how do you carmelise onions? also, what should i have it with?

There are lots of different ways to do this to your onions. first slice/dice.
then heat butter and a splash of olive oil in the pan, add onions, keep them moving in the pan so they don't singe. Add a little touch of brown sugar as they cook, if you like (onions have their own sugars, which leech out as they cook, so don't over-sweeten. You can add a little balsamic (opr normal) vinegar at the end to give a kick. basicially, you are drawing out the sugars from inside the onion and turning them brown with te heat.
but with a med-low heat.
forgot to say- slowly does it. keep the heat low.

I think they're slightly bigger than onions.
You're right. They are flakey and crusty.
Fry onions over a VERY gentle heat for ages and ages (up to an hour), to force out the moisture and brown the sugars without burning them. You can add a pinch of salt to speed this process up.
Fry onions for a few minutes until soft, add some sugar and keep cooking until everything browns.
I reckon you should just make a sandwich instead.

you could make a sausage sandwich with some onion chutney....but only if you do the pokey the hole out of the bread thing AND if you're doing this for a lady, it could be like you're hinting at something and she won't even know it.
