In (mostly pre 20th century) novels, our hero always seems to turn up in town and within seconds finds somewhere suitable to live with apparently no bother. Always struck me as a bit weird. As if the novel wasn't really about flathunting.
and a landlady calling me 'mr stevens' or whatever. 'that will be two shillings a week mr stevens'

Ask if they mind you moving in your '60 inch flatscreen' and what their views are on 'playboy bunnies hanging out' round the place. And stop turning up to your interviews semi-naked and stinking of booze.
