Is this ever acceptable?
If one is black and the other, in comparison, turns out to be a very dark grey (like what jeans often are) then it's a "no".
A slight mismatch is the only way to make it work for me. Then again, I feel like a twat in either combination
It's a minefield.
and some girl asked me the way to the Scala - I should've started a conversation about how we were both going to the Scala but at this point I realised I was wearing black trousers and a black top and I looked weird so I just told her where it was and then fast-walked off (to the Scala).
and it took me till I was 26 to learn that
And that's not unusual. Today it's black Converse, black jeans, black shirt, black v-neck sweater, black overcoat, black hat. It suits me.

It's as black as he feels on the inside.
But both things need to look good - all black but scruffy will make you look 14.
