pretty good, yup?
but it's on at stupid times at my local cinema :( Hopefully I'll be able to catch it at some point.
Mike Leigh is always good at the bittersweet thing and he nails it somewhat here.
its really good...
I went into it ignoring happy-go-lucky cos i didnt like it so much which confused me massively cos I'd only just watch Secrets and lies which is pretty much up there as one of my fav films....
...I wrote a lot more but it sounded gash so I thought I'd go with this. Broadbent being amazing.
how are we suppossed to take tom and jerri as people? or any of the characters for that
for such a simple film, it has so many layers that could reveal themselves over time.
i think, the thing i noticed the most...listen to the way gerri speaks to mary. it's so cold and polite, like talking to a stranger. but when she talks to her patients, it's like she's conversing with an old friend. for someone who has made a career out of helping people, she never really tries to help a person she is suppossed to be close to. she just ruffles her hair and says, 'never mind mary'...when she clearly needs help...no matter how self-absorbed mary can be.
i dunno. you could read it as a critique of people that want to make a career out of helping people, so they can feel like they have 'made a difference' in their lives by helping another life. when really, we all have the oppertunity to help another person everyday, no matter what we do for a job.
but that is only one possibility.
