God, it's awful.
It's always on the BBC weather map.
weird name, for a weird place. No idea why it always seems to appear on the weather maps, thought it was fairly insignificant.
there's no sugar factory, just a huge paper factory. Although it has been said that King's Lynn (Or King's bin LOL) does proper stink of shit, so maybe it is the one your thinking of.
but Google tells me that it is indeed the sugar beet factory that stinks the place up. 22 years I've lived here.
King's Lynn is awful.
Depends how the wind blows, I suppose.
But I can't ever remember having the smell of the sugar beet factory reaching the town centre, you usually have to be a lot closer. The brewery can smell, but it's just the smell of hops. It's a nice smell in a strange way.
Bury St Edmunds talk lol
now let's celebrate the town of kings:
Now that's a weird name.
It's an absolute hole.
If so, I feel his pain.
I do like living there. We've got a good bunch of friends up here, we live five minutes' walk from The Walks (which is our daughter's favourite place as she loves running round the park, feeding the ducks, toddling on the bandstand etc). House prices are really affordable (we live in a fairly attractive 3 bed character property dating from 1820 and the market value is something like £130,000). It's pretty well-served for shops (for a town of its size); it's close to the norfolk coast, which is damn lovely on a good day (but bleak and freezing at other times). there are a handful of decent old-man-style pubs.
downsides: the nightlife is pretty shit (no real "alternative" scene, just a couple of grim nightclubs with names like Dr Thirsty). Emo/goth boredom hanging around most street corners. There aren't that many great restaurants (though the thai restaurant is pretty decent and some of the pubs in the surrounding villages are lovely). There's a humming undercurrent of anti-A8 national* racism.
so yeah, it's not the most amazing place ever but it's alright. in any case, you could be living in florence or venice or new york and still be having a shit time. it's what you make of it, and i'm pretty happy there.
*sorry, not sure the proper term - but lithuanians, latvians, people from the EU whose countries joined the EU in the past few years.
You still up for saturday?
I've not been to Dr Thirsty. I wouldn't subject DiSers to a Kings Lynn meat...
