I'm trying. It's FUCK OFF difficult.
I'd be obsessing over something trivial and irrelevant and it'd become an entirely stressful exercise accidentally.
Stressful, boring and frustrating.
Feel that hippy vibe.
Yeah, it's not easy, particularly when you're starting out. Just keep with it, it's absolutely worth it. The toughest thing for me was finding a sitting position that wasn't too uncomfortable to maintain for 15 - 30 minutes *TIP - if you want to do seated cross-legged meditation, sit on a pillow or two to begin with to take the strain off your hips and knees until they become more accustomed to it.
I'd recommend these books:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Meditation-Plain-English-Daishin-Buksbazen/dp/0861713168/ref=sr_1_cc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295565793&sr=1-1-catcorr - a simple, practical guide to getting started with meditation.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Happiness-Guide-Developing-Lifes-Important/dp/1843545586/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295566121&sr=8-1 - more of a guide as to how and why meditation is beneficial to your overall mental wellbeing, but well worth a read.
but the first review of his book that I linked to just there reminded me about it. Matthieu Ricard giving a Google Tech Talk a few years ago about the positive effects of meditation on the mind: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1424079446171087119#
now I can barely manage five minutes. That said, please take my recommendation extremely seriously as it is read/devised by an awesome Englishman who was bonkers
that helped me a lot
Lots of different types too. I'm quite into my mindfullness at the moment.
But if you just want standard 'chill the fuck out' type meditation I cannot reccomend strongly enought 'The Meditation Podcast', it's easy to find on itunes and it's really really good.
After imploding relationships, career crisis and everything else meditation was one of the things that really helped me get it all back together. So yeah, do it.
stop trying so hard

He paid £450 when he was unemployed to do 2 day course in it. I googled it out of interest and can do it for free.
They give you a 'secret' mantra and when he forogt it and asked again the instructor took him out to the carpark and whispered it out there so no one could overhear. It's individual to each person and you can't say what it is. I googled this too and found out what it was.
He had to take a hankerchief and a bunch of flowers with him.
Never ceases to amaze.
