Did you have a good weekend? I did.
Now the sun is shining and I'm going to get some work done. ONWARDS!
it's making me feel miserable about my existence.
My laptop is about six years old now and still chugging along. I could really do with a new one, but I'd feel bad getting rid of this one. Like putting down a pet.
like... i can live without it (she says). it's more all the uni work that's on there. ffs.
Where was it from? It's not one of those that was knocking around DiS was it?
i'm gonna go see the uni people this afternoon and see if they can fix it. fingers crossed.
back up your docs & files
mmmmm....... feel that lovely 'new bedsheets' freshness. it's like getting a new pooter.
but i have a virus which doesn't let me open any programs, i can't back anything up. i've only lost about three days work, but that's an entire presentation, a 1000+ word essay plan and about 400 words of my dissertation. could be worse.
hard drive caddy. whip out the hard drive from your puter. treat that as an external drive as you transfer your stuff from that to the cheap external usb hard drive in step one above.
so... pretty slavageable, by the sounds of it. but a massive arse if you've got stuff to be getting on with though. fair play for being philosohpical to say /only/ three days work. i'd prolly be be weeping.
how exactly do i >whip out the hard drive from my puter< etc?
do some minor unspecified physical fiddling (possibly involving screws) to get to the hard drive
unplug hard drive from puter
plug hard drive into caddy. /probably/ something like this would do you fine: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001EEQQ8Q
treat hard drive + caddy as usb external drive that you can connect to any working computer (and therefore copy files from, to put onto your new actual USB external drive. 1TB for ~£50 seems like the sweet spot for price v capacity for a full size drive requiring a power supply. 500GB (i.e. half the storage) for slightly less cash gets a portable drive that doesn't need a power supply and will power itself from the computer's USB conection).
that sounds... doable. i'm still going to see if i can get an appointment with the uni IT people, but if not i'll try this.
thanks very very much <3
i've prolly made it sound more complex than it is. but if it's just a virus/software thing, everything /should/ be pretty fixable without major expense. if it's hardware then that's not so good cost-wise (but your data should still be retrievable).
You can usually fix such things by starting in Safe Mode and running Rkill then Adware.
that i CAN'T start my laptop in safe mode. i press f8 from the start, select safe mode, it runs through files, gets stuck for about 5 mins, goes to a black screen, and then starts up normally.
it's the system tools virus, googled it last night on my flatmate's computer but couldn't find any solutions that didn't involve starting again in safe mode.
then you could do the following to bypass Windows completely:
-Download Ubuntu (a linux OS that does what Windows does) from someone else's PC. It'll take, say, an hour or so.
-Burn Ubuntu onto a CD (or USB drive), following the instructions here: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
-Boot up your puter from the CD. It'll be like a normal OS desktop setup, but it'll not have installed anything. It'll be running 'live' from the CD. (Consequently it'll a little slowly cos it's having to read stuff off a CD (or USB drive) compared to normally running from it's hard drive).
-You'll also be able to treat the puter like a normal PC and browse your drive for files and fire up an internet browser. So you should be able to email vital files you're after to yourself (you'll need your wifi password if you're not connecting directly to the internet via an ethernet cable), or wang 'em onto a USB stick (if Ubuntu will recognise it).
-You could even use the word processor included with Ubuntu (prolly Open Office) to type up stuff up etc. But it's not ideal, cos you need to keep saving to somewhere extaernal to your puter. Cos as soon as you turn your machine off without actually installing Ubuntu (which you don't want to do without salvaging all your files first), everything is back to square one and you'll be in a fresh desktop when you boot up Ubuntu via CD/USB again.
-All of this it's merely a semi-quick and temporary firefighting workaround so you can access your stuff and work on it on another machine whilst yours is crocked. But it might be of some use if you're not able to do the full whack backup & OS reinstall in a hurry.
this also sounds doable. a million thanks.
And it's prolly the quickest way to get to your stuff (and get working on it on a uni/someone else's PC or whatever).
The full fix of a backup & reinstall isn't particularly difficult either, but it involves splashing ~£50+ NOW (which you're kinda gonna have to/should do anyway if you want a backup of your stuff - which you do), plus a good half day or a day setting your computer up from scratch (not difficult, just tedious if it's not the kind of thing that floats your boat).
Hope it all turns out ok.
if so this might be worth trying:
i'm not sure. maybe.
Not a bad weekend. Had dinner with my parents on Saturday, and made some pretty yummy pancakes yesterday (couldn't wait for Tuesday!). Listened to the new REM album on my way in this morning - a lot better than their last couple.
I'm glad the sun's out.
Is it pancake tomorrow? Probably won't bother to be honest.
and I am/have been at work all day.
Just thought you should know.
What's the holiday?
How does one mark labour day? Gatherings of the working masses singing the Red Flag in the street? The closest we get is May Day where students smash up Starbucks, but I prefer all the pagan Morris dancing shit side of that anyway.
Sun is good.
The tin of Roses the work experience boy bought, were left in reach of the sun, all weekend.
They're now on my desk.
& i aint had no breakfast.
Yesterday we bought a new mattress. Managed to get it in the back of my car (it's a memory foam dealy that was packaged curled up, so pretty easy) and, this morning, managed to squeeze our old mattress in the back of the car ready to go to the tip tonight. My car is at tiny tiny Peugeot 107, so feeling pretty Houdini-like today.
Slept so well. Hmm. NEW MATTRESS SUNDAY.
I see them and think once you've made your dent, your kind of stuck in it, which wouldn't be good for a fidgeter like me.
I'd imagine that if you got a mattress that was purely memory foam and nothing else it'd sink like you say, but the one we bought has pocket springs and layers of... padding stuff... in it too so it should remain in shape.
but we've never done owt purely social. i'm not the most proactively gregarious of persons, and seeing as MsWza and i are best buds, i haven't tended to acquire many new pals as old ones have faded into the background. plus, it's even less easy to do that when it's a girl. kinda. and then she was there with her fella at the train station, and on the way to the aforementioned free gig. and we all got on dandily. and cued up a pub quiz night for an unspecified date. which is nice. so yeah, i guess there's a bit of melancholy behind it.
which reminds me, there's another old long lost female friend of mine that we fairly recently met up with as a couple of couples and got on famously with and said we'd sort another meat out. i really should do that.
hmmm. girl. friends. defo a 200+ reply fred in there somewhere.
I could talk about female friends till the cows come home.
Sounds like if you had a nice time with them and are going to hang out again you can call them your friends. It's nice that that you call MsWza your best bud. Early moring awww...
My mother says its IMPOSSIBLE to be friends with someone of the opposite sex as there is always, ALWAYS sexual tension.
yeah, alright mum. stop being gross.
but a smidge of minor sexual tension can be ok, surely? it's kinda what makes the world go around. no need to be a dickwad and cross the line tho. we're all grown ups innit.
It's probably easy for that to confused with some sort of sexual tension, but I don't think it has to.
There's defo a thread in this (and probably has been dozens before).
am well bored.
I'm pretty sure someone always crosses the line.
he's taken it and ran with it
my weekend was amazingly great but now I am in a fucking pissed off bad mood. I've been summoned to Manchester tomorrow. There is no way I am getting up at 4am again to go there so I've got a feeling i'm just going to tell them all to fuck off if they say I have to be there at 9am again. I really don't want to go as I know I'm just gonna get told off for problems that aren't my fault and I just want to quit :''''''(
I'm gonna go have a little cry now.
Try and look at the positives - sitting on a train watching DVDs and doing no work, hanging around in Manchester feeling superior to the knobheads and doing no work, it'll all be over by tomorrow night, and soon enough you'll be telling your bosses where to stick it anyway. UP THEIR ARSES.
but the negatives outweigh the positives and I'm just not in the mood for it :( I'm gonna email them saying "Can I ask what this meeting is about please?"
I'm being such a little bitch today but its only because I didn't fall asleep until 3am so I'm in a massive grump.
Dance out my rage!
Option (if you kinda need to go, even though you don't want to):
Tell them you want paying for the travel time. Or putting up nearby overnight (so you can have half a day off for getting up there and then a cheeky Manchester meat, too!).
Travelling from 4am at short/no notice is arse.
The thing is, I probably wouldn't mind as much but I've got plans tomorrow night that I do not want to change or put off so its just gonna suck SO BAD if I have to go and not get back to London until really late. I think I may just say "its too short notice for me come up tomorrow but I can come up on Wednesday/Thursday" and just leave it at that. If he asks why I will say its because i've got plans AND A FUCKING LIFE. I didn't take a job where I have to travel to Manchester once a month.
if you're doing something outside of work hours... fuck 'em.
'a supplier/a project/a client is due tomorrow and there's no other day they can make it' excuse?
You're allowed to do things in the evening.
They're your employers, not your owners Meo.
Just go with TERRIBLE period pains :(
Fine, fine, see you tomorrow.
went out for lunch in a chocolate factory, saw some cathedrals, went out for dinner, went to tallin, ate pancakes, saw churches, got drunk on the boat back and stood out on deck watching the ship cut through the Baltic ice, went to an art gallery, had coffee and cake in a nice cafe, got new sunglasses from here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockmann, went for cake at an alvar aalto cafe, went out for tapas, got a good essay mark. Now I'm eating nice jam on homemade soda bread.
New sheets, ftw. And woke up with the run in my eyes.
All lovely, had it been Sunday morning.
Hi Chintzy! I am waiting for FEEDBACK. When you get a mo, obviously.
I can't get on Facebook. *SIGH* They really sre closing in on me.
I would like to be the little teddy: http://critteristic.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/cute-cat-sleeping.jpg
I took a really close up picture of my cat today: http://desmond.yfrog.com/Himg610/scaled.php?tn=0&server=610&filename=1q3te.jpg&xsize=640&ysize=640
Next time I see Mr P-PP II I'll take a photo. OH, I think I have one.
OOH THE SUSPENSE!!!
You have TWO cats?
You well favour Alf, then.
Poor other cat.
Alf and Sapphire.
Sapphires alright but she's no Alf.
(How long before people start moaning do you think?)
(not long I reckon)
To be said in the style of James Bond.
It's definitely a cat.
At work after a pitiful 4 and a half hours sleep. No good reason either, just a combination of getting up at eleven yesterday morning and staying up until about one trying to name all the Bond films on Sporcle.
Moved to my nice new house at the weekend and had a really nice curry. We're cat sitting in Hebden Bridge this week, the cat's a bit traumatised from moving house recently and so last night she decided to cry/howl for ages without taking a breath.
More needy cat for the rest of the week, pancake day tomorrow AND it's birthday week :D Shame I have to write three articles about concrete in my spare time at some point too.
You make it sound like a chore.
I'm WELL excited.
His winning find was a book called 'A History of the Concrete Roofing Tile in Germany'. He read it. He said it was really boring.
still the lesbian capital of the UK?
Or is that Sowerby Bridge? I get them mixed up.
Sylvia Plath is also buried there, going to try and find where one evening after work if I have time.
feeling pretty turd now though. And i somehow 4 meetings today when I don't even really have any work on. Stupid.
Going to this tonight:
which should be decent if I can stay awake...
and today is my birthday so good excuse to go out later and have a drink!!
into an entire thread :'(.
Keep it together man. There are rules.
saw Poino and Deathscalator (which is possibly one of the best band names I've heard recently) at a local venue. Spent possibly far too much money on music and did about 6 miles on my bike on sunday, Alberto Contador best watch out.
super ill but went out anyway, friday sat in a cold beer garden getting iller, saturday went to a birthday party and just spent the whole night in a chair trying not to fall asleep, taken the day off work but im so bored
Saturday: had 7 mates round
Sunday: flat was in a worse state than Friday, ordered chinese, it was terrible.
Monday: Got in trouble for making a mistake with regards some money for my bosses brother.
Later: Going to have to clean flat. Need to go for a run.
Was nice, made significant progress on FFVII, watched That Fucking Tank and rocked out and celebrated my sisters birthday. I have my parents coming over for tea on saturday, need to plan what I'm making.
I played Pokemon ALL weekend. Not even the new one either.
i am literally wetting myself in excitement.
Well, not literally :(
I've racked up about 14 hours on Pearl since Thursday evening. Pretty shameful for a 25 year old laydee TBH.
so not massively far through yet, but still, 5 hours of gaming yesterday.
Had to take one of the rats to the vet on friday, he's pretty ill :(
Went to see Stewart Lee on Friday night and then back to Newport for a few pints in Le Pub, tried some Stella Black. Rugby on Sunday and it seems to be the case that I am actually not that bad a referee judging by this weeks debacle (if the player runs off the pitch and downs the ball it's not a try ffs) for the record the eldests first try was pretty stylish. Played 7 a side last night and due to a mix up we were outside on the astroturf, it was fucking cold so a t shirt and shorts left me feeling a tad under dressed.
Oh. It's not a dark beer. :-(
I tried Stella Black for the first time on Friday too. Mildly disappointed it wasn't a dark beer, but preferred it to Stella 5%. It reminded us of Peeterman Artois, though, so we had a little cry and reminisced.
But probably as you say Peeterman Artois which was probably a lot better, I think they brought out another one around that time..Bock?
So wound up not going clubbing and played PS3 and watched movies in GLORIOUS HIGH DEFINITION. Honestly don't know why I didn't upgrade before, it makes soooooooo much of a difference to the gaming experience.
Saturday: Fucking busy, not a happy bunny. Decorating, dog sitting, dog walking, shopping, more dog walking, more shopping. Short films thing, then should have been drinks with mates, but was knacked and went home early.
Sunday: kicked about doing nowt very much. Played some PS3, watched a couple of films (kings speech and mad max: the road warrior), made Hummus, ate well. Chatting through the stresses me and the gf are dealing with as she's off in 5 weeks to do good deeds in backwards countries for a year and a bit.
Open communication is good, but a pain in the arse if you're used to just bottling everything up and getting smashed to cope.
Warning: Steep learning curve ahead.
just download skype or something.
And I had a bit of fun with feedback between her laptop and my desktop interacting in a 70's progrock drone way, when we were tesing it to make sure it worked properly.
We had to stop as we were being proper sad, sat ten feet apart sending each other rude chat messages. Start as you mean to go on though.
Went to Stewart Lee on saturday afternoon, then got stunningly wasted in soho. Spend sunday sleeping, shopping, eating and drinking and stuff. Took a nightnurse. Still feel woozy :)
I have to do a potential allnighter at work tomorrow night, so I'm trying to stockpile sleep.
Gf is making a film so I stayed in all weekend and kept her company, like I have any friends here other than her anyway... Made some great sausage & mash and used our new egg poacher thingymajigs to make poached eggs. Watched lots of Mad Men. Learned to play The Rat with gf, her on keys, me on bass, if we ever come to Xylopen Mic we'll play it.
Former Ghosts last night. I counted 18 people including myself and my pal. Wish I had bought a t-shirt, they were pretty snazzy.
