It's an excuse for not getting gash, right?
It's an excuse for being poor
I knew a few straight edge friends-of-friends at university and I hope I never know any ever again. I've never met such a bunch of sanctimonious, po-faced, sneering killjoys.
Not to tar all straight edgers with the same brush, of course.
Purely because I just don't like it. Appearing to be a sanctimonious, po-faced, sneering killjoy is a good reason for me not to though.
You also have to give up all drugs (that means you, caffeine!), meat and animal products, songs with tunes, friends, empathy, and laughter.
Not having a proper cup of tea again would make me want to end it all
Half-sXe will just get you despised by both camps. Although it's probably arguable that that goes for all-the-way-sXe too.
Straight-edgers: is there anything they don't despise?
With a lower case x or something?
but not caffeine or meat or the other stuff.
Claiming to be straight-edge was pretty much the only vaguely successful pulling tactic I had as a teenager.
That must've been a long birth certificate.
but never really understood the whole straight edge thing.
It was more about not living FOR drugs/booze etc
for an exclusivist punk cult.
A lot of people used SxE as a positive thing in their life, just like anything else, these people tended to look at it as a personal choice. A lot of other SxE people saw it as an(other) excuse to be angry with people and justifying aggressive anti-social behaviour.
Being vegan wasn't initially a pre-requisite for being SxE. It was about being able to think clearly for yourself, not clouding your mind with booze, drugs and sex for the sake of sex. It got out of hand though and became another of those things taken over by over-zealous, sanctimonious, self-righteous pricks.
It became another set of structured rules, set up by people who /always/ state they have a stance against such rules. It became 'churchy', has a solid core of hypocrisy and became bullshit.
Personal opinion mind. All personal opinion.
As the rest of Minor Threat weren't so committed and weren't keen on it sounding preachy.
particularly well otherwise.
If it's the song 'Straight Edge' then I think it was always from the 'personal perspective'.
And you're right about the other band members not being as staunch in the SxE beliefs as Ian MacKaye.
It always struck me as odd that for a 'scene'/subculture so entrenched int he idea of the outsider, the loner and people who were thinking for themselves outside of the strictures of mainstream society, that a lot of 'punk' ideology was dogmatic in the extreme. Just another way to fit in. That was a particularly hard blow to my teen self.
are pricks who just can't get a drink with out being id'ed or can't get their end away. FUCK EM
They don't actually like being nice to people if they're in a group, which is kinda bent. In fairness, its a fairly selfish thing to do to just be concerned about maintaining your bodytempleidontcare yet be an absolutely obnoxious bellend that makes everybody else either feel awful about themselves, or think that all straight edge people are about as nice and useful as torn foreskin.
then you never were.
and whilst with veganism or anything like that, on some level it makes you think that you are right and others are wrong they've never really been dicks about it.
My brother isn't straight edge and isn't vegan his girlfriend and a lot of his mates are and they don't have any issues.
Obviously some people can be massive cunts though.
something like "BIG UP TO THE VEGAN STRAIGHT EDGE MASSIVE" on the back
A bit over-negative, no?
but I can't find it, so have this one instead: http://empireunderground.com/blog1/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/20030113straightedgehardcore.gif
it's a shame he became really, really shit
My best mate is straight-edge and he's a great bloke. Sure when he first started it he was really up himself about it, but once he (and everyone else) got used to it it just sort of became normal. When me and my mates have parties/go out drinking sometimes I don't drink, and I'm sure alot of you do too. I really fail to see the connection between not drinking/taking drugs and "ARRRG BEING A SANCTIMONIOUS FUCKING KNOW-ALL FUCKING LONER PRICK"
If tolerance is lacking the non-drinker (for example) may become irritated and annoyed that other people choose differently from them. If this happens then they fall into the category of prick.
If they start to labour the point with lectures on how bad drinking is, how much damage it is doing, how much better they feel about themselves by not drinking, etc, etc. They then fall into the category of sanctimonious prick.
If they were then to follow up those lectures with physical threats of violence or other acts of aggression towards people who were drinking. That person then falls into the category of utter cunt and is no different to the 'latter period Skrewdriver' fan.
You can easily replace drinking with smoking, taking drugs, shagging about, white/straight/male/Xtian.
The difference is in how easily you can accept that someone has the right to live differently and be differently to yourself and your little clique of likeminded 'friends'.
But the tolerence thing works both ways innit. Someone choosing to absatain from whatever (without getting preachy) and shouldn't have to put up with getting badgered or pilloried by someone (who is OTT in the 'Ahhh g'waaan' stakes) about that choice.
but if you mean does anyone not drink, smoke or do drugs then yes I dont do any of those things.
If someone pasted a joint around a party I may have a little but never buy any or do alot. Havent drank in 3 years, never smoked.
Well, I just went out and didn't drink.
It was FUCKING AWFUL. Everyone turned into absolute morons incapable of holding a conversation, or breathing without spitting everywhere.
there's nothing quite so horrific as being sober and suddenly realising how annoying drunk people are.
Obviously we never get like that, right?
when the night disolves into annoyance you go home. Most of the time I find being sober around drunk people fun. When its wrecked people its different obviously.
Like I say, it's 50/50 when I drink and when I don't, and when I don't I just go home at around 1 a.m. when everything tends to start getting out of hand.
Although not 100% or I would ever claim to be "straight edge".
Not drunk alcohol in about 6 years, but that's mainly to me not liking the taste of wine/beer. Might eventually warm to it.
Never agreed (of dabbled) with drugs/smoking so that's that's those boxes ticked.
My Mum has always purchased caffeine free Coke (and coffee) since I can remember and I've kinda carried that on. Never actually got into coffee so no caffeine there either. Don't even like tea. :-/
What's strange is that it must be 7/8 years since I had either a Dr Pepper or Cherry Coke and I can still remember what they taste like...
Can never see me going down the whole vegan and no promiscuous sex route though.
So basically I survive on meat and Tizer.
let everyone else know how right you are in the loudest way possible: huge X on the back of your neck for e.g.
but why do you have to give yourself a label and form a cringey sub culture?
* Secret Societies
* Sports Teams
I've never understood the dancing thing!
