I need a new laptop, and i'm not sure whether to get
basically is it worth shelling out an extra 130 quid for?
You can put them side by side and spec up the macbook so that it has the same ram and hard drive as the macbook pro and there's only 11 quid between them. The main difference would be the processor which even though the Pro has a lower clock speed is faster.
Here's a quote from a review
."was 35 percent faster than the 106 score by the 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo model it replaces".
and here's a page of benchmarks
which states ."The performance of the new MacBook Pros is amazing. The slowest MacBook Pro performs on par with the fastest previous-generation MacBook Pro".
So if you have the cash and will use the extra power then go for the pro, otherwise if the difference in price means a lot, and it's not going to be used for anything too taxing, then you may as well get the cheaper macbook.
You should also take note not to listen to my advice. I learnt all this with five minutes googling. I'm shopping for a macbook pro too and this thread has motivated me to do some research. Cheers!
Just spend the extra and get the much faster pro. If you only eat soup for a few months you won't even notice the extra cash.
the macbook doesn;t make economical sense.
Get the macpro as you get mroe than the 130 quid extra
I got the macbook w/ student discount. I should've got the macbook pro. The keys light up when its dark.
especially win windows when for some reason it won't switch off
Wish I'd got a Pro. Still kicks arse though.
is always get the biggest and fastest you can at time of purchase, because in 3 years' time it will be puny and annoyingly slow — but just imagine how more annoying it would be if in 3 years' time you're still using a computer that isn't even as fast as that one.
I got the Pro for the same price as a standard one though so it's easier to say that I guess
It's a faster processor- 2 gigs more of ram, larger HD, SD slot, Better screen. more resilient case, and depending on what you use it for, the faster ports(firewire/thunderbolt) might save you DAYS transferring data.
Also I suspect the pro will retain it's value longer..
The standard Macbooks haven't have they, definitely go for the Pro
I'm just wondering whether its better value for money to upgrade the HD and ram myself, but I don't think it is.
Get the pro. It's a more solidly constructed piece- yes, you can upgrade the HD and the ram yourself on the macbook, and save about £60 but you'll still have a macbook built to last years specs (hence lowering the resale value) ...
I don't like the look of the new macbook case, and I'm not sure if they've corrected it but the old one chips at the sides. plus, backlit keys.
I think the main difference is that (a) the keys light up, and (b) you can feel superior to both PC and Macbook users, rather than just PC users.
