guy from the Tax Payer's Alliance isn't it?
A: Because even the people who write political cartoons don't give a shit about them.
could you point it out for me please?
i knew there was a reason i didn't read political cartoons.
now i remember it's because they aren't funny or insightful.
people liek steve bell should just stop what they are doing and get a fucking real job. and that's not because of the 'homophobic' cartoon (it's not really that homophobic, just tasteless), but because he's the funniest joke he'll ever be able to write.
just print the far side. and calvin and hobbes.
he gets to draw for a living and probably gets paid more than most of us. i say fair play to him
And I get to waste half of my time on DiS.
Bell was amazing. I wouldn't describe him as razor sharp or anything but his caricatures were amazing and his surreality and obscenity were spot on. Nowadays he's not only not particularly funny but his art's gone downhill too; it's all blurry and his caricatures are difficult to even recognise.
Still, coming up with a strip five times a week plus a comment/analysis spread for 25 odd years must be pretty difficult.
