early N64/PS1 games (early 3D games)
i'm talking ocarina of time, banjo kazooie, goemon, that sort of thing.
what are your favourite things about these games? what are your favourite games like this?
for me the biggest enjoyment came from the amount of SPACE in these games. since 3D was very new, developers at the time just sort of created these worlds to explore, and this has sort of become lost as 3D software and games have progressed. like at the start of Super Mario 64 when you are just outside the castle, there is that huge area to explore, but there's no reward or anything like that for doing so, it's just there and you can look around and i guess it was meant for the player to get to grips with the controls system but i really love the amount of space and the detail put into this meaningless area. it felt like rather than creating these open areas with the mindset that the player will explore the area via this route and should be rewarded (like for instance a lot of the spyro games and if you ever played one you'll know what i mean, like, they had GEM TRAILS to these open areas and force fed them to you) instead of allowing the player to just mess around which was my favourite thing to do in games! i loved trying to climb up into places you weren't meant to be able to reach (mountain sides in morrowind for example) and just seeing the land for what it was.
anyway yeah lets talk about early 3D gams
