And when did it happen?
No one posts here anymore...
5 years ago it was pretty hectic.
Hardly anyone posts on a weekend, because the mainstay of DiS is bored office workers who actually go out and enjoy leisure pursuits on their days off.
Strange to think about, but there you go.
It's not that different during the week.
currently more active users than there has ever been. maybe you have more time than you once did?
no facebook, no twitter, DiS worked properly
I don't think the boards are that much less active, but if you look at the articles 99% seem to have one or two comments, and most of those are the chinese knockoff clothes spambots. i think the humorously-toned news pieces were just more of a talking point than the reviews/columns?
but with the monthly nights it just felt more like a 'community' then.
i dunno, the notting hill events were rarely attended by the "community" and sucked up a lot of man hours and bits of money, considering they were free so there wasn't really any return (certainly isn't something i have time for or can afford to pay someone to look after).
the barfly events became really hard to do after the licensing laws changed and we weren't guaranteed a deluge of people. to be a promoter with any real scope you need to massively invest in it, and we didn't really feel London needed another competitor to Mean Fiddler, Live Nation (Clear Channel), ATP, Eat Your Own Ears and all the smaller promoters...and again, man hours spent on events in London vs focus not on fixing the site, dealing with advertisers (paydirt) and time spent on the content itself.
we do still do loads of events in Sheffield and some in Manchester, as well as festival stages at Summer Sundae (in the huge hall!), Great Escape, Iceland Airwaves, etc...
at 400 plus quid per day, we can't afford a great deal of developer time. been focussing on finding funds.
also, there isn't THAT MUCH rong.
well, some people can't hear In Da Club
people comment less now as the folks who once commented now have their own blogs or niche publications that they agree with but the traffic for content is higher (partly due to less volume of it). plus people are more likely to write a snarky tweet than sign-up to leave a comment nowadays.
we can't afford a full-time news editor and i'm rubbish at being 'funny' in news.
we've focussed more on reviews (news is covered by the music forum and now bands/labels and promoters 'announce' directly to their audience). we've also shifted from discussion articles (which didn't generate as much traffic as the comments implied, and require full-time writers to really do them proper) to specialism in terms of genre and location, as that seemed to be what people wanted more of and allows DiS to be somewhat unique now that there are about 3000 more blogs and sites than there were 5yrs ago.
</not meaning to be defensive>
podcasts went out the window due to the high cost of royalties. and i've shifted over to the hugely popular playlists on spotify (I realise it don't have the same banter) and our audio tumblr, which you can stick on in the background via http://hypem.com/#!/list/14251
but yeah, we had 5-7 full-time staff, now it's me and a couple of freelancers doing a day or two a week/a hour or so a day.
just chat, interviews, etc. BANTER. all of that.
could be fun/interesting. dunno if there would be demand/it could work at all...etc.
maaaaaybe. there are enough words and opinions on there site, not too sure there would be enough interest. maybe upto 500 people would listen but i might be wrong. think there are better things we could spend our time and energy on...i might be rong
a weekly gossip round up of whats been happening on the boards.
you could just do it, unofficially :)
it'll look like I haven't got a life! (I do!)
perhaps we just need some sort of week in review thread? people picking their favourite bits of the week - might give folks a reason to pop online on a sunday if they know it's happening?
but I don't always come on here on a Sunday and it would take a while (and need someone dedicated) to get it up and running and have people know it will always be there on a Sunday so they can log on.
Hmmmm....I'll think about it.
I miss that, I quite often missed stuff on the site that I saw in the email.
yeah but it was usually just the most popular threads
Concentrated solely on chris_is_cool posts, obviously, as they're the most crucial.
ill interview disers, talk about inane rubbish, and describe funny pictures of cats with words (obviously you cant see the pictures its a flipping podcast)
i actually would do this
would that work out over the internet somehow?
something about adam and joe and doing it live from a shoe factory.
"Thanks for joining us here at the shoe factory. We've got 2 hours of gossip and chat for you so sit tight and fiddle with your laces or something"
you've got shoes to mend and your break isn't for another 45 minutes.
aye, sorry, sunday, shouldturnoffcomputer...was just trying to explain before this thread escalated.
i was waiting for a 'isn't dis a bit shit now michael_w isn't on here as much' thread.
Are you happy now, now that you've made DiS feel bad about itself? You big bully.

cant believe this got no replies;
and nightshift is definitely down on what it was 2 years ago (but the blame for that drop can be laid squarely on whiterussian. And tinychat I guess.).
But social feels as busy as ever.
we used to smash the shit out of the night shift.
i miss those lazy summer days.
and dicko and yesiamaduck too.
Dicko and ducky moved on to tinychat; wr has gone all conscientious office worker / student; thedailybumbler has gone to jail (surely?); and you, mikey, have simply abandoned us.
Up in the right hand thingy. I used to be able to see.
because it's highly inaccurate, but you can still get to it somehow...
just glad to be of help, really :)
so was easier to remove it
